The Descent (2005) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Great Film !! Saw it in the Theaters Back then ... i recommend "Sanctum" from James Cameron and Frozen (2010)... the Vibe is similar

The impact of the proper ending doesn’t really work when you watch it on its own but it makes you wonder why on earth it was even changed in the first place.

That was the funniest (and the most fun) reaction I've seen in the long time! It's a shame director Neil Marshall gave up making quality movies and have now been reduced to making schlocky B-movies with his partner (and unfortunately such a poor actress) Charlotte Kirk. The Descent and Dog Soldiers (2002) are his best works (maybe a reaction to that film can be in the cards?). Both Doomsday (2008) and Centurion (2010) are decent films. But after that, his film career took a massive dive. At least, he's doing well on TV, being director for hire in shows such as Game of Thrones (which he got an Emmy nomination in Directing), Constantine, Westworld and others.

This was set in the Appalachian Mountains but most of the outside scenes (the forest, the cabin, some of the roads etc) were filmed in a place called Ashridge in the Chiltern Hills which is in Hertfordshire, South East England (about 40 miles north of London). I think they also filmed some scenes in Scotland. Perhaps the entrance to the cave? The funny thing is, I grew up less than 2 miles from there (and was still living there at that time) and I had no idea whatsoever that they were filming a movie. When I saw this for the first time, I was like "wow, this scenery looks so familiar to me; the Appalachian Mountains aren't so different to around here!" 😂 The interior shots of the cave were filmed in a studio. It's hard to believe it wasn't a real cave; they did a phenomenal job. Very enjoyable reaction. 👍

Moral of the story: Don’t go caving. In fact, just stay away from nature in general. And if you want a real example and warning, go look up the Nutty Putty Cave incident. I wanna pass out just reading about it!

I need therapy after last 2 films.. 😶 Well done films but I had to check my sanity and pulse a lot.. lol

Nothing can compete with horror for great reactions! The UK/unrated version (which is the one I have), is a full 5 minutes longer than the US version (which you reacted to), so there's definitely more than just the ending that's different. I think it's mostly extended reaction shots, extended shots of gore, some slower edits, etc. But it made staying synced with your reaction almost impossible. Luckily, I found the US version on Tubi.com, where you can watch it free (with occasional ads). So if anyone else doesn't have the right version or you don't want to pay to rent it, check out Tubi (if you're not in the US, you might need a VPN).

Future Boy

Deliverance is coming soon, after winning a poll. So that will be a nice, gentle one for you to relax with 😁

Garry Michael Allen

I found pausing the movie for a split second every now and again kept things in sync but you are right there is definitely more missing in the US version.

Vincent Hollow

I tried watching his movie, The Lair, a few months ago. Got about 10 minutes before I shut it off. It was fuckin awful.

OddThomas

That's a shame; the edited US cut is such bs

Forrest

Sam's comment about the Appalachian Mountains killed me! lol Growing up in central PA near Centralia, I think the only thing I was concerned about in the woods was a hunter accidentally misidentifying you as a deer. Then again, I didn't grow up in the hollers of West Virginia, and haven't heard banjos playing in the woods at dead of night. haha

Forrest

Also, you can say Appalachian as Apple Layshin or Apple Latchin. Kind of differs depending on where in the mountain range you grow up. And yes, some cats, like Mountain Lions (primarily in the Western US) and bobcats (found just about everywhere in the US), scream and cry like babies or women, which can be freaky to hear in the woods.

Duncan

My main takeaway from this reaction ,is that Sam is looking for a good loyal trustworthy friend like Juno in her life ,I hope she finds that someday

Tyler Foster

Nope. The ending is the only difference. The reason the running times are different is due to 5% PAL speedup -- Future Boy, you must be watching an SD presentation. I believe full 1080p presentations of the UK theatrical cut will sync to this video until the ending. (I'm about to test this theory in a minute here.)

Vincent Hollow

"Why do they keep saying they're gonna be late? The cave's not going anywhere." "They mean before it gets dark." "It's a cave, it's always dark." Dead.

Vincent Hollow

For a film and lit class in high school, we would get to show a favorite scene from one of our favorite movies and give a little presentation about it and on my week, I showed the scene of the crawler caught on the infrared camera standing behind Beth. My classmates were...unimpressed, but I didn't care. Movie's so damn good! Great reaction, guys!

Dan Holmes

this movie has my favorite jump scare, the pipe through the cabin window at 16:35 :)

People doing dumb shit in horror movies always used to bug me until i watched all the dumb shit people did when Covid hit; brawling in walmart for toilet paper, buying 2 cart fulls of bottled water (as if the their tap water was going to stop working)... etc etc... never underestimate the power of fear on the weak and the stupid.

Dan Holmes

Also yeah Sam, you're not crazy, Appalachia is terrifying. Look up the Blue People of Kentucky, cryptids, Mothman, the malevolent Bone Lady, the Sop Doll, and of course Skinwalkers 👀

Dan Holmes

Locking themselves inside for 3 years, Arresting people for sitting alone on a beach, Believing the Government etc. lol

Brad P

The whole Charlotte Kirk saga is pretty wild. Even Marshall's successful television directing career came to an end when he got involved with her.

Tyler Foster

Yeah, the US Unrated version synched just fine through the whole movie up until the US ending cut off.

Brad P

Yeah, the only thing different is the ending. My DVD copy of the unrated version also stayed perfectly synched all the way to the Juno jump scare in the car. Lionsgate billing the U.K. version as "Unrated" was just a gimmick to make people think they would be getting more gore.

Dave Carmichael

Tried to watch this twice. Just hoping you guys can get me through it.
