At the very beginning of my nude photography journey, I photographed naked bodies with flowers a lot. I couldn’t get enough of it, visually or metaphorically. It felt endlessly beautiful to me. Over time, it started to feel a bit overdone, mostly because I had shot it too much and didn’t want to repeat myself.

Now I occasionally return to flowers again, to look for new combinations, new compositions, or sometimes simply to enjoy that magical pairing once more.

And that’s when a question came up in my head.

If a flower is a metaphor for a woman, then what is the metaphor for a man? What element, combined with the male body, creates the same strong symbolic image in a frame? Stone? Wood? Steel?

And then I caught myself thinking that maybe this question already sounds outdated. Maybe people are already completely fine with flowers and male bodies together. Maybe this metaphor no longer needs to be gendered at all. Maybe everyone has already moved on, and I’m still standing here, thinking in old categories, trying to decode something that is already obvious to others.

So this isn’t really a question with an answer yet.

It’s just me noticing where my own thinking still lags behind my intuition, and wondering whether this hesitation lives in the world around me… or only in my head.

It seems to me that the current rush to “de-gender” everything is quite a shocking and ill founded attempt to go against the polarity that propagates nearly all reproductive life (including humans) on earth. The idea that choosing a different element or metaphor for “man” and “woman” is somehow wrong is a sad and boring place to find ourselves. Where is the poetry? Where is the friction created by different polarities coming together? Forcing us all into the same metaphor removes mystery, desire, longing and fundamentally misunderstands the vast differences between men and women. Celebrating our differences, while still seeing and deeply knowing that all humans hold equal value, is the true heart of what it means to be in balance. Not all women are flowers, and not all men are wood/steel, and nobody is the same simple metaphor all the time. We are complex and ever changing. But that doesn’t mean these metaphors aren’t rich with thought and feeling-provoking substance. The idea that such a subjective metaphor would, for instance, offend someone, is just a sign of how wounded and fragile some (many) people have become. Having said all that, I like wood for men. More than wood, trees. I like trees because they are living wood, and there are so many species. Like flowers. So maybe not all men are the same type of tree, but men as a group could be likened to trees as a group. Some are soft and flexible like pine, some are tough and broad like oak, and then there’s everything in between. Trees often become stronger when they grow in difficult and windy environments because the adversity of their surroundings makes them so. This too is true of men. The gift of this mind is to see beyond the obvious and to laterally connect dots inside our intuition. I pray we never allow anything to take such a beautiful facet of our life away from us.
