RIP to the great Rob Reiner! Adore this film, probably my favorite RomCom, such a treat revisting this with you guys! Hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you both a Happy New Year!

Red

I believe you would enjoy doing a reaction to 2004 The Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart and Ethan Suplee [his heavier years]

TBR Schmitt

Thank you, Brent! You as well and I hope you enjoy the reaction! -Sam

Nora Ephron's script is an all timer. They actually released it as a book and even reading the dialogue it's so great. Billy Crystal did add some hilarious improv and ideas too like having a sad deep conversation in the middle of a football wave. I actually know someone who made an audio file and she listens to the movie a little bit every night before she goes to bed. Nora Ephron also came up with the Rom-Com dividing line. She says there's the Jewish tradition (she was Jewish) and the Christian tradition of romantic movies. In the Christian tradition, other outer obstacles are keeping the two people apart. Rose wants to be with Jack, but her mother and high society try to keep them apart. In the Jewish tradition, it's the characters themselves who are their own obstacles. They have to overcome their own fears to be with the person they love. It's an interesting way of looking at these movies. This is one that gets better and better each viewing because a funny line will stand out more each time. Baby fish mouth! Don't fuck with Mr. Zero! Last thing. The movie is 96 minutes. Fast and perfect. No bullshit filler plot about something happening at work. Or Joe calls Sally toward the end of the movie to get back together and Harry has to stop it. All I care about is Harry and Sally. They have to be high up there in terms of all time screen chemistry.

Around the time the movie was being conceived, Rob Reiner was getting divorced, and he would call Billy Crystal all the time on the phone. When Ephron became involved, she would take stuff they talked about and put it into the script. Later, they turned that around on her when they watched her order in a restaurant the way that Sally orders and insisted she put it in the film. Years later, she told a story about being on an airplane, and ordering a drink, and the flight attendant asked if she had ever seen When Harry Met Sally. The fake orgasm scene was a collaboration. Ephron came up with the idea for the scene, but it was just a conversation. Ryan suggested that Sally should fake an orgasm right there in the restaurant. Crystal added the punchline of the woman saying "I'll have what she's having." Reiner cast his own mother as the woman placing the order, and so she was there watching when Reiner acted out how he wanted Ryan to play the scene. I had always known that the movie as written was going to end with Harry and Sally going back to being friends, which Ephron thought was more realistic, and then it was changed. In the wake of Reiner and his wife's passing, it has been widely noted that Reiner's decision to change it had to do with meeting and falling in love with Michele during the making of the film. Many will likely recommend the other Nora Ephron classics Sleepless in Seattle (1993) -- which reunites Ephron and Reiner, but with Ephron as director and Reiner as an actor -- and You've Got Mail (1998), and I agree with those recommendations, but I also want to stress that Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks have a wonderful, earlier third rom-com collaboration, Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), which is amazing, and features one of Meg Ryan's greatest performances (for reasons I won't spoil). Also, Joe Versus the Volcano was directed by John Patrick Shanley. When Harry Met Sally is one of my three favorite 1980s New York rom-coms, the others being Moonstruck (1987), which was written by Shanley, and Crossing Delancey (1988). Honorable mention goes to Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), which is equally great but perhaps more of a straight comedy than a rom-com, even though it's got some rom in it. Billy Crystal's resume is maybe a little spottier than Ryan's, but the most obvious recommendation to you as Sopranos fans would be Analyze This (1999), which features Crystal as a therapist and Robert De Niro as his gangster patient, and which is directed by Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day). Last but not least, Reiner also has a couple more movies that you would probably enjoy, including The Sure Thing (1985), and The American President (1995). Beautiful movie, great reaction. Here's to 2026!

Great Film !!! R.i.P. Rob Reiner !!! I recommend "Throw Momma from the Train" from 1987 with Billy Crystal and Danny De Vito... Classic Comedy !!! For Meg Ryan "Sleepless in Seattle" with Tom Hanks !!!

That was by far an unexpected treat. I would never have guessed neither of you had seen this film before. There was one scene in particular that I was curious how you both would react. That was when Sally mentioned that having children always changed the dynamics of marriage. At first she described it almost negatively then with anticipation. Like she came to realize that’s what she wants. The fact that one of the last scenes took place on New Years Eve and this was your last reaction to be released this year made it even more special.

I'm not a huge fan of romcoms, but this and As Good as it Gets, I absolutely love because they're both so well written. Another Billy Crystal film I'd recommend is City Slickers, which is a lot of fun. You've seen Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride (under heavy makeup) and the head mime in This is Spinal Tap :) Hope you both had a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for everyone in the new year.

Great reaction to a great film from a great director. Rob Reiner's filmography holds up against every other director I can think of. *This is Spinal Tap (contender for best mockumentary of all time) *Stand by Me (contender for best coming-of-age film of all time) *The Princess Bride (contender for best kids' fantasy film of all time) *When Harry Met Sally (contender for best romcom of all time) *Misery (contender for best Stephen King adaptation of all time) *A Few Good Men (contender for best courtroom film of all time) That list of films is crazy. Every one of them is a masterpiece, and no two are anything alike. The American President is another Rob Reiner romcom that I think you'd love. Written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Michael Douglas, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Michael J Fox, and Richard Dreyfuss.

I agree with Sam. Sally had feelings for Harry for a long time before. I think the first scene I've realized this is when she said that she was going on a date and did not know how to tell Harry. She had this reaction of being disappointed when she saw he was happy for her. Harry, being a cynic and a negative person, did a big jump by letting go and marrying Helen, therefore it's normal for him to forget her and just let himself fall in love again. Great movie, I love every bit of it. Like I keep saying: When she turns on the charm, Meg Ryan cannot not be adorable.

Good timing for a Rob Reiner tribute with this one as well :(

Chris Bruneau

Thanks for doing it, D&S! this movie is so sweet and wonderful, and such a fitting tribute to the late, great Rob Reiner! BTW, that fake orgasm scene is probably one of the most famous in ALL of film history!!!!!!!

Dave Carmichael

One of my favorite ROM-COM's of all time. Maybe beaten out by Sleepless in Seattle or Notting Hill, but one of the greats for sure. Thanks for delivering it on Xmas day..

The American President is a great one !!!

Ricardo Alanis

This is one of my favorite movies. My wife introduced me to it early on when we were dating over 22 years ago and it gets better each time. I HIGHLY recommend “Sleepless in Seattle” with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Very different story but wonderful performances and another iconic romantic comedy.

Ricardo Alanis

Second “As Good As It Gets” although my wife argues it’s not a rom-com but more of a dramedy. Still a fantastic movie.

Jason Dolan

For me Rob Reiner has 8 perfect films: This is Spinal Tap The Sure Thing Stand By Me The Princess Bride When Harry Met Sally.... Misery A Few Good Men The American President

Vincent Hollow

Throw Momma From the Train would be perfect since they already saw Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train.

TBR Schmitt

I have seen The Butterfly Effect! It has been years and years, maybe since it first came out. I'll check with Daniel if he's seen it! -Sam

Billy Crystal had a small role in This Is Spinal Tap. He was one of the mimes at the party (the other mime was Dana Carvey). Bruno Kirby was also in that movie as the driver who was a big fan of Sinatra.

Ray Johnson

This is my number 1 romantic comedy of all time and a top 10 movie overall. I just love their relationship so much and the ending makes me cry every time. Glad you guys liked it.

Just so you know I was growing up in the 60s and 70s and believe it or not they did have day of the week underpants with the name written on each pair, and from what I remember they didn’t have Sunday. I don’t really remember that or if it was because of God but there were such thing as days of the week underpants and all my girlfriends had them. It was an elementary school thing and girl thought they were cool to have them. That’s why I got a kick out of that story
