Burt Reynolds ♥️ How about a Burt Reynolds poll? Smokey and the Bandit 1977

Marcus Cato

Oof, I'm genuinely not even sure I want to rewatch this movie, great as it is.

Tyler Foster

At this point I hope Bowfinger is paired with another comedy so you can have an entire week of lighter picks.

Paul Cox

You can solve two problems by watching Smokey and the Bandit. You get to lighten the mood AND see Burt Reynolds in his most iconic role.

Florian Meier

Great Reaction Guys!!! Classic and Disturbing Masterpiece ... Loved to see it again with you ... You must watch more Burt Reynolds... (Think this and Boogie Nights are the only ones on the Channel) I recommend "Smokey and the Bandit" (Classic) and "The Longest Yard" !! You know Ronny Cox as Chief from Beverly Hills Cop Guys ;) .. for More Jon Voight i recommend "Enemy of the State", "Coming Home" and "Runaway Train"

Florian Meier

A Burt Reynolds Poll is also a great Idea for a Poll ... Smoke and the Bandit is fantastic

Great reaction as always. I know that must of been a hard watch - you both looked genuinely uncomfortable during “the scene”, but you perceviered through it and recognized it for the great acting and movie making that it was. My mom told me that when I was five, my parents took me to this movie in the theater when it first came out (not because I wanted to see it or anything, more a couldn’t get a babysitter situation). She said the scene that disturbed me was not the “Squeal like a Pig “ scene, which wouldn’t have meant much to me at that young age, but the hand coming out of the water at the end. Anyway, other recommendations from this same director (John Boorman) include Excalibur and Hope and Glory. And then there’s Zardoz. speaking of “What the fuck was that?”, you should do a WTF was that poll - “Zardoz” deserves to win that (maybe with “Exorcist II:The Heretic”, also directed by Boorman, a close second. For Jon Voight, in addition to “Enemy of the State”, I recommend “Midnight Cowboy” with Dustin Hoffman.

This was the first film for both Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox. You may have looked it up by now but you've seen Cox in several of his most famous roles on the channel: Lt. Bogomil in the first two Beverly Hills Cop films and his legendary villain turns in Robocop and Total Recall. The sheriff at the end was played by James Dickey, the author of the original novel. He was an acclaimed writer and poet but also a bit of a drinker. He showed up on set one day drunk and got into a fistfight with director John Boorman. They made up and Boorman gave him the role in the film. Brian DePalma acknowledged that the image of the hand coming out of the lake was the inspiration for the hand out of the grave dream at the end of Carrie. Other members have already given you recommendations for films with the main actors so I'll give two for 2 Boorman classics: Point Blank, a revenge thriller with Lee Marvin from the 1960s, and Excalibur, his much loved take on the legend of King Arthur.

would have been a far more interesting 3rd act if Ed failed trying to kill the hillbilly and was actually killed himself. because then it comes down to Bobby who has to overcome the hillbilly who assaulted him AND now he alone has to be the one who rescues Lewis - the very man who spent the first half of the movie mocking and ridiculing him for being chubby and inadequate. then you get a nice moment of Bobby earning Lewis's respect.

Ellie Williams

This movie should be remade. It doesn't have to follow the exact story beats or the setting or anything, but a new movie about modern men trying to recapture the experience of living in nature and then things go horribly wrong. And then they have to choose between survival and morality, it's just a classic tale. Every generation should have a version of it.

Actually, I could not watch this with you guys, well I could watch some of it. Being a survivor of what happened to Ned Beatty's character, I could not watch that part. Actually I watched this many years ago before that happened to me, so I know that part. This is basically a horror movie. Drew died, Ed was having terrible emotional issues and bad dreams, and Lewis was injured. ED had his wife for support and Lewis would get over his injury even if he lost his leg. The wone to worry about the most is Bobby. Although he seemed fine by the end of the movie, in real life something was already in the mail, something called PTSD. If Bobby does not get help his prognosis is poor and could lead to suicide. I can tell you from experience how tough his road will be.... I shared some of the most difficult symptoms at the end of these comments I love the outdoors, I have been since I was a kid, I love camping and have hiked the Appalachian Trail many times and have canoed many places including down the current river in Missouri. In all my adventures thankfully people I’ve met along the way have been awesome, but this movie to canoeing is like the movie United 93 to flying. The acting here was very good; Burt Reynolds was the biggest star of the 70’s. You also have to check out Smokey and the Bandit (1977), The Longest Yard (1974), White Lightening and Boogie Nights if you haven’t seen them. For Jon Voight probably his greatest role in Midnight Cowboy, costarring with Dustin Hoffman. One of the greatest movies of all time is that both Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight were nominated for academy awards. You guys know Ronnie Cox, he was the villain in Robocop........................................................................................................................................................................ . Severe Re-Experiencing (Flashbacks & Nightmares)Intrusive Flashbacks: These are vivid, sudden memories that make you feel like the assault is happening in the present. You may re-experience sights, smells, sounds, or physical sensations of the event. Terrifying Nightmares: Recurring dreams about the assault can lead to a fear of sleeping, causing severe sleep deprivation and exhaustion.2. Extreme Hyperarousal & Hypervigilance Constant State of Danger: Survivors often feel as though they are always in danger, leading to "scanning" their environment for threats even in safe spaces. Aggressive Outbursts: You may experience sudden "killing rage" or explosive anger triggered by minor frustrations as a survival mechanism. Exaggerated Startle Response: Jumping or reacting violently to sudden noises or unexpected touch.3. Profound Dissociation Depersonalization & Derealization: This severe symptom involves feeling detached from your own body or feeling like the world around you is unreal or dreamlike. "Psychic Numbing": An inability to feel any emotions, including love or joy, which can lead to complete social withdrawal and isolation.4. Severe Psychological Distress Suicidal Ideation: Survivors of sexual assault are 13 times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population. Intense Shame & Guilt: Deep feelings of being "dirty," "damaged," or "at fault" can lead to self-harm, eating disorders, or substance abuse as coping mechanisms. Paralyzing Anxiety & Panic Attacks: These can include physical symptoms like difficulty breathing, heart palpitations, and fainting.5. Long-term Physical & Relational Impact Chronic Pain: Long-lasting physical symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain, gastrointestinal issues, and severe headaches are common. Avoidance of Intimacy: A severe fear of being touched can disrupt romantic relationships and lead to a permanent loss of interest in sex.If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available 24/7 through the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Pretty rough vacation for Ned Beatty This was filmed about 40 minutes from where I live and the Chattahoochie River was where they did the Olympic Kyaking in the 1996 Atlanta Games. Some great kyaking and canooing, and the back highways are excellent motorcycling routes

Brandon

You can always watch 'Smokey and the Bandit' as a palette cleanser for more Burt Reynolds.

David Wilkins

Great watching this one again with you. Some of the impact of many great movies gets lost with the passing of time. Our world was a very different place, not so long ago. When this was released there hadn’t been anything like it, so it was a shock to the public’s system. But it still holds a lot of power. You won’t get much of a pallet cleanser with Basic Instinct, but you will with the upcoming Bowfinger.

Brandon

Great reaction, by the way. If not for the massive success of 'The Godfather' the same year, I think this might have won Best Picture for 1972. Kind of like 'No Country For Old Men' the director's choice to have almost no music in the film was just perfect. There's the Dueling Banjos scene and a musical cue when Ed falls down the cliffside, but that's it.

Mike the Ginger

Excellent reaction! Ronny Cox as Drew might have looked familiar because he was Bogomil in the first two Beverly Hills Cop films. This is obviously where phrases like "Squeal like a pig" and "Purty mouth" originated.

ButtercupsTrueLove

One of the themes of "Deliverance" is the complacency that people, or in this film more specifically the men, have adapted as part of modern society. If the 'safeties' are removed, how do civilized people react when confronted with something so far removed from their life experiences? Steven Spielberg's early TV film, "Duel" (1971), had a similar theme.

💯 Please ''Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)'' Steve Martin, Michael Caine IMDb 7.4/10 Rotten Tomatoes 89% that would be a super fun double bill Thanks for the consideration Sam

Tyler Foster

For me it would also be another Frank Oz movie with Steve Martin, but it would be the director's cut of Little Shop of Horrors.

Bob McFadden

I’ve made three rafting trips down the Chatooga River where Deliverance was filmed. It’s an exceptionally beautiful and exciting experience. Designated a wild river, development is prohibited within a quarter-mile of the Chatooga’s banks. The only man-made structures are a highway bridge, and the abandoned span that preceded it. The last I heard there have been about 40 deaths recorded on the river, over 30 of those occurred in the year or so after the film was released. Enthusiasm for the movie was such that a lot of people who had no business on the river foolishly tried to run it with all sorts of contraptions, including homemade rafts, inner tubes, etc. Rafting was eventually limited to licensed outfitters. The scene where Bobby and Ed first meet with the sheriff was shot at Woodall Shoals, whose rapids can be seen upriver. A hydraulic in that spot has claimed the lives of about a dozen people. A guide once described it to me as a “genuine killer.“ On one of my trips a river guide pointed out the spot where the assault scene was filmed. It was surprisingly small, just a triangular spit of land, jutting from the riverbank. He told us it was marked on maps as “Sodomy Point.”

Fun Fact: the rock where they go over in the canoe where Burt breaks his leg, that's actually a rock slide at Talulah Gorge here in Georgia and I slid down it in high school when we went out for a hike - such a good time! I need to go back there tbh and do it again!

Jason Dolan

Burt Reynolds movies I recommend: Hooper The Cannonball Run 1&2 Smokey and the Bandit 1&2 Switching Channels City Heat The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Sharkey's Machine The Longest Yard (original AND remake)

Abel Salas Jr

Burt Reynolds movies: The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (musical with Dolly Parton), Smokey and the Bandit (1&2, Jackie Gleason is a treasure) Best Friends (with Goldie Hawn) Cannonball Run (1 &2), The Longest Yard (1974), Gator, Sharky's Machine, City Heat (with Clint Eastwood).

Chris Bruneau

Deliverance is fantastic! Jon Voight, the "city boy" weakling, ends up doing the hard work of saving their asses, when the tough guy in his group (burt reynolds) gets hurt. Its a great character arc. Also, the infamous "squeal like a pig" scene remains so unnerving to me, I can barely bear to watch it. Imagine back in 1972, NOBODY had EVER seen anything like that!

Brent bmc_comix

Wow! Completely agree with your thoughts in the discussion. For Burt Reynolds, gotta mention Smokey and the Bandit! And the only movie I had seen with Ned Beatty prior to the channel was Superman from 1978, you'd get to see him in a much lighter role. Great vid as always guys!

Another Burt classic The Longest Yard (1974) my dad met him in South Carolina at that time. He was playing basket ball. Ball came over. My dad threw it back. And my dad went. Your Burt Reynolds. He couldnt give him his autograph as he had shorts on. But he left a tab at the bar that night for my dad and his cousin!
