Help pick the Rom-Com movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: Daniel has seen Pretty Woman & Amelie, so this would only be Sam's first time reaction. Sam has seen About Time, so this would only be my first time reaction.

*We haven't seen these films unless noted above. If you disagree with the genre, you'll have to take it up with Google ;)

Comments

Philip Davetas

I went with BRIDGET JONES. I don't know know if ROMANCING THE STONE is a rom-com though. It's more like Indiana Jones lite.but it is a fun movie. I wouldn't mind if you guys did that.

Erwin Quiachon

I'd also recommend "The Mirror Has Two Faces", (1996), "Splash" (1984), and "The Apartment" (1960) for classic romcoms.

mikethemotormouth

Disappointed to not find Better Off Dead(1985) or Grumpy Old Men(1993) Suppose Amélie will do

Tim Raths

If you haven’t seen any Audrey Hepburn films Roman Holiday is the perfect introduction.

MikeLL

Yes to The Apartment, and if you want to go further back, as I am wont to do, It Happened One Night (1934) one of only 3 movies to win all 5 top line Oscars (Picture, Actor, Actress Director, Screenplay; the other two movies being the already seen on this channel The Silence of the Lambs and One Flew Over the Cockoo's Nest, seeing It Happened would complete the trifecta) and The Quiet Man (1952) with John Wayne. Full disclosure: I voted for Roman Holiday the only Golden Era movie on this list, the list needed more.

Florian Meier

Please "Romancing The Stone" !!! MICHAEL Douglas !!!!

MikeLL

ROMANCING: does it have romance? Yes, does it have comedy? Yes, does it have adventure? Yes, but either way we pigenhole it, we still have to take it up with Google! 😂 Full disclosure, I voted for it.

Erwin Quiachon

Oh, Jesus! Yes! The Quite Man! That's definitely a must see classic romcom.

Philip Davetas

I have no problem with it if it won. I love that movie.

Tristan Durant

Hitch, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Crazy Rich Asians, The Big Sick, Somebody I Use to Know, Silver Linings Playbook, Love and Other Drugs, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Something’s Gotta Give, Pretty in Pink, Don Jon. Also check out Netflix for the Rom-Coms: Love Hard, The Out-Laws, Always Be My Maybe, The Perfect Date, The Lovebirds, Set It Up.

Tostito Buddy

Ah, rom coms. The only poll I wish had a "None of the above" option. Do you guys have any skills, couldn't Dan juggle while Sam reads poetry or something? I'd watch.

Shehab Dawoud

One of my least favorite genres but one that I love is As Good As It Gets. One of Nicholson's finest performances which saw him win his 3rd Oscar.

William 1611

"Roman Holiday" for the win, because of Gregory Peck and the impossibly gorgeous Audrey Hepburn. "Amelie" was a cute movie. But please, guys, I implore you: someday, you've gotta do "Into the Night" (1985), starring Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer, with David Bowie, Dan Aykroyd, and cameos by some of the most famous directors of the time, including Jon Landis, who directed the film. It's wonderful!

Reed James

Romancing the Stone is a great couples romcom. It has romance and action in it.

Future Boy

If Romancing the Stone wins, I think it would make a great double reaction to also watch The War of the Roses (1989). It's the same cast: Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito (it's also directed by DeVito). But instead of being a romantic comedy, it's more like an ANTI-romantic comedy. Very dark, very funny, and would make for a great reaction.

m

"Suppose Amélie will do" If that isn't the understatement of the century

YoureMrLebowski

i wonder how often None of the Above would get a vote on the polls. every so often there's a poll with nothing that excites me.

Robert Boyd

Great list. Wow, Sam, you’ve never seen Pretty Woman? I was expecting Daniel to have not seen it. That movie made Julia Roberts a huge star. She became so popular, the Kardashians are still envious of all the attention she got 😆. Roman Holiday is great too and that made Audrey Hepburn a big star as well. Hoping though Romancing The Stone wins. Truly great and Kathleen Turner is an amazing actor.

Florian Meier

Totally Seconded!!! What a Film to react !!!

Florian Meier

Second for that !!! What a Performance from Nicholson !!!

Duncan

""""""""Serendipity (2001)" """"""on the next rom com poll please amazingly fun and exciting movie with a great cast in Kate Beckinsale/John Cusack/Jeremy Piven/Eugene Levy thank you thank you thank you

David Martin

OK, this is REALLY unfair, trying to choose between these movies. You do realize you're going to eventually react to half of these, right?

Duncan

Also if you need any Christmas content "The Family Man (2000)" is one of the best festive rom coms and a really great movie ,staring Nicolas Cage/Téa Leoni/Don Cheadle cheers

David Martin

I just watched Romancing the Stone again, and while it's right up there on the Romance side, it's not as good as When Harry Met Sally on the comedy side. Which to choose?

David Martin

Definitely the best choice here, but sadly lagging behind, probably because it's old and in B&W. Thankfully, they're not slaves to their polls like some reactors.

John W Foster

if you like Romancing the Stone, you might also check out the Lost City (2022) which has a similar vibe and stars Channing Tatum, Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliff, and includes a slightly-more-than-a-camdeo by Brad Pitt.

JG

You should’ve added “Enough Said” (2013) to this poll. Stars Julia Louis Dreyfus and James Gandolfini (in his last role). I’m not really a rom-com fan, but this one exceeded my expectations. Didn’t follow the predictable storyline that most rom-coms typically share (which is why I’m not a fan). Plus, it was great seeing James Gandolfini one last time in a role that he has never done before! Hope you add it to the next poll!

Tyler Foster

Pulling for When Harry Met Sally, the Casablanca of rom-coms. I will also add for future polls: Moonstruck (1987), starring Cher and Nicolas Cage.

Tyler Foster

Yes! Enough Said is wonderful. So funny. A couple other suggestions: he did an incredible political comedy called In the Loop with Armando Iannucci, best known in America as the creator of "Veep," and he also did a movie with "Sopranos" creator David Chase, called Not Fade Away.

Domino

Oh where is As Good as It Gets (1997)? I could have sworn that movie was somewhere in a poll at some point. Highly recommended. This is a great list though! :D

Samolina Pilchard

Arthur (1981) with Dudley Moore. NOT the remake!

EdmanXERO

Probably won't win, but Clueless is a classic for me. lol We'll see how this goes!

Smooticus

is Romancing the Stone a rom com, or adventure movie? I guess it can be both

Paul Cox

Of the three big Nora Ephron films, I love Sleepless the most. WHMS is good, but I can handle only so much Billy Crystal. And then You've Got Mail is just practically a beat for beat rehash of Sleepless—no fun. I imagine WHMS will come out on top there, though. It always does.

Tim Raths

I was originally going to vote for that one but then I saw Roman Holiday on the poll and voted that one instead. I watched Clueless not long ago. It came out when I was 14 years old and it’s aged quite well.

ShadowVessel π

Romancing the Stone is awesome. Have either of you seen America's Sweethearts? It has John Cusack, Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts, Christopher Walken, Catherine Zeta Jones, and more. Friggin hi-larious🤣

Vwlss Nvwls

These are all good, and I am realizing that I saw most of them before I was in my 30s.

Tyler Foster

It's gonna kill me a little if WHMS comes in second place behind a movie that would've been perfect for the adventure poll... ;)

Future Boy

When Harry Met Sally is still the only romcom that I truly love. I think it has the best comedy dialogue of all time.

Korny

LA Story is one of my favorite movies. It’s so great!

Birdie Num Num

+1 for The Apartment. It's a shame your patrons aren't crazy about Billy Wilder, he never does well in polls.

Brandon B.

Dang. I was really hoping Amélie would win. It's such a weird, fantastic movie.

Future Boy

Stakeout, one of my all-time favourites. Great cast, great fun, and what a mix of genres: buddy cop, comedy, romance, action, crime...I wore my VHS tape out when I was a kid!

Miles E Coburn

Damn. Somehow I mistakenly deleted my comment. I think I remembered them all. “The Goodbye Girl” (1977) – Marsha Mason, Richard Dreyfuss “Her Alibi” (1989) – Tom Selleck, Paulina Porizkova More like a Rom-Farce “L.A. Story” (1991) – Steve Martin, Victoria Tennant “One Fine Day” (1996) – George Clooney, Michelle Pfeiffer “Roxanne” (1987) – Steve Martin, Daryl Hannah Re-telling of “Cyrano De Bergerac” “While You Were Sleeping” (1995) – Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman “Must Love Dogs” (2005) – John Cusack, Diane Lane (sigh!) On-line dating comedy “Night Shift” (1982) – Henry Winkler (the “Fonz”), Michael Keaton, Shelley Long “Enchanted” (2007) – Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey “Murphy’s Romance” (1985) – James Garner, Sally Field “Stakeout” (1987) – Richard Dreyfuss, Madeleine Stowe, Emilio Estevez

Paul Cox

Agree. Billy Wilder made some stunning films.

Dan McComb

They will love "While You Were Sleeping", the Christmas movie that people never mention as a Christmas movie.

Lamar Savage

Please do yourselves a favor and watch "Return To Me" (2000)

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Hi Guys, here are a few film suggestions you may not have heard of :- the 1944 (The Miracle Of Morgan`s Creek) starring Eddie Bracken & Betty Hutton, the 1958 (Houseboat) starring Cary Grant & Sophia Loren, Cary Grant`s last film 1966 (Walk, Don`t Run), the 1972 (What`s Up, Doc ?) starring Barbra Streisand & Ryan O`Neal, the 1986 (Something Wild) starring Melanie Griffith & Jeff Daniels, the 2001 (Kate & Leopold) starring Meg Ryan & Hugh Jackman. I have watched them all & they are well worth reacting to, IMO.

Miles E Coburn

I was going to mention "Houseboat" (1958) and "Kate & Leopold" (2001) but thought they might be too esoteric. "Houseboat" wasn't Cary Grant's last movie. He had 7 films released after that; "Charade" (1963), "North by Northwest" (1959), and "Father Goose" (1964) being my favorites.

Ken Veader

Overboard (1987) should be on here, one of the best romcoms of all time and one of the few I can tolerate

Future Boy

Stakeout! One of my favourites from the 80s. Great cast, great fun, and a great mix of genres: comedy, crime, romance, action, buddy cop.

Julie O

Yeah. Definitely one of the sweetest films out there

Hunter DeRensis

It Happened One Night (1934) is the original rom-com, and is still ranked as one of the greatest films of all time. It hasn't aged a day and is one of only three movies to ever win all top five Academy Awards. It's a must watch.

oldcdog

Damn, aside from Roman Holiday, which I’m just not familiar with, these are all worth a watch.

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Hi Miles, no, I said, the 1966 (Walk, Don`t Run) was his last movie. I agree with your last sentence, they are good films. But, I left out (Charade) & (Father Goose) only as they did not fit the genre mentioned. I also like the 1949 (I was a Male War Bride) but I left it out as I had mentioned it previously. I agree with several of your choices, but I have not seen all of those mentioned in your list.

Paul Cox

Definitely worth a watch, since it's obviously not going to win here. Audrey Hepburn's very first role, and she won the Best Actress Oscar for it right out of the gate.

David Martin

Roman Holiday is definitely worth a watch, many times. Audrey Hepburn's debut, and she won an Academy Award for her portrayal.

Neal Romanek

I really want you to see Roman Holiday - one of the greatest romantic comedies ever, with Audrey Hepburn so magnetic and gorgeous, it makes your eyes water. But the no-brainer win on this list is When Harry Met Sally. And you need to see the Billy Wilder romantic comedies - The Apartment and Some Like It Hot.

Rudy Hernandez

Perfect Rom-Com: Overboard, or Can’t Buy Me Love

YoureMrLebowski

wow, my picks are winning! that never happens! oh happy day... 😎

Jim Johnson

Gotta do the Before Trilogy sometime. Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013). They’re the best romance movies and the time between releases is the same amount of time that elapses for the characters. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are amazing and they have to carry the whole series as the movies are, more or less, just them talking to each other.

Jango Jenkins

It's never mentioned, but I really liked Love and Other Drugs. And also Shallow Hal!
