The Blair Witch Project (1999) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Shehab Dawoud

You guys are on a roll! As others have said, the real genius of this movie is the way it was marketed. It was marketed as 3 real-life people who had gone missing and their footage turned up. And because the internet wasn’t what it is today, people couldn’t just Google whether it was real or not. So, a lot of people thought it was real. This wasn’t the first found footage film but it’s definitely the one that popularized the genre. I wouldn’t mind a Paranormal Activity reaction if you haven’t already watched it before.

Not teh scariest movie out there, but creates its own unique tension. YOu do want to slap the shit out of the characters once in a while. This was a lot of fun in the theaters with a good crowd

Yes, just enough internet in 1999 to spread the rumors but not enough to be able to verify. Blair Witch and Sixth Sense were two of the most unique cinematic experiences I ever had, back to back. The girl I watched BW with was SO scared…I thought I could capitalize on that but it didn’t work. 😐

I remember watching this in the cinema! Things were so different back then, the internet was a baby, Google was not a thing and people weren’t quite sure if this was real. They had the actors hide out for a bunch of weeks when the movie came out and the lead up and marketing made it sound like a literal found footage presentation. I totally s$_t myself when I saw it… last film to truly scare me outside of 6th sense. They knew how to scare people back then and it was a lot easier to create question because internet searches were beyond whack back then. Finding detailed or correct info on anything was a total nightmare! Good times!

I'm surprised and happy you guys liked it so much. I always thought this was a movie made for the theater. It's a completely different experience in the dark on a huge screen. Found footage movies are everywhere now, but this was a complete innovation at the time. No movie shot on a camcorder was ever in a movie theater pre-Blair Witch. Also this movie was very early internet. No social media, just the movie website and word of mouth rumors about if this was real. There are great stories of the cast not knowing what the hell was going on and the directors staging events to happen to them during the middle of the night without their knowledge.

Lake Mungo is my favourite found footage movie. Highly recommend

Great reaction! Daniel looking away 80 percent of the movie! Hilarious! It's such a SUGGESTED horror movie. Never really showing you anything! And those were Josh's teeth in the cloth. Not ears. :) Side note: Theaters had to display WARNING notices on all their ticket booths stating if you get motion sickness, you might not enjoy the movie. Which pretty much led to more curiosity seekers buying tickets.

The OG of the found footage horror genre. or at least the one that made it a mainstream genre. You thought that was terrifying, try seeing in the theater thinking it was a REAL documentary footage! Mike was the sound guy. Heather operated the handheld color and Josh the black &white camera. It wasn't josh's ear in the bundle of sticks - it was his teeth. there's some nice character development in here - especially with heather and mike. I like how at first Heather is the go-getter out filming everything and Mike is too scared to even come out of the tent. and as things get worse Mike becomes more brave and proactive and heather devolves into a sobbing hysterical mess. Try and find "The Curse of The Blair Witch" it's a 45 minute companion documentary which explains everythings 5 years after they disappeared. you get some backstory... you learn how the footage was found (which is creey initself) etc etc

the sequels are bad. stay away. far away. this movie made a squillion dollars and the actors got like 300k each. they got shafted so hard. Heather quit acting soon after. Mike didn't pursue anything else. Josh has carved out a nice little movie career for himself though.

it's weird cause i get motion sickness so easy in cars and boats. it doesnt take much at all to get me queasy, but the wildly shakey camera work in this movie never bothered me in the slightest

Another great lost-and-found movie is the norwegian "Troll hunter" from 2010 😃😃

Future Boy

This is the film that made me fall in love with found footage, and it's still my favourite subgenre of horror. I'm so happy I got to see you watch it for the first time! I highly, HIGHLY recommend Lake Mungo, by far my favourite found footage horror film. It's not pure found footage like The Blair Witch Project, but it uses elements of found footage incredibly well. I think it's the most haunting film I've ever seen. I feel uneasy for days after every rewatch.

Future Boy

I love Lake Mungo. It's in my top 3 horror films of all time, and probably in my top 10 films in general. A perfect use of found footage, incredibly eerie/sad/haunting, and such an original story that repeatedly swerves in directions you can't see coming. I think Daniel and Sam would love it, but it might take the spinwheel to get it on the schedule!

MacGuffinStuff

Yeah I saw this when we still thought it was actual found footage, recreated, just as advertised lol, so it was just that extra bit more scary, I mean I grew up hearing Mexican ghost stories and witch stories, I think I'm generally a rational and skeptical person. But truth be told, to quote Michael Scott, "I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious." It's just a genius little movie that still holds up in my opinion, but I know it's one there are still a lot of people who hate it. I just respect the guerrilla filmmakers, Myrick and Sanchez, I don't know if either of them did anything else except maybe the sequel, which I don't recall being very good. I rewatch this movie at least once every Halloween and sometimes just because it's such a well made little horror movie that still leaves you haunted, exactly what I love in a good horror flick.

Abby

This is the First time I saw Both of you Honestly Terrified!! 🤣🙏💕

Dan Holmes

I'm so glad Daniel was Stoic throughout the movie, otherwise Sam might have been scared 😅

Michael SCH

I'm just wondering - is Daniel's/Sam's TV brightness (or HDR) set too low.? It's something I noticed them remarking a few times - I remember noticing they couldn't see what was in the coffin in The Omen reaction.

Domino

I love how terrified the two of you were! This was a joy to watch in theaters. Not only was the rumor of it being real found footage huge, but it was such a talked about movie I remember finding half of my extended family in the theater on opening night. I don't rattle easily at all, no movie scares me, but this one really left me a bit shaken and needing a cigarette afterwards. Nobody had seen anything like it, and as other people have said, there was enough internet to have heard the rumors, but not enough to verify. It was great! Fantastic reaction, as always. ❤️

Dan Holmes

I'm glad you guys Got It. Cause most people don't these days. This movie changed horror cinema forever and doesn't always get the credit it deserves. It's incredibly well executed, simple horror. The acting is incredible. I'm guessing the reason it has such a low score on those sites is from modern audiences being bored and not understanding what this film really is. No jump scares, no monster, not a lot of visual terror. Just people, living in fear for their lives. Don't forget almost EVERYONE thought this was 100% real for the first few days or weeks of it's release. I still remember my parents coming home and my mom crying and my dad trying to convince her that it couldn't have been real because there were cast and crew credits at the end. but no one was sure lol Such a masterpiece, and unfortunately an increasingly underrated one. p.s. check out Cloverfield and Chronicle for 2 other favorite found footage films!

I hope you guys check out Book of Shadows Blair Witch 2. I really dont care what other people say about it, personally i really like the 2nd one. I put it on from time to time. Its different but fully embraces the first movie and in a way makes it meta. The reboot from about 10 years ago would've been better as like a horror short film rather than a whole movie.

There was no actual script for the movie. The directors just gave the actors a general idea of what they wanted to happen and left them clues to follow. All the dialogue was improvised by the three leads. Some of the people they interview in Burkittsville (which is a real town) were actors who were given pieces of lore to tell them but they also spent time just interviewing strangers on the street to see how they would respond when asked "Have you ever heard of the Blair Witch?".

Ricardo Alanis

I watched this in the theaters a few times. It was such a phenomenon with great marketing. The director’s commentary on the DVD is really interesting and actually very humorous with a lot of anecdotes of how it all was made. And while the direct sequel (Book of Shadows) wasn’t good, the more recent “Blair Witch” I thought was very well done and built on the lore. Glad you enjoyed it!

Ricardo Alanis

I think Paranormal Activity was the next movie that gave me similar vibes.

DM DC

This was a fun reaction. I wasn't a fan of this film initially, but it grew on me. My hot take is that I did like the sequel more than the first one. From what I've heard and read there was a lot of studio interference during the production of the 2nd film. But I still liked it a lot. It's more Hollywood production type film with some found footage mixed in. guess you could say combination, but it is more a regular style film than found footage. I think it's worth a watch, but it wasn't that well received by most people.

Tyler Foster

I constantly wonder what reactors' calibration looks like to them.

Michael Bauer

After watching *Paranormal Activity*, I could only sleep during the day for the next three days, and I kept the lights on all over the apartment at night. And ever since then, I only sleep with the duvet tucked in tight. Horror triggered by the simplest things.

penoyer79

Paranormal Activity operates very much under the same principles as Blair Witch... they just moved it in doors and let the camera sit still. Both films are the crown jewels of found footage.

penoyer79

There's some notorious behind the scenes Pulp Fiction stuff with Tarantino filming Bruce Willis with a cheap little handheld camera and Bruce looks into the camera and says something to the effect of "You know, one day 5 years from now, some 17-year-old kid is going to make a killer, drop-dead, poorly lit video feature film with one of those for like $60,000 and it'll become the hippest thing ever and spawn hundreds of copy-cat films." Exactly five years later, directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez released The Blair Witch Project in 1999. The horror movie was shot entirely on handheld camcorders, cost approximately $60,000 to make, and launched the entire modern found-footage horror phenomenon.

Fear of the unknown is such a bitch, ain't it? 🤣 Incredible movie and amazing reaction. You guys were scared Schmittless. LOL
