Sam/Daniel, what TV show would you want to live in? Mine would be on Star Trek: The Next Generation. I could be on the Enterprise with Captain Picard (my favorite fictional character) where people are kind and I could replicate anything I want.

Paul Cox

Gary Ross doesn't have an extensive filmography as a director, but I'd recommend Seabiscuit for both him and Toby Maguire in an encore team up.

Kevin Charley

I don't know. If I was in Star Trek I'd want to be anywhere but the Enterprise. Everywhere else is a utopia, but the Enterprise keeps running into situations where I'm the one that's gonna be killed. I doubt I'd be in the opening credits.

Jen Barnes

I knew you'd love this movie! The apple symbolizes knowledge. I second the recommendation of Seabiscuit.

Steve Mercier

I'm old, and saw this in theaters because I had a crush on Reese Witherspoon and HOLY SHIT THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME!!! IS AWESOME!!! I was always of the opinion that this movie just barely scrapes past not being preachy, but I think you convinced me that isn't preachy at all. So...good shit. Oh, and I still have a crush on Reese Witherspoon.

Joe Lazarus

For me, I'd like to live in the 60s Twilight Zone for the comforting mid-century suburban aesthetic, the promise of poetic cosmic justice, or the thrill of encountering real magic and mystery.

Great reaction! I’ve admired this one for a long time, and it hasn’t lost anything through the years. You mentioned that it didn’t seem widely known, and that has become true for a huge number of really good movies. The good news is, there are a lot of great movies waiting to be appreciated by a new audience. Another high recommendation for Maguire movies is Wonder Boys (2000). It’s my favorite role from both him and Michael Douglas. The whole cast is loaded, including Frances McDormand and Robert Downey Jr. And it’s from the director of L.A. Confidential.

What’s beyond Pleasantville?

Matthew Maxon

For me it would be Deep Space Nine. I think id like Bajor.

Scott

Yes, Seabiscuit is great, also "The Cider House Rules" (1999) with Tobey Maguire and Michael Caine. I second the recommendation of "Wonder Boys".

Loved this one since seeing it opening weekend. Probably saw it at least a few times while it was originally in theaters and plenty of times since. I think the ending pan off Macy and back to Daniels is a perfect ending for the movie. Granted I'm perfectly fine with ambiguous endings in general, but this movie thematically needs one.

+1 for Wonder Boys

OddThomas

For more William H. Macy you should watch Magnolia - also one of the best 90s films

Brian Anthony

Never saw this and really enjoyed it.It kind of took me back to the movie Stay Tuned with John Ritter.I loved that movie as a kid and still do.

OddThomas

Gary Ross directed the first Hunger Games movie; a franchise you should definitely watch if you haven't yet

Florian Meier

Something really cool I noticed on this watch was two song cues during the diner scene when Bud explains books and the outside world to the other teenagers and Bill. When one of them asks Bud "What's outside of Pleasantville?", the jazz song "Take Five" comes up in the background. I thought that was such a clever way to audibly show the movie was gonna "take five" to explain some things to some very curious citizens. I especially love how as everyone looks more intently and fascinated by what Bud is saying, that's about when the song's drum solo comes in. Just so cool! But the next song is the one that really blew me away. When Mary-Sue is explaining the books in the library being filled in the more she remembered about them, Bud ends up filling in a little bit more of Huckleberry Finn as he recalled what Mary-Sue couldn't. When the cheerleader asks "So what happens next?"...the jazz song "So What" starts playing. Like, that one was extra sneaky because that's only one of like four jazz songs I know by name (including T5). Gotta give it up for the music editor because he slayed with that move.

Hi. I also watched this in the theater when it came out because i also had a crush on Reese. Being a bit of history and military history nerd, let me laugh at other things that wasn't widely got on first viewing. Only approx. 10 years before we had Rosie the Riveter and then women were forced back into the homes to be mothers and wives with little real freedom. They were not allowed to divorce without GOOD reasons and couldn't have their own bank accounts. I am actually color blind. 10% of men are. I am Red/Green and Yellow/Green colorblind. I am missing the rods and cones in the back of my eyes to see variations of these colors. Yes, thats 2/3rds of the Color Wheel. Dending on shade, lighting source and other factors i can confuse colors. Although as a middle age man, ive been dealing with this my whole life and can usually guess what its supposed to be. I do remember when i was child having people, "Trying to teach me my colors" and to some extent now people get frustrated or chuckle a bit when i ask what color something is. Some weeks ago at a status board for my job i asked a coworker what color a marker was. I asked, "Is this red or green?" He was a bit shocked and kinda laughed and was like "What?" I replied, "Its not a trick fucking question, what color is this?!" He shook himself a bit and answered. Someone had moved my marker and didnt put it back into the right place for me. It also happens when at the check out when i have to press the red or green key for credit or not and i get back, "Its the Green one." That dosent help me. Uggh. Im sure you can read the frustration. BTW all traffic lights are RYG top to bottom and left to right for people like me. Maybe im wrong but i have an unpopular hypothesis about the Chamber of Commerce symbol. With race relations in the US and how this movie plays out, i see that symbol as a neo fascist symbol reminiscent of some of the worst symbols in history.

Pleasantville was released in 1998, and actually, if you think about some of the other movies that came out around this time, you can actually see the introduction of digital color grading into movies. Another movie that came out in 1998 that featured some of the first, groundbreaking use of digital color grading would be Saving Private Ryan. Nowadays, to see a movie that has a single color tone, which in the case of SPR is browns and grays, you don't even think about it, but back when the film came out, the look was groundbreaking. The same digital color grading techniques, which gave filmmakers unprecedented control over the image, would also be used in O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000), and evolved into stuff like Sin City (2005). Beyond that, I don't know exactly how it was done, I just think it's interesting to see it in historical context along other movies that came out within the same 10-year period. (There is a 33-minute documentary on the DVD and Blu-ray that goes into the visual effects, but I haven't watched it, or it's been years since I have.) The main other thing that I would say would be hugely worth checking out as far as Gary Ross goes (since I haven't seen Seabiscuit, and I think his Hunger Games is actually quite bad) would be Dave (1993), which he wrote, a comedy that reunites director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) with Sigourney Weaver, and stars Kevin Kline. Well worth checking out and I won't say more about what it's about. Will also add my support to everyone who mentioned Wonder Boys (2000). It's kind of funny how many people have reacted to Tropic Thunder but who will never discover that the Satan's Alley trailer is a reunion for RDJ and Tobey.

Just looked at the directors filmography and there is one film on there that is hilarious and no one ever seems to recommend, he only produced it though but it's called Trial and Error, a hilarious 90s courtroom comedy with Jeff Daniels and Michael Richards (Kramer!) It's got a couple other medium names as well. It's a forgotten 90s gem :)

Abel Salas Jr

Hadn't watched this since I saw it in the theater. I had forgotten and it was nice to see sitcom legend Don Knotts (Barny Fife in The Andy Griffith Show and Mr Furley in 3's Company) here as the TV repair man.

Minister Kosh

I know I'm late to the party here, but if you want to see Tobey Maguire in a *very* different role than Spiderman you should definitely watch "Babylon" (2022). The movie is quite dividing and it bombed in theaters when it was released but I think its great (the imdb rating of 7.1 is not too bad either). The cast is absolutely stacked and it was directed by Damien Chazelle.
