IT (1990) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

OddThomas

Both are great. The mini-series is more focused on the characters as special effects in the 90s on TV were so expensive they were used sparingly. The movies are bigger and faster paced but not necessarily better. Both have their merits. The recent TV series Welcome to Derry is equally as good, so if you do watch the movies you'll want to watch WTD too. For more Tim Curry: Congo (fun 90s adventure horror)

The original novel was over 1,000 pages long so this miniseries could really only do a thumbnail sketch of the story. The two more recent films give you quite a bit more detail from the book. The excellent Welcome to Derry series is where they really get into the lore and history of IT including the origin of Pennywise the Clown. It also has a great role for a character from another Stephen King story who you will know from one of your earlier reactions (actually more than one!). Tommy Lee Wallace, the director of this version, was an early colleague of John Carpenter and worked as a production designer on his early films. Among his many contributions, he created the original Michael Myers mask by redesigning the pre-existing Captain Kirk mask and he actually plays Michael during a few sequences in the film (most notably the closet attack scene).

Just watching the intro, but I assumed for some reason you'd already watched the newer IT and you were just wanting to watch the old school version, but now I'm even more excited, let's go. Oh, and agreed about Tim Curry and I know I always requesting this, but LEGEND (1985), that was actually my introduction to Tim Curry. Only problem is that's the UK extended whatever version IS better, but I can't find it streaming anywhere the US version is still awesome. I just think the extended is a much more complete movie, Ridley Scott second guessed himself and it pretty much flopped in the States anyway so he might as well have gone with the longer version that people like me would later appreciate. Anyways, back to IT!

"Why are the kids so mean?" Not just kids, but grownups too. This is shown a little more in the movies but best explained in the book. If you enjoy being scared shitless, I highly recommend reading IT.

Hope you guys watch the other great Stephen King mini-series "The Stand (1994)" Stephen King wanted the book to be a contemporary American epic in the spirit of Lord of the Rings. I was young when it came out, but it was a big deal. Something like 20 million people watched each episode.

Ellie Williams

Also Sam/Daniel, does your child like clowns? Do any kids today like clowns? I wonder if they'll go the way of ventriloquists and animal tamers.

Marcus Cato

I think you are right about that. Clowns just seem menacing st this point. 😂

Would've never guessed that you hadn't seen any IT. I guess I know what will be on the schedule in October. The newer ones are pretty faithful although it changes some things and has more modern sensibilities and humor.

Future Boy

I love The Stand. I watched it so many times as a kid. It's a 4 part mini series, so twice as long as "It." But maybe it could work well for October, watching one part a week. Just make sure you watch the 90s version, and not the 2020 remake.

Great Reaction to a Childhood Nightmare of me :) saw the first Remake, was good ... would be perfect for spooky season in October

A great Seth Green film to watch for Halloween is Idle Hands (1999). And he's in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (TV show), which is iconic.

So without going into the booktoo much, IT or Pennywise is a psychic vampire. It feeds off fear. It's also an other worldly creature. It came from the space between dimensions where other beasties inhabit. Those who get snared in It's deadlights end up there and their minds are destroyed in the process. Prevailing against the deadlights also takes a particular mindset to fend it off. It's always been Bill who was the strongest. For 1990, It's final form is pretty hokey but in the books, the final form though arachnid like is far more gruesome. The mini-series is also a far more faithful adaptation of the book, both versions omit one particular scene which if you ever read it, will self explanatory and why writing high on coke is never a good thing.

Mike the Ginger

I turned this on Friday night not expecting to watch the entire three hours, but I did! Sam looked so happy when the friends said they were gonna make a dam, but I knew it was straight denial cope because she knew more terror was on the way. I did begin to fall asleep when Mike was stabbed and the jumpscare woke me and scared the crap outta me. I could tell you both really liked this. Good reaction!

PIG

The only book that ever scared me, my whole life was IT. I read it when I was 12. The opening part where the little brother loses his arm to the gutter, ripped from his shoulder socket by the sheer force of Pennywise, had me freaking out and wondering if the clown is under my bed in the middle of the night.

Matt

WIDOWS BAY for a horror/ comedy series 👻

Matt

This was great, I'd never seen IT before so I'm glad I checked it out with your reaction, I'm also interested in the new ones now so I'd be happy if you guys decide to do that at some point ✌️

Matt

I'd recommend ANNIE 1982 for another Tim Curry, although its Carol Burnett that steals the show in that one

OddThomas

RIp Tim Curry :(

Paul Cox

Probably a very tall order to move this one up on the schedule to Saturday, but thought I'd ask.

Tyler Foster

You can only get the longer version on disc, but I would also probably guess that if enough people told them as fans of the film that the longer version was the one worth doing, it could be worked out.

Tyler Foster

The newer It films are a mixed bag for me personally as films, but they are great and enjoyable as reactions because I think that's a me thing, and seeing how much other people get freaked out by them is a great time. I'd probably even rewatch both movies just to get the full experience of seeing you two react to the differences between the old version and the new version. It'd also just be fun to see you find out about who they've found for the two casts, young and old. While I don't really expect my ability to submit it for the spin wheel will be reinstated (and admittedly I have many other choices that would come first), I have to ask: you've both seen Josie and the Pussycats, but do either of you actually remember anything about it? I can't imagine it's been less than, say, ten years for either of you. (Seth Green is in it.)

Spme this movie makes me emotional like the beginning when Bill is telling Audra about what happened to George before he leaves.
