Basic Instinct (1992) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Shehab Dawoud

Just as I’ve headed out for practice, of course! But I can’t wait to watch this, one of the most anticipated reactions for the channel😁

Paul Cox

If you google and find the sequel, no you didn't.

Nick Stark

This movie is practically erotica and you’re right, will be very challenging to put on YouTube. Thoroughly enjoyed your reactions

Amper Sand

Looking for watch your reaction, lol. I've watched it on cinema during "its time". Few years ago, I shown to some of my young friends "Nine and half weeks" and "Wild orchid" and they were in shock: "did they allowed this in cinema and on TV"? Think that, in my country, when Gina Lollobrigida died, the national TV announced her as "actress in adult movies" - God, I felt so blessed to have lived better times.

Amper Sand

I remember a critic's comment: "Paul Verhoeven did this movie so well so he basically killed the genre with it".

Steve Mercier

Paul Verhoeven at his naughtiest...before he tipped-over, boner first, into Showgirls. Still managed to make Starship Troopers after that one, which is still one of his best satires (and most misunderstood movies). As for this one...I think Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone manage to elevate this above Skinemax territory, but it treads the line here and there.

Philip Alan

Love this movie. Great reaction! Yeah, Nick read those last pages in her SHOOTER book and it read, "Shooter raced up the staircase to see his partner's dead body. His legs sticking out of the elevator" So that's why he jumped out of the car.

Shehab Dawoud

Okay, I was definitely not expecting such a long discussion as to what was going on. I always thought Catherine was the manipulative murderer all along and that the ice pick at the end was the final confirmation. I never had any doubts. So that was interesting to see. But we absolutely need more erotic thrillers on the channel. It's such an underrated genre. I understand they can be difficult to get on YT, but I think there are a lot of them that are worth it. Body Heat (1981) Body Double (1984) The Last Seduction (1994) Crash (1996) Wild Things (1998) Those are my absolute favorites. Then you also got Dressed To Kill (1980) and Sea of Love (1989) that are a little less graphically sexual, but still have that tension throughout. Most of the films I listed have an investigative element to them.

Shehab Dawoud

Maybe it's just because I like to see Sharon Stone getting busy, but I kinda liked the sequel.

Jason Dolan

Time to bite the bullet and watch SHOWGIRLS

Jason Dolan

Tbh the sex is such a small part of this movie - it’s all about the murder mystery

Jason Dolan

I highly recommend BODY HEAT

Jason Dolan

Hilariously during the Roxy Chase I was also thinking Nick is gonna need a new car after that staircase climb

David Wilkins

I really enjoyed your reaction, and especially the extended discussion afterwards. Catherine showed the ability to enter Nick’s apartment, whatever the method, so she could have entered Beth’s apartment to plant evidence. Beth might have had some quirks and issues, but I think she was setup. I don’t think she killed anyone. Catherine was the multi-level genius criminal. The only thing we don’t know is if she will kill Nick.

David Wilkins

Another good one is Romeo Is Bleeding (1993). It’s a gritty, noir erotic thriller. The cast is fantastic.

Loved you're reactiok guys !!! The Mother of Erotic Thriller ;) ... The Impact at the Time was insane ... The most Paused Scene in cinema history:) ... I love that you're still on the Michael Douglas Trip through his films ... Next must be his Oscar Performance "Wall Street" !!! I recommend also more Erotic Thriller like "Play Misty For Me" (Clint Eastwood), "Body Heat", "Disclosure" and "Wild Things"

Florian Meier

PS: loved your Outro Discussion !! I personally loved the ending with the mystery like this... i Told my wife the Story with the Sharon Stone boobs you read... :) thats a intresting theory ...

For me, watching Basic Instinct, one thing that seems obvious (and perhaps easier to agree on than the plot) is that it is constantly paying homage to Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. A cop with a tragic backstory, in a twisty San Francisco-set mystery that moves from the city to the coastline, throughout which he is haunted by a blonde and a brunette who seem like mirror images of each other. Lots of shots looking straight down stairwells, and this time through, I even caught a tip of the hat that I don't think I ever noticed before: one of the times Catherine comes to visit Nick in his apartment, Nick has on a green sweater, just like Jimmy Stewart wears when Kim Novak wakes up in his apartment after diving into the ocean. While my reaction to the movie is more like Sam's, I agree with what Daniel is saying, which is not that any one of the possible endings is unsatisfying, but that there is enough space in the things the movie shows us for certain that other things could be possible. While the Reddit explanations are great in that they reveal reasoning and layers to the degree to which Catherine's obsession could have gone that I wasn't even thinking about, I can't necessarily think of any reason why it is *not possible* to say that Beth, for example, was obsessed with Catherine and did kill Nilsen, even if one still says that Catherine is ultimately a killer. The one thing I will mention re: Daniel's questions at the end: the reason Beth would be completely clean is the SFPD rain slicker hidden in the hallway. With the wig over the face and the slicker covering the whole body, it wouldn't take much to clean off, and the fact that it's an SFPD rain slicker also lends further credence to the idea that Beth did it. While Memories of Murder (2003), by Bong Joon Ho, director of Parasite, is the #1 Korean movie I'd love to see a reaction to, that's more of a straight crime thriller than this -- I think the experience of watching that movie will be a little more like a drama than a guessing game like this one. For that, I recommend the incredible Decision to Leave (2022), by Park Chan-Wook, director of Oldboy and The Handmaiden. Like this, I sense the influence of Vertigo, in a twisty back-and-forth story that will keep you guessing (and which offers a more conclusive ending).

''Unfaithful (2002)''

Dave Carmichael

I couldn't possibly care less, who killed whom.

Amper Sand

A logic continuation to watch would be "Hot Shots! Part Deux", it settles once and forever Catherine-Beth relationship :)))

Garry Michael Allen

I actually prefer the sequel but keep it to yourself. I’m a massive David Morrissey fan so that might be why.

Garry Michael Allen

Small bit of trivia (unless it’s an urban myth) the actor in the opening kill was actually stabbed a handful of times accidentally as [spoiler] missed the blood pads placed on his body and he had to be rushed to hospital. They don’t make movies like this any more.

Shehab Dawoud

I haven't seen Romeo Is Bleeding. Great cast, but what's up with the bad reviews? I like Unfaithful a lot, but it's drama, not thriller.

Birdie Num Num

bad reviews? Romeo is Bleeding has a higher metacritic score than Basic Instinct.

Gary

Great reaction guy's, This movie is not ambiguous at all, it's Sharon Stones Charecter all along, she just a psychopath and a manipulative freak. Honestly you are thinking way to much about it, the film shows you facts. All the other little rabbit holes will ultimately circle back to Catherine. Although this film is a lot of tits and sex, it is actually a good suspenseful thriller at heart and yes I does give you a few moments when you may doubt the obvious thing of it actually being Catherine, it really is just a simple nut job killer chick flick fundamentally. Glad to see I'm not the only one bothered by the ice on the floor😂. If you want a great movie try "the invisible guest" or "don't say a word" both excellent mystery films but foreign.

Shehab Dawoud

27% on Rotten Tomatoes. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, I'm just curious as to why. Basic Instinct is at least iconic.

James MacDonald

This is like watching porn with your parents. So uncomfortable during those sex scenes!

Shehab Dawoud

I like Disclosure but it went from being an erotic thriller to a corporate thriller really fast. It’s much more the latter.

David Wilkins

This was edgy-mainstream when released, and it’s interesting how we’ve changed culturally in a fairly short time. I’ve noticed a similar awkwardness among younger viewers, even to much milder examples from the 80s and 90s. We’ve supposedly become more decadent, but that’s not what I see through aging eyes. A more mainstream portrayal of gay or lesbian people is as “provocative” as it gets.

Chris Bruneau

It was Catherine all along. The clues are all there. She was obsessed with Beth Garner, murdered her husband, and bribed a crooked cop to get the file away from the campus police. Who do you thunk gave Nikson the 50,000 in his secret account??? Its a brilliant film 😎

TBR Schmitt

LOL! That’s how I felt about The Handmaiden -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We went way too far in our theories haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

How did we miss the connections to Vertigo! A great comment, Tyler! Ooh I would love to see more Bong Joon Ho’s work! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I think you’re right! Nick’s going to get it at some point lol his time is coming! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We completely missed the excerpt from her book! That makes more sense! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL! Times have definitely changed! -Sam

Tyler Foster

The thing about Romeo is Bleeding is that it's unhinged. Lena Olin gives one of the most intense performances I've ever seen. I agree that it's a good movie, but I also think it's no surprise that the movie inspires a love-it-or-hate-it reaction.

Nick Stark

ABSOLUTELY!! BODY HEAT is in the AFI top movies of all time. It also launched the careers of both William Hurt & Kathleen Turner. As I’m sure you know. It would be awesome if they were the first to react.

Amper Sand

Ah, Sam, both are great, except that while the second one is spoofing "Rambo" and "Basic Instinct", the first one is mostly "Top Gun" and "Nine and Half Weeks" :))

Amper Sand

Why? I find it rather amusing seeing younger people realising their parents were as dirty - if not dirtier - than they are, enjoyed living their life as much - if not more - than they do :)))

Tiffany Payne

This .movie is just okay. It doesn't follow just one storyline- it's confusing, not just about one thing. Next do URBAN COWBOY if you hasn't. This movie is about sex addicts; IDK what the "basic instinct" has to do with this actual movie

Tiffany Payne

PS ypu missed the foreshadowing in Catherine's final book it said his partner's dead body, printing... They could have saved a lot of time & money by taking shit out & blood isn't that red

Tiffany Payne

This whole movie sucks in general.

David Martin

I like all of your movies on the list, especially Body Heat and The Last Seduction. But this movie did not interest me at all. The dialog was insipid, like a thousand other movies, just with the words "Sex" and "Fuck" a lot. I didn't get any chemistry between the characters -- just a director's efforts to force some. It does definitely not compare to any of the movies on your list.

Milton Reduxed

What's cool about this movie is you can go and make a sandwich at the halfway point, let the film play, and miss none of the plot

Milton Reduxed

That 0.3 seconds made Sharon Stone the most famous woman in the world practically overnight

ErikEatsMovies

Now that you have seen "Fatal Attraction" and "Basic Instinct" you could check out "Fatal Instinct" (1993), which is a spoof of both of these movies.

Backlog Andy M.

Saw this at the right age with my old girlfriend as a teenager. Youtube the sex scene. Edit, edit, edit, 😬😬😆
