Chance of a double upload this week seeing as this ep is a short one? 👀

Cobel's curiosity behavior watching Mark and Gemma interact makes so more sense now. And so does the employment of Miss Huang.

This is a strange little episode that I like a lot. Some people don't like this one, or feel like it takes us from the main action, but I like getting some backstory on Cobel. Plus James Le Gros and Jane Alexander are so great in it. Filmed in Newfoundland, the setting is so evocative.

Sam - Below is a good definition for Ether. I can still smell ether in my memory from all of my organic chemistry ether labs back in college. I did so many that I would get headaches from the slightest fumes. Those lab hoods didn't really help, either. "Diethyl or ethyl ether: a colorless, transparent, mobile, very volatile, highly flammable liquid with a characteristic odor; it was the first inhalational anesthetic used for surgical anesthesia, but is now rarely used in the United States or Canada because of its flammability." [...and there are much better anesthesia drugs these days; quicker acting, less nausea, etc.] Ether was first synthesized in 1540 by a Prussian botanist. He called it "oleum vitrioli dulce" or "sweet oil of vitriol". The name of the episode refers to ether. It could be a reference to the beginning of Lumen as well as Cobel's own history; having worked in the ether factory herself. Ether was first used in surgery in 1842 but only gained in popularity almost ten years later. I can see where an upstart chemical/pharmacy company would be able to fill a whole in the market by providing the country a pure high-quality medicinal ether. They would be able to get in on the ground floor of a new drug and a new surgical procedure that helped save lives.

Interesting character arc for Cobel. Bad guy is now looking like a good guy, but her path only changed because she was fired, not because of her conscience. Makes me wonder if one of the people we currently think of as a good guy, ends up being a bad guy in season 3. Hopefully we don't have to wait 3 years to find out. Also, I hope season 3 doesn't take a dive and totally go off track like Westworld did. When the plot and action of Westworld left it's original location (in Westworld) it seemed like the show lost it's way. I can't imagine where season 3 will take place in Severance because it doesn't seem plausible that Helly and Mark will run around in the hallways while Dylan sits and refines numbers in the Lumon basement.

Crawnch!

“Sweet Vitriol”, the name of the episode, is what ether was once referred to as. Also frolic, one of the four tempers, is a reference to ether. Back in the 1800s people use to have parties where everyone huffed ether and they were called “ether frolics”.

We're getting them up as quickly as they're edited! -Sam

The setting is insane!! I can totally understand why it could be a polarizing episode but absolutely loving this season! -Sam

Okay, thank you, Kevin! As soon as you said chem, I IMMEDIATELY knew the scent haha nasty!!!! -Sam

Yes, great point!! I also hope we don't have to wait forever for Season 3! Excited to finish up Season 2! -Sam

Ahh interesting!! Thank you for sharing! -Sam

She's on the same fellowship that plucked cobel out of the ether factory and on the management track.

Watching Daniel's shirt randomly change color in the middle of the episode felt like Mark watching the room change around him as he's integrating lol

Ether is also used in cold climates as an engine starting fluid. I would imagine Lumon produced that too, cause as they've said, "what doesn't Lumon make?"

They don't make ethical decisions? Take a gander at the "I bought a non-running piece of heavy equipment and now I have to fix it" channels on YouTube. They are constantly spraying ether down the air intakes as a way to "kick" the gas or diesel engines to life... if only for the few seconds until the ether burns up.

Love getting the backstory and the big reveal about Cobel, but...imo this still feels like they reaaaally had to stretch it out to justify it being its own episode. Could have worked better if they tightend it up and integrated it as the B plot of a broader episode.
