Not sure what the consensus around which Alexander Payne film to watch next would be, but I'd suggest Election (1999) with Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick. There's also Citizen Ruth (1996) with Laura Dern in a hell of a role.

This movie really surprised me when it came out. After seeing Thomas Hayden Church in stuff like Wings and Tombstone, the fact he could carry his weight in a movie like this was eye opening. the guy can act

Thomas Hayden Church Lost to Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) at the Oscars, but what a great Perfomance from him ... watched only one Time and really liked it .... I recommend another Payne film "About Schmidt" from 2002 with Jack Nicholson

Agree with Election. Also Nebraska(2013) and The Descendants (2011) are pretty good. Edited to add that Principal Hendricks from Election has a cameo in this movie- he's the "Hey keep it down buddy" when Jack is talking dirty at the country club.

Glad you guys really enjoyed this one. "Chill chaos" is actually the perfect description. I love the similarities between Miles and Jack. Miles is an introvert, with Jack being more of the extrovert. Yet they are both very alike in many ways. You can see how they've been friends for so many years. They both have a way of being dishonest and riding it out for too long. To the point that they get severely punished and don't fully learn their lessons. The fact that Maya calls Miles at the end of the film is a small miracle. I love open endings, but I can't help but hope it works out between them. When Jack has his breakdown after fleeing that woman's house naked, I think Miles sees something in himself. Despite Jack's faults, I don't think he wants him to go through years of depression like he did with his divorce. "Frass" is a scientific term for insect excrement. So Frass Canyon is the perfect name for a place that makes generic wine that Miles has no respect for. Jessica Hecht, who plays Miles' ex-wife was also the other woman in Friends. She is the woman that Ross' wife left him for at the beginning of the series. Lastly, if you ever drink wine trying drinking it out of an unglazed clay cup. The porous surface of the inside of the glass increases oxidation, reduced acidity and helps create more enjoyable and mellow flavor. I don't consider myself a wine guy, but I can totally taste the difference.

So glad you guys liked this movie - I was a little worried when Daniel said he wasn't a wine guy :) . Yup life and relationships are messy and this a good , honest, sometimes humorous and bittersweet depiction of it. Glad that Dan picked up on the metaphor of the vulnerability of the Pinot Noir grapes (not that it wasn't obvious). And yes, I agree that Miles went to get the '61 Cheval Blanc (which by the way is a Merlot- which is why , or partly why Miles hated on Merlot earlier- not that he is a critic of it but he associates it with Victoria) because after learning that Victoria was pregnant, he knew that there was no possibility of getting back together with her. Why drink it so unceremoniously like that in a fast food joint? 1) When you get a gut punch of news like that, you don't want to be around other people, 2) Miles gave up any pretention that there was going to be any celebration with it. Also, am I wrong Sam that you knew Victoria was pregnant as soon as she said she wasn't drinking? Your expression certainly seemed that way. Anyway, great reaction as usual.

"Come on, man. You know. Hemingway, Sexton, Plath, Woolf. You can't kill yourself before you're even published!" "What about the guy who wrote Confederacy of Dunces? He committed suicide before he was published. Look how famous he is!"

I think you guys were a little hard on Miles. I felt totally sorry for Miles, and I thought Jack was a self-serving womanizer, and his tears after he was caught by the man's wife was just acting. I didn’t buy them one bit. I actually thought the building of Miles and Mia’s relationship was realistic, vs. meeting some woman and just jumping in bed. He seemed to also be in a realistic struggle and not totally over his past relationship, and it was nice to see that struggle play out and his love for Mia grow. Anyone who has been in a long-term relationship knows the reality of lingering feelings that have to be resolved before a new sincere commitment. Oh, a bit of trivia, when Miles went to see his mother and was sup in her room taking the money there was a picture of him and an older man. Well that was Paul Giamatti’s real life father His father, Bart Giamatti, was a Yale University professor who later became president of the university and later commissioner of Major League Baseball. He died of a heart attack at only 51 years of age, so he probably died shortly after around the time the picture was taken. His sadness in looking at the picture wasn’t acting, that was real feeling. Paul Giamatti should have won the Oscar for his role.

Watching this with a bottle of wine, have to save it for the weekend... can't wait

The movie stars with a knock on the door. It ends with a knock on the door. George Clooney really wanted to play the role of Jack, but director Alexander Payne didn't believe people would believe him as a failed actor. Clooney later starred in Alexander Payne's Hawaii movie The Descendants. Jessica Hecht plays Miles' ex-wife. Also Susan, Ross ex-wife's new wife on Friends and Gretchen in Breaking Bad. She seems to find herself in small roles on all time great things.

God, I love this film! We have re-watched Maya's beautiful wine speech a hundred times! she was soooo good in this film. Also, on a personal note--My best friend in college was just like Jack, and I had many years of bailing him out of trouble. So this film hits really close to home. I think all guys have one friend who is kind of a fuck-up, but you love them and always have to come rescue them!!!!

What would you do with a magazine but read it T.B.R?

Sam has suggested that persistence pays off. Please tell me that at least one of you hasn't seen Limitless 2011 Bradley Cooper 7.4 IMDB.

I never realized how cringe worthy some scenes are. On the commentary Thomas Hayden church mentioned the scene with the kid as being strange, and not understanding how this lady would let some strange dude look after her child.
