Matt

"You're an inanimate fkn object" 🤣 one of my favorite lines in cinema history

Matt

Martin McDonagh is an amazing filmmaker highly recommend Three Billboards and Banshees Of Inisherin. Seven Psychopaths is also pretty good 👍

"We need something lighthearted after this one. We can't go straight into a rough movie." *looks at schedule, sees The Descent, Basic Instinct, and Deliverance* Good luck with that! May wanna bump up Bowfinger.

There's a short film by Martin McDonagh called 'Six Shooter' that's free to watch on YouTube. Its around a half hour long and is a great watch. Stars Brendan Gleeson and it won an Oscar for best short film.

Gary

A great day this has turned out to be. I'm suicidal, me mate tries to kill me, me gun gets nicked and we're still in fookin' Bruges!

Robert Smith

Good lord, while it is well acted, it's one of the most depressing films I've ever seen..

fromage

Alcoves. Do you use this word? Alcoves?

Marcus Cato

I hadn't seen this since it came out and man was this one so much darker than I remembered.

Jen Barnes

Love this movie, I remember it being super funny and it was, but I was surprised at how dark it was. I recommend "The Guard", a lovely little comedy with Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle.

Jen Barnes

Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards are great, I haven't seen Banshees yet.

As a Canadian, I laughed way too much at "You heet the Canadian?" 🤣 Coincidentally, Clémence Poésy (Chloe) also played Fleur in the Harry Potter films. Her character marries one of Ron's older brothers who was played by Domnhall Gleeson, the son of Brendan Gleeson (Ken).

I love the way certain lines are used twice, but hold different meanings the second time around. My favorite one being when Ken is making up the story about Ray loving Bruges to Harry over the phone and gives him the fake quote "I know I'm awake, but it feels like a dream." But after Harry tells Ken to kill Ray, he asks him to say the line again. But this time, Ken isnt just reciting something he just made up. In that moment, he was feeling like he was in dream, hoping for something to wake him up and bring him back to the real world where he'd still be waiting for Harry's call. That is just amazing writing. Damn, what a movie.

I actually saw Banshees before this and loved it. You guys should definitely check it out. Colin and Brendan were a perfect pair as always.

Eric

Legit one of my favorite movies of all time. Just exceptional in every way.

I've been talking about this as well -- it's actually by John Michael McDonagh, the brother of In Bruges' writer/director Martin McDonagh.

The famous screenwriter David Mamet (The Untouchables, Ronin) once said that the payoffs in a great screenplay should be "both surprising and inevitable." I think In Bruges is a perfect example of that philosophy in motion. I've said some stuff in the chat about the other Martin McDonagh films to help emotionally prepare you for what are great but also potentially quite emotionally turbulent movies. One thing I forgot to mention in the post is that his newest film, Wild Horse Nine, is coming out on November 6th, 2026, starring John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Tom Waits, and Parker Posey. I think Colin Farrell is magnificent in this movie. it may be his best performance, although I also just re-watched the great little thriller Phone Booth (2002) on another reaction channel and I was shocked at how good of a performance he gave in that as well, arguably on par with this one. I don't know if you saw The Batman (2022) off the channel, but if you check it out with the sequel on the horizon, you'll see another great Colin Farrell performance that's completely unlike this one. The scene doesn't work and the movie is better off without it (and the cheap unfinished digital effect in it also makes it unintentionally funny), but in the deleted scenes, you can see the scene of Harry getting revenge on Ken's behalf for the death of his wife, a flashback to when the characters were much younger. Although the movie is very emotionally intense, to the point where you might be afraid to revisit the film, I think you will find some of the jokes much funnier on a second viewing when you're not wondering what's going to happen next.

Martin's brother John Michael McDonagh is also an amazing director, directed The Guard and Cavalry, outstanding films.

In Bruges contains numerous references to Nicolas Roeg's classic thriller, Don't Look Now with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Most of those references can't be discussed for spoiler reasons but Chloe mentions that the film that's being shot is an homage to Don't Look Now and both movies have a similar setting of an old, foggy European city filled with canals (Venice in the case of DLN).

Nick Ireland

Excellent movie, and reaction. I would definitely recommend Banshees of Inisherin I think you'd appreciate it.

OddThomas

Three Billboards!

Charles Davies

You have to watch Three Billboards next!

Eric

They’re perfectly okay not doing that.

David Wilkins

I haven’t watched this one since about 2010, and hope to get around to it soon. I love Dan’s story about how it was discovered. There are many examples of that kind of unexpected delight, and often years after they were released.

A Tragicomedy always makes me laugh always makes me cry Incredible work of art Hope you watch Three Billboards someday if you haven't already also 3 Harry Potter actors Mad Eye, Voldemort and Fleur Delacour
