Please please watch "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary special", it is a GREAT way to wrap everything up. Came out recently! Its a legit walkthrough of each movie and reunions with the cast, it's really well made!

Jay S

So Snape's redemption is one of the central points in this one. Snape is such a complicated character, and he may be the one who's the most different compared to the book. This movie, in particular, romanticized his redemption much more than the book. For most of the movies, Snape is just portrayed as a strict teacher, but in the books, he's a straight-up bully who enjoys tormenting the students, especially Neville. There's a reason why Neville's biggest fear in the 3rd one was Snape. He also tries everything to get Harry in trouble or expelled. Snape loved Lily, but she only saw him as a friend. Lily came to his defense in the memory where James bullies him, and Snape replies by calling her a mudblood. That was after Lily defended Snape for years, despite him being an aspiring Death Eater. After that, she was done with him, fell in love with James, and never spoke to Snape again. About the prophecy: Snape was the one who overheard the prophecy about Harry and relayed it to Voldemort. At that time, he had no clue that it was about Lily's son. When he realized that she was marked for death, he switched allegiance and worked for Dumbledore. Although at first, he tried to convince Voldemort only to kill Harry and James, and spare Lily. So if you go by the books, Snape is not really a straight-up hero; he's much more gray, which just makes him such a complex and fascinating character. But I think at this point, HP fans have accepted that there are two Snapes, one from the books and one from the movies. He's probably the only character where that is the case. With everyone else, they're pretty much seen as the same character, although they may have slight differences. And Alan Rickman is just so fucking good, which makes it easier to accept. As for Dumbledore, we shouldn't be too harsh on him. Yes, he did have a grand plan, where Harry was supposed to die, but there was really no other way. That part of Voldemort inside him had to be destroyed, and he probably knew that Harry could come back. But Dumbledore absolutely cared for Harry. That's why he held off for years on telling Harry that he was the chosen one. You guys wanted more redemption for Draco. Well, they actually did film a scene where Draco throws Harry his wand after he reveals himself to be alive. That really should've made it in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p2Iu8LUX1Y Thank you for the journey. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you stay away from the TV series because I have a bad feeling about it!

Belatrix's wand was stolen by Harry Potter. If they had presented it at the bank, they would have known it was an imposter, because they had been warned. Also, people murder all the time. There aren't just horcruxes everywhere. There's more to it. I think you guys misremembered the Deathly Hallows story as well. The stone only shows you the dead, it doesn't bring people back to life. That's why it drove the brother to kill himself.

Warren H

The books really are better (just because there are SO many great characters in them who hardly appear in the movies, for example the Weasley twins) so someday (maybe when your kid is ready for them) I HIGHLY recommend you discover why the entire world went crazy when they came out, but I think the films were done as well as they could realistically be done, and am glad you enjoyed them!

Matthew Maxon

Alan Rickman was going to quit because he was bullying a child. The author told him what his arc was and why. That's why he stayed. i can't imagine this Snape as anyone but him. He was THE ONLY ONE who knew until the 7th book came out. BTW, my favorite Snape moment is when he pulls back his sleeves and pushes Harry's and Ron's heads down to get them to work. That's when Hermoine decides she's going to accept Krum's asking her to the ball.

Matthew Maxon

The mirror was given to Harry by Serious during Order. It was stolen by Mandungus(sp?). It's not The Mirror of Erised. (Desire).

Matthew Maxon

The Gemino Curse, isnt an Infinite Money Glitch, it disappears after you've been crushed to death by the weight. In the book, it's also very hot to the touch.

Matthew Maxon

The name Voldemort is jinked in that if you say it, he knows where you are. That's how they found them in the coffee shop.

Matthew Maxon

The alarm in Hoggsmeade is called "The Caterwauling Alarm".

Matthew Maxon

Not Defense of the Dark Arts... But Dark Arts!!! Practicing Cruciatus on First Year students. 11 year old kids!

Matthew Maxon

Most of the kids in the Room of Requirement were members of the DA & people who disagreement with the Carrow siblings!

Matthew Maxon

Only a select few are Death Eaters. The rest are following.

Nixonsghost

Lord of the Rings would be a good next series to react to if y'all have never seen that

Matthew Maxon

Voldemort killing Harry kills that part of himself in Harry. Others could have killed Harry's body but not the Horcrux.

Matthew Maxon

When Harry used the Stone, he cast "The Love Crux" on everyone in the school. It's was a sacrifice because Harry didn't defend himself.

Matthew Maxon

Harry was wearing THE CLOAK & had the Stone in his hand. V had the wand. It was Harry's then. He was THE MASTER OF DEATH!!

Jen Barnes

Thank you so much for getting the final movies out so quickly! I loved these reactions and I'm glad you enjoyed the movies. If you want more details, you should absolutely read the books, maybe the first few with your daughter once she gets a little older. Harry and Ginny's kids are James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna. The final book was much more brutal than the film. We lose a lot of students and teachers in great detail, it was pretty tragic.

Danilo C

Great reaction, as always. And again, the confusion you felt a few times is not your fault. The movies do a bad job explaining a lot of things. The number of Horcruxes is confusing for a couple of reasons. 1) They mess up the dialog in the movies. When Harry says to Aberforth that there was only one horcrux left, that was either a mistake by the writers/director/actor or Harry said that to motivate Aberforth. 2) Voldemort's plan was to split his soul into 7 pieces, but people forget that his physical body needs to have a piece of his soul too, so he planned on making 6 Horcruxes. Harry became a 7th horcrux that Voldemort never intended to make. It's very likely that Voldemort never even knew that Harry became a horcrux. Harry didn't come back from the dead because of the Resurrection Stone. Remember, the stone didn't actually revive people. In that fairy tale about the Deathly Hallows, the brother that got the stone killed himself to be truly reunited with the woman he loved. This was also illustrated by that scene when Harry uses the Stone to talk to his parents, Sirius and Remus. Harry actually never really died from that Avada Kedavra in the forest. I'm not sure if I should tell you what really happens, because maybe it will be a nice surprise in the TV Show if you ever watch it. I'll just say that Dumbledore had indeed a plan for Harry to survive, but he wasn't 100% sure it would work. It was a pretty big gamble that luckily paid off. Good job on picking up on the theme about how it's not really just about destiny or fate or whatever. The books make it a lot more clear that things are not as pre-determined as prophecies seems to indicate. There is a great chapter in the 6th book where Dumbledore and Harry have a conversation about it and it's one of my favorite little scenes in all of the books. But it's really cool that you noticed it just from watching the movies. Voldemort thought you had to kill the last owner of the Elder Wand to become its master because that became part of its legend. Most of the time, when someone took the Elder Wand from someone else, they would kill the previous owner because they knew that person wouldn't just accept that. They surely would try to get the most power wand in the world back, so killing them was "safer". And so the legend that spread was that you had to kill them. Wandlaw (the field of magic that studies wands) is kind of obscure and most people don't know that much about it. Think of it as like physics or chemistry. Most people who go to Hogwarts know a little bit of the basics, but most of it is not common knowledge among wizards. When Olivander told Harry that Draco's wand's allegiance changed, Harry realized that you don't need to kill the owner to "master" a wand. Because he didn't kill Draco, he just wrestled Draco's wand out his hand, literally by brute force, not even by magic and still won its allegiance. Harry didn't know if the Elder Wand's allegiance also changed to him when he bested Draco, but he gambled that it did and it paid off as well.

Mate, have you considered condensing all your thoughts into one or two posts, instead of just spamming the whole thread? I don't think Dan and Sam want to reply to 10 posts from the same person either. Just some friendly advice.

Matthew Maxon

When Barty Crouch Jr killed dad. He made a Horcrux out of the eye. When he got back, he said it acted strange. Harry buried it in the woods. So BCJ has a split soul?....

Matthew Maxon

Yeah I could have. Or one thread.

Holy shit stfu , I rarely post but why are you spamming like a bot

Matthew Maxon

Lots of thoughts. Not spamming on purpose. 🖕

Alexander Ocean

Just put it all in one message bro instead of 15 separate ones

I loved experiencing these Films again with you and finally seeing Snape's Memories (My Favorite Part of the Whole Franchise) ... Alan Rickman Was such a Great Actor !! I recommend "Robin Hood" (1991) with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman ... Alan Rickman is Amazing in this !!! The Idea with the Franchises is great !! You already watched my Favorite Ones ( Lethal Weapon, Rocky and Dirty Harry) ... How about the "James Bond Franchise" or "Mission Impossible" ... Also the Agatha Christie Films with Hercules Poriot are Amazing (The Original Series with Death on the Nile...)

Florian Meier

Blade 2, French Connection 2, The Jewel of the Nile, Beverly Hills Cop 3 and 4 and Crocodile Dundee 2 would be also cool to Finish this Franchises

My ranking of the Harry Potter films from best to worst is: Deathly Hallows Part 2, Order of the Phoenix, Prisoner of Azkaban, Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows Part 1, Philosopher’s Stone, Goblet of Fire and Chamber of Secrets. I like all of the Harry Potter movies and it is one of the few movie franchises that has more than three movies where I think the weakest movie in the series is still good.

Flerb

As usual, a reading of the books fills in all the gaps. In this book, you actually read along with Harry the many articles, obituaries, and excerpts about Dumbledore from the newspaper and Rita's book which all you get is the headlines in the movies. So when we meet Dumbledore's brother (and his sister in the painting) it's super confusing without the context. It took me 20 years to get to the books, maybe y'all will someday too.

CJR

Don’t know if you noticed but Vincent Crabbe who was one of Draco’s cronies was not in the Deathly Hallows movies. The reason is because the actor who played the role was arrested for growing cannabis plants. In the book it’s Crabbe who tries to kill Hermione with the killing curse and then casts the fire spell and dies; due to the actor playing Crabbe being fired that role was given to Gregory Goyle instead.

Matthew Maxon

Didn't realize it until later. Wasn't thinking

OddThomas

The first prequel movie Fantastic Beasts is definitely on par with the HP movies - the prequel sequels get progressively iffy though

Gavin King

In the books Belatrix's vault is way scarier. The trinkents dont only multiply when touched, but they are also hundreds of degrees hot.

MarisoL

Voldemort probably killed Snape the way he did because he thought the wand wouldn't hurt his master. ( Still brutal tho) How embarrassing for him to use death curse twice on Harry and fail, no wonder his followers fled. Mother's love saved Harry twice. This was wonderful watching with you guys.

Before I saw the movie in theatres, I really hoped that the film would use the theme of Harry leaving in the train from the end of Philosopher's stone for Harry seeing off his kids on Platform 9 3/4 and was delighted when it did. I think it might be the only piece of John Williams music (outside of the main theme) to be used once he left after Azkaban. My favourite Desplat pieces for DH 2 are the battle of Hogwarts theme and the Snape theme he wrote for the beginning of the film that is reworked into the memories sequence. It's explained better in the books (of course) but the Master of Death title that the Hallows give is purely symbolic. Harry became Master of Death by accepting death, unlike Voldemort who spent his whole life in a quest for immortality. Voldemort is french for both "flight of death" (vol-de-mort) but "vol" also means "theft", so "theft of death". How Harry actually came back from the great beyond is made more clear but I'm not gonna tell you if you ever want to read the book you'll have some surprises. The Hallows are merely powerful magical objects. In the movies, the only Invisibility Cloak we are made aware of is Harry's, but while rare, they are not legendary objects. Moody himself owned a couple of them. What makes Harry's special as a Hallow is that other cloaks eventually lose their magic and become opaque, but Harry's has been functionnal for hundreds of years. The novels are told in a 3rd person limited perspective. Only a handful of chapters across the books don't follow Harry's general POV. Like the movie for example, Moody's death happens off-page and is recounted by Bill later. Unlike the movie, Harry is present when Fred dies so it's described to the reader in detail. It destroyed me. You've been made aware that the movies were made before the books were finished. The 5th movie came out a couple of weeks before the 7th book (summer 2007). Half-Blood Prince started shooting in September 2007. This means that the Deathly Hallows movies were the only ones in the series to be fully produced after the books were completed. That's why I'm optimistic for the new HBO adaptation. The films and books enduring popularity means that the show will have a good budget and now the writers have complete foresight on the story. On the subject of the Fantastic Beasts films. I really enjoyed the first one and I think it works rather well as a standalone story set in the world of Harry Potter. It's not really until the sequels that it becomes this unweldy prequel saga to the movies and lose the plot in my opinion. Finally, as far as new film series go, how about some Hercule Poirot mysteries? There's the recent Kenneth Branagh ones (Murder on the Orient-Express, Death on the Nile, and A Haunting in Venice) which I do like (though Nile is easily the weak spot), but I would like to point out the 70's/80's ones starring Albert Finney then Peter Ustinov as the Belgian detective (Murder and Nile again, followed by Evil Under the Sun, and Appointment with Death) although I would maybe skip the 4th one. Or maybe it's time to go back to the Planet of the Apes?

Thank you both for choosing HP. I just binged your final 3 reactions back to back! 😁 For a number of years now, I’ve really loved your reactions, and I’d always hoped you hadn’t seen it - and if you hadn’t, I was praying that one day you’d do it. It was everything and more watching along with you. 👍 FWIW, personal highlights were Dan’s constant “fk ’em up!” / “wreck ’em!” and Sam’s “f**king rat!” every time Pettigrew showed up. 😂 You did great with it BTW - pretty much everyone who hasn’t read the books is confused by elements of the plot. A number of times they just gave a nod to a plot point that was explained in detail in the books - Sirius’s mirror, for instance. I’m sure someone will tell you more about that so I’ll leave it to them lol. I will just mention one thing: IMO the reason Hermione refused to give the goblins Bellatrix’s wand was because, after figuring out they’d been rumbled, she knew they were asking her to hand it over in an attempt to confiscate it. I’m not aware that anyone has ever suggested that, but it’s what I personally think was going on there. I agree that there were so many good villains. I think you may have forgotten about them (understandable, with so much having just happened - plus the fact that they’re kind of under the radar, being Muggle-world-only) - but I would legit choose the Dursleys as the biggest villains. There’s actually a fan theory that Harry never left his cupboard under the stairs and, as a coping mechanism, the magical world - and therefore the entire story that unfolded - was all in his imagination. I thought it was interesting that they showed him picking up his toy soldier in the final movie. I always wondered if that was a bit of a nod to that theory - like an acknowledgment of its existence within the fandom. I don’t believe the theory is true for a second, but it just shows how villainous the Dursleys were, for that to have even arisen as a theory lol. Thanks again. 🙂 Now to catch up with your Severance reactions! I’m so interested to see what you think of the S2 finale.

Prato 24

Did you notice that Snape didn’t fight McGonagal only defended and he used her offensive spell to take out the Carrows behind himself? You only her Neville mention them in the tunnel heading to Hogwarts with Potter and company🤘🏻👍🏻

Prato 24

Voldemort killed the dwarf.

Len Walker

PLEASE WATCH THE 20th YEAR ANNIVERSARY ON HBO MAX!

David W.

Goblin, but yes.

David W.

Yup. Been a big regretful problem since POA. -- "Fidelius Charm? Naw, let's make Sirius Blackk oNe oF tHe fEW people who know where the Potters were hiding in, instead!"

Hans Engelen

Yes, the part of the soul in the body of Voldemort is the one they always miss...

Hans Engelen

Please ... Pretty please with sprinkles on top ... also do fantastic beasts. I know some people might disagree but I am not ready for the journey to end and now that all the drama has died down they just feel like the thing to watch next.

enchantertim

I genuinely love the first Fantastic Beasts movie. I honestly think that it was an amazing entry to the franchise on its own with a contained story. I loved the new characters, LOVED the main character (who was not your typical hero, which was brilliant), the new setting/time period etc. If you love this universe and wanted something a little different or an expansion of this universe, I thought it was perfect. The sequels though, they can skip lol (even though there were still some stuff I liked in the 2nd one, but man is it flawed and 3rd one was just simply abysmal)

Hans Engelen

I agree but ... I always felt they glossed over major plot points in the Deathly Hallows so much (the Dumbledore angle) that I would advise watching them all even with all that. And just because we both have our reservations on them doesn't mean we should deny the reactors a chance to form their own opinion.

enchantertim

Sure, I wouldn't mind them reacting to it. But oh man, wish the sequels were as good. This series had so much potential...

dieselbeast

Just to add one more person lol I would enjoy y'all reacting to the 20th anniversary reunion on HBO max, well worth it!

My new name (he/him)

I like how the Elder Wand mystery was something that accidentally happened. No one predicted that it would change allegiance to Harry. Well I guess Dumbledore orchestrated the loss of his wand by not defending himself against Draco. He probably wanted, the wand's allegiance to go to someone that Voldemort wouldn't suspect. Really clever work by Dumbledore!

Matthew Maxon

I was watching a video on YT about patronus and wand cores. My patronus is a Manx Cat. My wand is Hawthorne and Phoenix Feather. The video said that combo was more common is a Slytherin. hahaha! Oh in Chamber, Ron says" Why cant we follow the butterfly's" In Hogwarts Legacy video game, there is a quest where you do in the Forbidden Forrest. Now you can play the game with no spoilers as you know about The Hallows.
