At the base of the Eternal TowerYear 2853 | Month 6 | Day 13

“Minister, the Tower Master is ready to see you now,” Minister Regard hears not long after seeing the foreign delegation from his country’s neighbor, Renan, leave the Eternal Tower’s main audience hall. And he doesn’t waste any time as he rushes to his feet and moves to enter the hall with the rest of his own delegation behind him.

He isn’t allowed to screw this up. It’s not an outcome that can happen for him.

Not if he wants his country to have any chance of advancing.

Unlike his country’s neighbor, his own country of Relalle has already been written off by the Alliance as a country not worth protecting. Leaving them with just the bare minimum protection that only stops other countries from completely annexing them.

And even that protection will likely disappear if Renan or Relalle’s other neighbors decide to officially declare war.

Regard takes a deep breath once he arrives at the large double doors before stepping through when they open on their own. Revealing a grand hall on the other side of the doors.

The hall has numerous balconies running throughout it all the way to the end, where Regard sees a large throne on a raised dais with even more balconies behind it. Meanwhile there are several magicians standing near the throne holding tablets and documents.

And yet, there isn’t a single soldier in the hall. Which is very different from any reception room Regard has seen before.

Not a single bodyguard.

It doesn’t take long for Regard to look past this, though, as the Undying Magician doesn’t need any bodyguards.

I wouldn’t need any either if I was immortal…

Regard slowly walks across the hall until he arrives at the base of the dais, where he finds himself looking up at the Undying Magician on the throne. A man who currently looks bored. So much so that he isn’t even hiding it.

The minister doesn’t feel very surprised by the sight. It’s common for magicians to have little interest in politics, so he came prepared for this.

“We greet the Undying Magician and wish to ask for an audience,” Minister Regard declares while giving a magician’s salute by crossing one arm over his chest with his fist clenched. Using the correct form of greeting for a Tower Master and a Class S magician.

The Undying Magician just stares at them as his faintly glowing crimson eyes remain completely unblinking, sending a chill down Regard’s spine. But he doesn’t let it get to him.

“State your intentions,” the woman standing next to the Undying Magician, Claire Taylor, declares without batting an eye.

Regard doesn’t waste any time as he declares, “The kingdom of Relalle wishes to establish diplomatic relations with the Eternal Continents, with the intentions of trade development agreements being established between our two nations.”

The woman reads over something on the tablet in her hands before stating, “It would appear your nation mines as its main source of export.” She looks up at the minister. “Does that mean you plan to trade the minerals obtained from your volcanic regions to the Eternal Continents? And if so, what do you request in return?”

After taking a breath to calm down when he sees the Undying Magician’s eyes flare slightly with crimson light, Regard answers, “All we request is that the Undying Magician makes an appearance at our king’s birthday banquet to be held in two weeks. Should this request be fulfilled, we will send several different minerals and ores to the Eternal Continents on a monthly basis.”

Silence fills the hall for several seconds before the second in command of the tower asks, “And how much will you be sending?”

Regard feels a brief flash of hesitation when it comes to the exact amount, but he pushes past it since he has to make this deal go through. There isn’t any other option for him.

“We will supply you with ten thousand tons of metal every month for three years’ time,” Regard answers after just a single second of pause. “All we request is for you to publicly attend our King’s birthday banquet.”

Regard sees the second in command of the Eternal Tower glance at the Undying Magician, only for the man himself to answer, “Accepted.”

A slight chill runs down his spine at the man’s voice, which is colder than expected, before he feels joy at having succeeded in his goal. After that, he just goes through the usual closing and begins to leave the hall.

And not much later, he sees a different delegation moving towards the hall doors.

One that sends alarm bells ringing throughout Regard’s mind.

Because this delegation belongs to another of the nations that might declare war on his at any time.

It was already bad enough that Renan was here, but now Tregalle as well?!

He grits his teeth at the sight of them. Especially when he sees the delegate grin at him with a smug grin. Only for that grin to vanish just as quickly as it had appeared.

Regard takes another deep breath before letting it out and continuing down the Eternal Tower with the rest of his delegation. Deciding that he’s already made preparations for his country’s survival.

If His Majesty can negotiate an official agreement with the Undying Magician during his birthday banquet, then our country might just be saved.

Even the Undying Magician’s mere presence at their banquet might make some of their neighbors back off even the slightest bit. Or at least think twice about attacking them out of worry about their potential relationship with the Eternal Tower.

No matter what happens now, I’ve finished my part.

This thought makes relief flood Regard’s body. So much so that he wants to just go to his room and lie down right now.

Unfortunately, he isn’t able to do that at this moment.

He sighs at that thought before continuing to make his way down the tower.

I hope His Majesty manages to make use of this final hope…
