The Lighthouse (2019) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Felix

remember seeing this when it first came out and being simultaneously confused and blown away lol

One of the most unique and bizarre movies you will ever watch.

PIG

Up my alley.

Paul Cox

I was too old for the Twilight franchise (and I don't think it's my vibe anyway), but I'm so proud of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart both growing up to play so many kinds of challenging roles.

Chris

Eggers supremacy 🙌

Steve Mercier

Two fuckng spectacular movies dropped in one afternoon...you guys love me...you really, really love me.

I just want to say that I really appreciate the wide cinematic variety you folks have sampled recently. I love seeing you tackle older classic films like Stalag 17, but also cheered when you did One Battle After Another. I'm someone who loves both "high art" and "low art" films, and hope you keep shaking it up! This was a fun one to watch. I had never considered the "two Toms" theory before, and thought your discussion of that was interesting.

Shehab Dawoud

This film took a lot of inspiration from The Shining: A few people stranded in a foreign place, doing a job. The place that may or may not be possessed/have powers that influences the people. A story about a previous worker going crazy and dying. People with troubled pasts and alcohol issues. Unreliable narrators. Sense of time being thrown out the window. A storm makes it difficult for the people to get out. The only vehicle (lifeboat/snowcat) being sabotaged. They even throw in a chase scene with an axe where Willem Dafoe is limping in a similar way to Jack Nicholson. There are many more similarities. It's definitely unsettling but I found it much more funny than you guys. Some of the lines are delivered in a hilarious way. I hope you watch The Northman and Nosferatu (October?) before Robert Eggers' werewolf film comes out this December.

I would never work at a place where my toilet was a pot under my bed. I'd jump off the cliff and swim after the boat once I saw that.

The horn you guys kept hearing was from the lighthouse. The fog was so thick, the light wouldn't have been enough to warn oncoming boats, so the foghorn gave an additional warning system. I would say the inconsistency of the sound would probably have to do with the weather (clear days and nights likely would be fine with just the light) but it might also be to add another layer of confusion and madness.

This was one of the last movies I saw at the famous Cinerama Dome in Hollywood(closed during COVID and never re-opened). There was a Q&A with Eggers, Dafoe and Pattinson afterwards. They talked a bit about farting. The lantern was on display in the lobby, think I have a pic of it on my phone.

Eggers used a unusual aspect ratio of 1.19:1 for this, a ratio not used since early sound films. For perspective, Casablanca had an aspect ratio of 1.37:1 so this was a much more narrow image than that. If I was only able to pick one film to see in the theater for the rest of the year, I'd pick his upcoming Werwulf. His films simply need to be seen on the big screen imo.

Pattinson stated in GQ that he thinks the film is "100% a comedy" and how when the film was up for awards season, he tried to convince the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that the film should be eligible for a nomination in the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. - from wikipedia

Felix

i was at that same screening! sad the dome has never re opened

I want to love Eggers’ movies more than I actually do. They are beautifully made and always ‘interesting’ but I never connect with them for some reason. It might be because they feel vibe driven rather than having a clean narrative. I don’t know. Technically they are stunning but not films I ever want to revisit.

Guess you have enough for a Willem Dafoe playlist - Platoon, To Live and Die in LA, Mississippi Burning, Grand Budapest Hotel, Inside Man, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Lighthouse

Matt

My favorite Robert Eggers and favorite Robert Pattinson 😊

OddThomas

The Northman remains my favourite RE

TBR Schmitt

Oh wow, we totally didn't make that connection but I love it! LOL it sounds like there are others that also thought this was funnier than we did - maybe on a second watch! We'll definitely be checking out more Eggers! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

TBR Schmitt
