Ugh.. these episodes are so uncomfortable. With our progress, our memories, our strenghts, we have no sense of security left, no real slice of life, just paranoia. I love and hate that at the same time.

One of those gluttony guys could be involved. Acts and talks just like it. And there seems to be a focus on memories, like Gluttonbaru saying he'll remember it for Meili. Also he needs to die already. How else can Meili join his harem like almost all of the other girls in this anime?

Subaru was also the only guy who even remembers Julius and Rem. And heck, Rem is in sort of a coma, so now no one remembers her.

But what's really strange is that book of the dead, it should tell Meilis life. Including the encounters with the Subaru we know.. when he was kind although they were enemies, when he made her plushies etc

At this point, one episode away from Hitting Bottom, and considering how many books Subaru had around him in Meili's flashback... we can safely say that Subaru saw so many dead people's memories his brain Blue-Screened, and he restarted in safe mode... but downloaded the wrong OS. And the result, as Meili's ghost is showing us, is a Factory Settings Subaru with bits and pieces of all the personalities of the dead he read about. Which is way worse, since in the novel, one of the books he read was the memories of Minerva, the Witch of Wrath. So, if you want to see what sort of Mr. Hyde's amalgam is lurking inside his brain, make a list of all the dead he knows that perished up until he reached that point. There's Elsa, Petelgeuse, the original Ryuzu Meyer, Regulus, the Witches of Sin (minus Satella, who is sealed alive somewhere close to that Tower), Wilhelm's wife, OG Reid... Nearly every one of those stiffs was nuts in one way or another, and now he has Meili with her "quality home life" to keep him company. Quite frankly, it's a miracle there is a Subaru in there.

Not to worry its gets worse after getting better over the next few arcs. I love this series for its odd as hell character journeys.

Seriously try imagining reading this part of the arc... like 7 times repeated just trying to make the words make sense. Well the anime upgrades the clarity to Mud; at least thats an improvement. Literally required the LN to spell it out for me for me to make sense of this.
