Somewhere outside of the Dimensional Grid
The Quantum Vanguard turns his gaze away from the corrupted creatures he’s currently slaughtering to look at the sensation he feels. That of the trial copying his past self and placing it within the trial tower. But after seeing the Quantum Reaper watch his own past self fight corruption for a few minutes, he returns his full focus onto the corruption he is currently facing.
It looks like the time has arrived.
When the Vanguard first heard of the Quantum Reaper, he was excited. Because it meant there was another Quantum Being who was combat focused, so he could have fun fighting her in sparring matches.
Then he heard about the trials granting her immense resistances towards the other Quantum Beings’ energies. But even then he wasn’t too worried.
It wasn’t until he saw her being given the responsibility to hunt down and reap the life of a Quantum Being that he began to feel she was a genuine threat. Both to him and to the other Quantum Beings.
Even to the balance of the universe itself.
He decided then and there that he would fight and kill her after he dealt with the corruption. Since the corruption is still a far greater threat than a single Quantum Being.
Only for his plan to change again when he saw the Quantum Enforcer go after her instead. With him losing to her after the Quantum Architect helped her clear the trial without the Quantum Enforcer interfering.
When he saw her battle and victory over the Quantum Enforcer, he realized that it would be impossible for him to deal with the Quantum Reaper. Not after the corruption is dealt with, at least.
She would have long since cleared his trial by then. And once she clears his trial, there is no way for him to beat her.
The Quantum Reaper will already know how to fight him, and will have a massive resistance towards his energy.
But the biggest reason he changed his mind about her is because of the Corrupted One.
The highest chance of them defeating the Corrupted One without the aid of the Quantum Ruler is for the Quantum Reaper to finish all of her trials, complete her True Form, and help slay the Corrupted One for them.
The Quantum Vanguard lets out a sigh while slaughtering the corrupted creatures. Deciding to just hope that the Quantum Reaper doesn’t ever decide to go on a hunt killing all of the other Quantum Beings. And that she never turns into a corrupted creature herself, like the Corrupted One.
Then he simply begins ignoring the trial attempt to focus on what he’s doing.
Alexia
It doesn’t take long for me to learn through first hand experience in my first attempt at the third part of the trial the biggest differences between the Quantum Vanguard and the other Quantum Beings.
If I had to describe the powers of the other Quantum Beings, I’d say they warp, alter, create, and redirect reality around them. Whether it’s the Quantum Architect designing the structure of the universe, the Quantum Balancer redirecting people and energy in the universe, or the Quantum Creator and Builder building the living and non-living things in the universe. Even the Quantum Enforcer altered the universe through its time.
Not to mention the teleportation and time reversal magic the Quantum Beings used to recover and teleport all over the place, which warped reality.
Every single Quantum Being did one of those to reality around them.
But the Quantum Vanguard? He’s different.
Very different.
The Quantum Vanguard breaks and shatters reality. He can’t heal himself, can’t teleport, and can’t alter reality around him.
All he can do is slice reality. His sword, coated in his quantum energy, directly cuts through reality. It rips it apart.
Along with everything in it.
So, while the others fight in a roundabout way like warping reality to move them from one place to another, or creating creatures to fight for them, the Quantum Vanguard is made to fight directly. To destroy the corrupted creatures.
Which means he is a lot harder and a lot easier to fight.
He doesn’t teleport or do any underhanded or tricky attacks, but he is far faster and stronger than the other Quantum Beings. And thanks to that, I end up being sliced to pieces within minutes.
That’s not all, though. Because his ‘tearing apart reality’ also tears apart the concept of time and space. Which makes it so I can’t reverse time to restore my body.
The only thing I can do to recover is to empower my body with more and more soul and energy to regenerate faster.
But that has its limits.
I can’t help but frown as I watch the first and second part of the trial again. Which pretty much comes down to me studying the Quantum Vanguard’s fighting style.
He always uses a sword coated in quantum energy, and I’ve never seen him fight unarmed. Even the times he loses his sword – which only happened when he fought against over ten Corruptors at a single time, and just for a few moments – he just manifested a new sword out of quantum energy.
I continue to watch him fight all the way until the third part of the trial arrives again. At which point I rush backwards while swinging my scythe in front of me. Leaving my blade clashing with and parrying his sword. Albeit with difficulty.
The Vanguard looks surprised for a moment before grinning at me like a battle maniac who just found a good sparring partner.
Just like the first time I attempted his trial.
And he clearly seems to be enjoying our fight more and more every time I manage to parry his blade.
But I don’t have much experience fighting like this. Fighting blade against blade.
Most of my battles have all been against monsters, or people who don’t really use weapons much. Like the other Quantum Beings.
So it doesn’t take long before I lose again and am sent back to the first part of the trial.
This is going to be difficult.
