Serpico and The Verdict are the best here but let me tell you that you should not sleep on DEATHTRAP

Paul Cox

I can't believe you've presented us with a poll that would make me mildly disappointed if Serpico won*. (*Only because that would mean The Verdict lost.)

Roy Wright

I love Deathtrap and Orient Express but I agree Serpico and then The Verdict

David Martin

Definitely Fail Safe. A serious view of a cold war crises, the complete opposite of Dr. Strangelove, which was due to be released after Fail Safe. Stanley Kubrick did some arm twisting of studio executives to get his film released before Fail Safe, to the latter's detriment. Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau give excellent performances in a film nobody went to see.

Kevin Charley

The Hill (1965) is one of his best movies that no one ever really talks about. Did you guys already do Dog Day Afternoon?

TBR Schmitt

Yes! Dog Day Afternoon is on the channel! -Sam

Miles E Coburn

Cool! A great director! I voted for "Fail-Safe" (1964)(my favorite), "The Morning After" (1986), and "The Verdict" (1982). Hopefully "Fail-Safe" can pull it out.

TBR Schmitt

This poll has only been up for 21 minutes, but I was thinking, I wonder if the patrons would ever purposely leave a poll as a tie LOL and here we are... -Sam

Paul Cox

She's on to us, everybody!

Jennifer

The Morning After is a hidden gem many people don't talk about. Jane Fonda, Jeff Bridges & Raul Julia. A thriller with great tension, small tender moments, atmospheric & great acting.

Toc

Hey Jennifer, thanks, I've never seen that! I'll put it on my own list! I really don't know much of Sidney's later work! I think '82 (Deathtrap and The Verdict) are the most recent ones I saw, other than the Tarantino-esque one he did in the 90s.

Toc

I've seen that happen on another channel! It actually became a problem, lol. But.....it looks like Serpico is handily winning. At first, I was scrolling down, disappointed Deathtrap wasn't doing better.......then I came to Serpico and I was like, oh.....no contest! After Serpico, the others will sort themselves out, lol. LOVE that you are doing this so soon after Network, and that you've already done Dog Day Afternoon (and 12 Angry Men!).

Toc

Great reaction to Dog Day Afternoon! Definitely check it out! Yeah, The Hill never got its due.

Toc

Strangelove was supposed to be released in November of 1963 but it got delayed because of the Kennedy assassination. The preview screening was literally scheduled for November 22nd and got canceled. The movie was then delayed to January of 1964. Fail Safe came out in October of 1964, and was not ready for release in November of 1963, nor January of 1964. Kubrick did file suit once he caught wind of the Fail Safe production, claiming it was too similar to "Red Alert", the book Strangelove was based on, and did indeed have the production/release delayed. But "Strangelove" was already out, or coming out. And with all due respect to Lumet, Dr. Strangelove is the WAY superior movie, it's not even close. Fail Safe is dated and leaden in comparison. It looks great though. Great visuals. But, its lesser reputation has absolutely nothing to do with Strangelove coming out earlier; everyone saw Fail Safe. If they didn't see it in the theaters, they saw it on TV - just like most of us saw probably 95% of the movies viewed in our lifetimes, lol. Fail Safe was never an obscure movie, it was on TV constantly. Its lesser reputation was earned from people watching it, not from people not watching it. (The much superior alternative to Fail Safe/"serious" companion to Strangelove, and from the same exact time period would be The Bedford Incident, directed by James Harris, who had just split from producing Kubrick movies. A nuclear submarine story.

Toc

Absolutely love Deathtrap and can't wait for them to see it. That's reaction video gold, that movie! The Verdict, I used to like more than I do now. Still great though. But for a reaction video, I'd choose Deathtrap all the way. Serpico.....obviously should be the winner! But yeah, Deathtrap! A movie custom made for a reaction video! (Also, "Sleuth" from 1972!)

Jennifer

I hope you enjoy it! Now that I've been reminded of it, I'm going to do a rewatch myself. Based on the poll I don't think the channel will be watching it anytime soon, lol.

YoureMrLebowski

I enjoy polls. I enjoy seeing what the options are, how everyone votes, what's popular, etc. I welcome the shorter duration polls. Shoutout to Deathtrap (1982).

David Martin

I only compared Fail Safe to Dr. Strangelove as two opposites, although I disagree with your denigration of it. Two different genres. I love them both. I've read many reasons why Fail Safe was delayed, but never quite the one you propose. Fail Safe went into production ahead of Strangelove. Kubrick's suit was settled out of court, but Columbia, who produced Strangelove, bought the rights to Fail Safe. Kubrick then "convinced" (twisted the arm of) Columbia execs to release his film before Fail Safe. I also disagree with "everyone saw Fail Safe". Its box office performance was poor, from all accounts, although I can't find any actual numbers. Citing TV viewership, which occurred years later, is an "after-the-fact" comparison, and has nothing to do with the original release performance. In any case, I love them both, and feel Fail Safe is the lesser known of the two in large part due to it being released after Strangelove, regardless of how that happened to occur. And anyway, "12 Angry Men" is the best Lumet film. Too bad it wasn't eligible.

ChopSockey

The Verdict for so many reasons but also Samantha will love it the most

Smooticus

Geez, what a tough poll. Had to go w/ Serpico, Verdict, and Orient Express - probably the best adaptation of an Agatha Christy book

Florian Meier

Cool Poll ... Agree with the Rest ... "Serpico" and "The Verdict" are both perfect winner ... I personally would love to see "Murder on the Orient Express" ... This would be a fantastic reaction

To Wa

Missing from this list : The Anderson Tapes

David Wilkins

Pulling hard for The Verdict, which has been my monthly drawing entry several times. Serpico is great, but it’s not as deeply powerful as The Verdict.

f hf

Lmao I held off watching Serpico for years because I was hoping you would react to it but last month I finally sat down to watch it for the first time. One of Pacino's best roles.

Chris Bruneau

Sam: I told you about the Verdict when I first joined this channel--its the movie that made me 1st want to become a lawyer. I sincerely hope it wins.

Paul Cox

The Dog Day reaction was EARNED. It came in 2nd or 3rd in so many polls before it finally won.

Samolina Pilchard

Lumet had such a long and varied career-so many other films that could have been on this poll (I realize you have to draw a line). Some I would recommend - The Anderson Tapes (one of Christopher Walken’s earliest roles, and with Sean Connery), Family Business (Also with Connery, and Dustin Hoffman), and Night Falls on Manhattan. He even directed a film called Daniel! Haven’t seen that one myself, apparently it’s about the Rosenberg case.

Samolina Pilchard

Didn’t even notice that the poll was only 11 days. I’m assuming more frequent polls but only one at a time instead of two at a time.

John Fitzpatrick

One of the most underrated directors. Shame he never won an Oscar.

Jay Davis

Nice to see Fail Safe pulling so well, the seldom spoken bookend opposite Dr. Strangelove and a nice little film, in its own right. Can't go wrong with Serpico though, ya know?

David Wilkins

I’m going to be bold, and beg for the top TWO selections to be declared winners. It’s a shame that Before the Devil Knows is running so far behind, but that can wait for a monthly drawing.

Joe S.

Serpico! Sidney Lumet and Al Pacino made a good team, both films they did together were incredible!

Birdie Num Num

The Pawnbroker is worth a look. Was the first film about Holocaust survivors.

Birdie Num Num

imo the 2 best performances of Sean Connery's career were Lumet films - The Hill and The Offence
