Asian martial arts poll - no US movies allowed

EdmanXERO

Gotta have Michael (2026) on here. 😯

Angel Pagan

I’ve been recommending Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story every month for the spin wheel and am disappointed it didn’t make this poll. :(

Walter White

I’m sad that Micheal (2026) isn’t on here

Dan

Ong Bak

Brian Anthony

After do the right thing..following up with Malcolm makes sense.Spikes best movie easily.

Tyler Foster

Voted for most of these but excited to see Malcolm X already taking a lead.

James

U forgot Jungle.

Athos Count de la Fère

Cinderella Man. My grandparents were the same ages as the kids in that movie. I finally understood what it was like for them growing up during the Great Depression.

Will Knox

Malcolm X is such an incredible film! Denzel Washington should have won the Oscar for that, in my opinion. A suggestion for a really good biopic is Coal Miner's Daughter with Sissy Spacek! She is awesome as Loretta Lynn and she definitely deserved the Oscar!

Will Knox

I agree. One of the best films of the 90's 💯

OddThomas

One Life, Elvis (2022)

jjkcharlie

La Bamba, Tucker: the man and his dream, the doors, Selena, blow, and rhapsody in blue.

Florian Meier

Good Poll !! I would add "Straight Outta Compton" to it ... For me it is "Gorillas in the Mist"

thansen

The Last Emperor and The Pianist are my favorites. No doubt Malcolm X will win.

Smooticus

ah, another poll with so many selections the winning movie has like 6 votes lol

David Riedel

I remember seeing "Malcolm X" in the theater when it came out. I watch it about once a year and it remains one of the best movies I've ever seen. If I could vote for it twice, I would. Great storytelling, camera work, and it's kind of unreal how much Denzel Washington embodies Malcolm X, especially the later years.

Jeromy M

Into the Wild and Kings Speech for the win

Jimbob

There’s a lot on here I’ve seen once and would enjoy the chance to revisit. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a beautiful, tragic film but unlikely to win. True story, and foreign language as well, so maybe it should be in the “ticks boxes for all the other polls” polls.

QuiGon_Jim

For a future poll of the same genre, I'd like to recommend 'My Left Foot. Stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Directed by Jim Sheridan

Hunter DeRensis

All That Jazz (1979) is autobiographical and would make a great inclusion on a future poll.

Steve Mercier

I doubt City of God will win...but CITY OF GOD!!!!!!!

David Wilkins

Lots of good ones, and many that will probably have to wait for a monthly drawing win. Another to consider for the future is Michael Collins (1996). Great story with a great cast about an Irish leader during the “troubles” of the early 1900s. Liam Neeson plays Collins, and does an excellent job. Another great one is Rob Roy (1995), another great cast, with Neeson again in the lead. He had a great thing going in the 90s, then he became an “action hero”.

Shehab Dawoud

There are some very good films on this list but this is one of the most obvious winners so far. One film is just above the rest.

Eric

Isn't that movie missing a significant portion of his life? Kinda like how Gandhi ignores the same part of his life.

PIG

Yeah it just gets better with each watch, one of the few movies that can do that.

Gayle ED

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson, Deepwater Horizon and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are other good movies based off true stories. (If not already seen)

Marcus Cato

One of my favorite movies of all time, and definitely my favorite musical of all time. Got to see it in the big screen a few months ago and every seat was sold out! Trivia: it's obvious someone on Better Call Saul agrees with me because they referenced that famous line and even used a song from it.

Paul Cox

iirc Sully is one they've seen off-channel.

Paul Cox

Any biopic that has not only the full authorization of the estate, especially when unsavory details are involved, but actually has their fingerprints all over it is a no-go for me. They're trying to rehab his legacy in such a shameless manner.

Matt

First Man 2018 about Neil Armstrong

aarswft

I'd REALLY like to see the demographic breakdown of this vote.

Brent bmc_comix

I know! Hoping it'll end up on the channel eventually! :)

penoyer79

Awakening is the correct answer.

Dan Holmes

The Pianist is a masterpiece but i'm voting for Ed Wood

Dan Holmes

Walk the Line is one of my favorite biopics. Directed by James Mangold, great music, great performances, tons of fun, really underrated. Hope you check it out someday. And, not a biopic, but I would love for you two to watch The Fountain (2006) just think you'll dig it :)

Birdie Num Num

Is the Michael situation really that much different than say Spike Lee consulting with Malcolm X's widow? She even gets a historical consultant credit on the film. Many biopics often have the blessing of their relatives etc. I'm sure you remember how controversial The Hurricane was (they sanitized the darker aspects of that character) . I thought it was messed up what Cinderella Man did with the Max Baer character(he was nothing like the asshole onscreen) So really Michael is just par for the course in the history of biopics omitting info - and at least in this case every one on the planet knows what they are omitting. How many watching The Hurricane or Cinderella Man think everything in the movie is 100% accurate?

Paul Cox

Consulting with family and doing the family's bidding are different things. I know biopics dramatize and omit information in nearly every situation (it's why I'll almost always prefer a thorough documentary to a narrative film), but the Michael situation strikes me as particularly egregious.

Lamar Savage

Lincoln AND The King's Speech are both absolute must-watch films!!

Birdie Num Num

that's quite a time range. would be odd to see Universal horror in a poll with say, The Hills Have Eyes. what would you put in the poll? Besides Horror of Dracula.

Richard Maurer

I’m mostly going right up to 1980 because the eighties and beyond have reached a point of over-representation in reaction videos. As for recommendations I could list dozens of films but it would basically be Universal, Hammer, plus stand-outs from the 60’s and 70’s.

Brian Anthony

I think they tried to address it but because of legal issues..they said they couldn’t if I’m not mistaken.

John George

Do you have to watch Malcolm I through to Malcolm IX to enjoy Malcolm X?

Paul Cox

If it wins (and I'm still pulling for Malcolm X), any viewing of Ed Wood should be paired with the actual Plan 9. The only question is before or after—and I'd say after.

Will Knox

I just thought of another amazing biopic...What's Love Got to do With it? Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne are incredible as Tina and Ike Turner!

Birdie Num Num

Indiewire picked it as the best film of the 70s!

Vincent Hollow

I actually really enjoyed The Hurricane (one of my favorite Denzel roles), but had no idea how much of the "dark stuff" was dialed down or removed until after reading Rubin Carter's autobiography, The Sixteenth Round. It was actually one of the tougher reads I've done in recent memory.

Paul Cox

I learned during discussions after PiB watched Awakenings that Dr. Sacks, who the Robin Williams character was based on, actually fabricated a bunch of the information, and the patient De Niro's Leonard was based on was actually a pretty terrible dude.

Wesley

Oh my god Ed Wood is winning. I wonder if it might be fun to also watch Plan 9 from Outer Space after that film.

Birdie Num Num

I can only assume most haven't seen it, only 8 votes??

Cam Callahan

Milk and October Sky and so damn good, but I had to put my vote for one of my all time favorites, Ed Wood. Possibly Burton’s best film. 🧛🏼‍♂️

Birdie Num Num

Wow, this could go down to the wire. Hope some people make some changes on the last day so we get a tie. I know I will if necessary:)

Mike Gonzalez

Casualties of War. Overlooked Vietnam war film based on a true story.

Micah Silva

I hope y’all check out Twin Peaks soon •3•

Brian Anthony

I haven’t seen Awakenings in years..I remember liking it.I didn’t know so many other people liked it so much.

Browniewin

So many good choices it was hard for me to pick one, please, if not now in future do watch October Sky, The Kings Speech, Milk, The Imitation Game, Cinderella Man, Capote, Malcom X.

Birdie Num Num

Meryl Streep has only been on the channel once(Deer Hunter), I think. She was killing it with the true stories in the 80s - Silkwood, Out of Africa, A Cry in the Dark(with Sam Neill)

jjkcharlie

I was the only Native in the theater.

Carlos Murphy

Nixon is such a great sleeper movie. I hope it makes a shock comeback in the poll!

Tyler Foster

Honestly, let's just hope that the top two being within a one-vote margin means both end up appearing on the channel with the runner-up popping up in one of the free spots some week.

Tim McKnight

House of Flying Daggers! YEAH BWOYEEE!! That movie is beautiful!

Birdie Num Num

Still waiting for Face/Off. Lost to Warriors by one vote in Jan 2025 Action Poll(and lost like 5 action polls prior to that)

Tyler Foster

Me too! Face/Off could easily be an all-timer TBR reaction. And hell yeah -- dead heat for Ed Wood and Malcolm X. Give us both!

David Wilkins

It’s all my fault. 😶 Has this happened before? Will we actually get both?

Shehab Dawoud

I know that for some people, it was more about Malcolm X not getting watched as opposed to Ed Wood actually getting watched. Tough luck.

Tim McKnight

Neck n neck for like 3 days! (Yeah, I’ve been checking! 😂). Gotta say I’m routing for the Malcolm X watch along. I saw that when I was 12 when it originally came out - absolutely changed my life. Although based on the poll, I’m gonna check out that Ed Wood movie… never heard of the fella but with so many votes… must be worth a watch.

Paul Cox

Take your time. You don't have to do both reactions back to back, and really it doesn't matter which one gets watched first. Just happy to know they'll both be on the schedule in the near future.

Matthew Maxon

61* should have been on the list. Same with the Jackie Robinson Story.
