You should do a Sam Neill film in honor of his passing

Athos Count de la Fère

Some trivia; The Trans Am jump over the dismantled bridge is real. When the car landed on the other side it was totaled and not drivable. Jackie Gleason, as Buford T Justice ad-libed many of his lines. When this movie came out, Coors beer could not be sold east of the Mississippi River. It was illegal. Everyone on the east coast wanted Coors but couldn't get it. Think of a Citizens Band Radio (CB) handle as something similar to a Twitter (X) handle. CB radios were popular with truckers, and that popularity spread to everyday non-truckers across the country. It had its own slang terms. An oil truck was a "rolling refinery" cops were "bears" or "smokey", a roadside bar/diner was a "choke n puke".

What a great movie. I don't know if u noticed when they picked up the Coors beer the store had a Happy Birthday America banner. The movie came out in 1977 and was made in 1976 so that banner was celebrating the Bicentennial America's 200 yr anniversary. Thought that was a cool thing since we just had the 250th yr birthday.

This was the 2nd highest grossing movie of 1977. Only the original Star Wars topped it. Jackie Gleason steals the movie. This was a culture making movie. Everyone was into the CB culture afterward and the Trans AM was the car everyone wanted. But come on an hour into the movie your didn't know Smokie was the Trucker name for the cops lol!

Keith Brown

This 1977 movie was #2 at the Box Office . The only movie that year that made more money was Star Wars . The Director Hal Needham was for years before this was a stuntman and then a stunt coordinator for many movies and TV shows in the 50's ,60's and 70's before becoming a director in the 80's. He was friends with Burt Reynolds and directed him in several more movies. The Smokey sequel, Cannonball Run, Cannonball Run II, Hooper and Stroker Ace.

Put the rest of mission impossible on Early access please

Jerry Reed (Snowman) was actually a musician first, actor second. The themes from this film are performed by him, but if you really wanna see something cool just go down a youtube rabbit hole watching him play guitar.

Good news, Sam confirmed in the chat that In the Mouth of Madness will be on the schedule very soon.

Such a classic !!! Always fun to watch !! Love Jackie Gleason in this ... Burt and Sally were a couple in this Time!! Next Burt should be "The Longest Yard" (1974) and next Sally Field "Steel Magnolias" (1989)

This film was so huge in the late 70s early 80s. That i remember UK car dealerships were selling the bandit car at places. I remember seeing a bunch. A big american car on UK roads then. Yep you stood out 😆

PIG

My first favorite movie as a kid about three or four years old. Four decades later, I wanna see what I think now.

Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields chemistry in this movie is soo good

Some other good car movies: Drive, Christine (John Carpenter), The Dukes of Hazzard movie (the car stunts are great even if the script isn't - and Burt has a cameo). The TV show version from the 70s was inspired by Smokey & the Bandit.

Michael Trivette

A bunch of stunt men were sitting around (prolly drinking some Coors) and thought, "We should make a movie ourselves" So we got Smokey and the Bandit.

More Burt Films to react : White Lighting (1973) Hustle (1975) Gator (1976) Semi-Tough (1977) Hooper (1978)

First, avoid the two sequels to this, they are dreadful. Other Burt Reynolds movies you should check out.... Shamus (1973; Thriller) White Lightning (1973; Action) The Longest Yard (1974; Sports-Comedy) Hustle (1975; Neo-Noir) Gator (1976; Action) The Cannonball Run (1981; Comedy) Sharky's Machine (1981; Thriller) The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982; Musical-Comedy)

Abel Salas Jr

If you'd like some more Burt Reynolds suggestions here are a few. Navajo Joe, The Longeat Yard (hes in both the original and has a supporting role in the remake), Best Friends (with Goldie Hawn), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (with Dolly Parton), Cannonball Run, City Heat (with Clint Eastwood).

Also, wanted to say a little something about the music. Jerry Reed (Snowman) was a very great country music artist and regarded as 1 of the greatest guitarist of his time. There's a story that Elvis wanted to do a cover of Reed's Guitar Man and they couldn't get the guitar to sound right. The session guitarist they had just couldn't match it. As it was Reed was fishing nearby when they came to get him. When he got to the record studio he told them the reason they couldn't get the sound to match his was that he didnt tune his guitar traditionally. So they hired him to play the part on the spot. So if you listen to either version of the song its still Jerry Reed doing the picking. Also, Jackie Gleason in addition to being great on the sitcom The Honeymooners also had his own orchestra that he conducted in spite of never being a traditionally trained musician. You've actually heard a song of his even if you weren't aware. But in the Better Call Saul episode Wine and Roses in the opening montage where the FBI are confiscating everything from his home its The Jackie Gleason orchestra playing The Days of Wine and Roses (which is also an excellent movie incidentally.)

bit late to the party, but adding my voice to the choir of people saying, do Cannonball Run at some point.. also Burt Reynolds, and by the same director..

I think you may have missed it; the bet was raised to "Double or Nothing" ($160,000 or nothing) to get the clam chowder from Boston.
