Exploring ATM networking with a 3Com CELLPlex 7000 and CoreBuilder 7000. We'll try to get some Windows XP machines hooked up to these things with some Fore Systems ATM PCI cards.EDIT: Luke has pointed out that Windows itself was assigning those IP addresses via APIPA. I had turned off Windows firewall on the ThinkCentre in the past, which was why the laptop could ping it, so basically I had a fully functional LAN the whole time 🤦‍♂️I know this one is very early but I'm out of town this weekend and figured I might as well get it posted!EDIT2: Video is live.

ATM Networking

Exploring ATM networking with some huge 3Com CELLPlex and CoreBuilder 7000 enterprise switches. We'll fire these things up, see if we can create an ATM network with some Windows XP machines via some Fore Systems ATM PCI cards, and learn a little bit about ATM networking. The IP adresses are self assigned by Win XP. Try assigning static adresses on both interfaces.

clabretro

yeah and they're on the same subnet 🤦‍♂️

I really like the video and the fun that you're having. My wife both likes it that YOU are messing with this stuff but dislikes that I want to mess with things like it too.

Seeing your cats is definitely worth the Patreon subscription! :> I hope New Cat (to whom we have not been properly introduced) is getting along a little better with Nicki these days.

clabretro

things are getting much better! new cat is Khloe and she's a sweetheart, thinks Nicki is the coolest thing she's ever seen. Nicki is not sold yet 😆

The IP Addresses that you are getting are "link local" addresses. 169.254.0.0/16 - This is the "link local" block. As described in [RFC3927], it is allocated for communication between hosts on a single link. Hosts obtain these addresses by auto-configuration, such as when a DHCP server cannot be found. I hope that helps.

Was I the only one shouting at the screen for: - The link-local IP addresses are not assigned by any DHCP server - They are on the same /16 subnet - The Dell laptop has the Windows firewall on (it says it in the network control panel), which is probably the reason why you cannot ping it, but you can ping the other way around

Ctrl-? can also work, that and Ctrl-H are the two main control characters for the delete character. This is also why you sometimes see the joke that someone would literally type hi^H^H meaning they meant to type hi, but then erased it.

clabretro

yeah figured that out later, you definitely weren't the only person shouting haha

clabretro

yeah finally realized that! I'll do a follow up
