Esperanza returned from holidays this week and she has resumed the work on Taito’s Extermination hardware. This was pretty much done before her holidays but as usual, small details take a long time to get done. She has been cleaning up the schematics and will be running electrical rule checks next week. The core for these Taito boards is quite advanced too, with the CPU and sound chips connected and operational. The graphics hardware is still not implemented.

Work on the NeoGeo Pocket CPU continued one more week getting closer to full test coverage. See the attached report for the week progress. Miss case summary:

-Line coverage: from 15 misses to 12

-Toggle coverage: from 213 misses to 166

-Logic coverage: from 390 misses to 181

-Memory coverage: from 128 misses to 112

While working on Out Run I caused a regression error in the System 16 core. The tilemap chip is the same in Outrun and System 16 but I needed to produce some chip outputs for Out Run that I wasn’t using before. While doing that I broke the layer priority system. The layers in SEGA System 16 consisted in four different graphics: two backgrounds, objects (sprites) and a text layer, which was called the fixedlayer. The objects could be set to appear in front of any of the layers. Up to that point, the hardware is typical. But System 16 has a peculiar mode in which a sprite can be used to cast a shadow on the background layer. This is accomplished by reducing the brightness of all the pixels that fall behind the sprites but without drawing the sprite itself. It was that mechanism that I broke by mistake while working in Outrun. It is now fixed again and the files are updated in JTBIN. Run update_all or grab the files manually for non-MiSTer devices.

As you know there was an update for the Pocket on Tuesday. You may have noticed a number in small print when you press the Analogue button. That is your chip ID and it is unique for each device. Although the JTGNG core works on any Pocket, my plan is to compile the cores to work only on patron’s Pocket devices. Why? Because I want to hire a second engineer to speed up development. See how long the coverage analysis on the NeoGeo Pocket is taking… Another reason is that the Pocket has proven to be hard to design for and it requires a lot of testing. I know people don’t like having a file locked to a device. Neither, do I. We may release free compilations with time but in the short/midterm, closed compilations pay for development and we all need the development.

What do you need to do? Just load the JTGNG core and press the Analogue button. Write down the hexadecimal string in small print at the bottom of the screen and send it to pocketid@jotego.es. You need to include your Patreon user name or the e-mail you used to register in Patreon.

That’s all for this week. We will have a new core next Friday. See you then!

A mítampoco.

I don't see anything at the bottom of my screen after pressing the analogue button. When I go into core settings there is a version number, could that be it?

Tommy McLeroy

I strongly disagree with this decision to lock cores to patreon supporter's pockets. I'll be unsubscribing from your patreon.

16Bit SPY

Yeah, it was strange to see all the Pocket fans posting online about their new cores, but not knowing where it came from, figured hardly any where paying Patreon members. I would not mind knowing where we stand with MiSTer Patreon members V Pocket Patreon members, curious to see how the support is spread. Thanks for all your 'MiSTer work', the MiSTer is special because of your hard work and the Patriots who are loyal to you, so that you can dedicate yourself to our MiSTer platform. PS: Has Analogue offered to support you financially for making their system stand out? If they are not, then they certainly should be.

Jose Luis Sánchez

I am so happy that forward development is being done for AP. I am in!

Phil Stevenson

The sprite shadow drawing method is interesting. I eagerly await Outrun! To those upset about having to register their Analogue Pocket, please consider this: the vast majority of JT's patreons are MiSTer owners. MiSTer is not a commercial product sold by a parent company, so it would be unreasonable to expect to be paid by the project leaders to support it. This is not the case with Analogue, and JT's work WILL boost sales for their product. Since he's helping their business yet they won't help him, how should he fund the development work? Remember he has employees now! And he never said that the work will forever be locked to only Patreon subscribers. MiSTer owners who don't subscribe here still eventually get the benefits of his work as will AP owners.

Brendan Eddy

I'm fine with the Pocket cores being limited, so long as it doesn't stay that way forever. One question though, what about patrons who have two Pockets? Can we add/update our supported devices through that email at any time?

Sylver

I’d love to send my analogue pocket info but I’ll get mine maybe during next year (their info are very unprecise). Hopefully I have my misterfpga to enjoy your work !

Mike V.

Even when some may get upset about the "DRM" on the AP, I think it is a better idea to get a second developer solely for it and leave all other resources and time to develop just for MiSTer and Mist, etc. Specially if Analogue seems not to be willing to provide any solid and constant economic support. This situation seems too comfy for them and like they hope things will sort out on their favor... You know what they say: "Al que quiera azul celeste, que le cueste". And maybe you can release the cores for free once a year has gone by or something like that. But for sure, I think a lot of patrons would appreciate if there´s a solid confirmation that this DMR is a temporary situation.

Paul Fisher

First, thank you for all your work, especially on the MiSTer. I have no problem supporting devs and no issue with exclusive to supporter pre release availability... But I think it'd be a good idea to clarify whether or not these will eventually *not* be paywalled. "May" does not work. I cannot support that, and will cancel my support until this is ironed out. I ask anyone else who feels uneasy about this situation to do the same and voice your concerns. This completely goes against the spirit of the FPGA gaming community. Yes, you should get paid for your work, but in all honesty, the underlying systems themselves are not your intellectual property and this is riding a fine line.

David Sims

As a Pocket patron I can't say this sits well with me. I'm more than happy to contribute with the understanding that everyone will eventually get these cores, but I am also not sure if I will stick around if these will remain locked. If this is temporary, it still doesn't quite sit right with me due to the precedent being set, but with a clearly communicated timetable of when these would be unlocked for all I could make my peace with it. I would be surprised if there are as many Pockets out there in the wild as there are MiSTers. It's a new product releasing during a time when chip shortages have yet to abate from a small, boutique company. They've really only had one shipment, with one quick follow-up for people who had cancelled in the first shipping batch; there are almost certainly more people waiting for their Pocket than have received one by now. In turn, if this means there are not as many Pocket patrons as you would need/like to justify core development, then perhaps it's better to not develop for the Pocket until there are more out there rather than resort to DRM-like methods. Personally, I'd be more likely to keep contributing under those circumstances than one where DRM is utilized (hopefully not permanently! "We may release free compilations with time" in the original post leaves that possibility open for at least some cores).

SegaSnatcher

I'm happy to continue supporting your work and am extremely appreciative that you are supporting Pocket, but I really wished a different approach could be taken. Is there nothing that can be done to just making a Beta Key by doing something fancy with JSON files? Maybe a special JSON file we'd have to download to open up controls for the core. Just putting that out there. Just a strange feeling for me to send any unique I.D. stuff even if it's safe.

Mark Saunders

I keep an eye on git hub i saw the Golden Axe character portraits corruption and reported it. you do so much work jose and team, absolutely first class.

Dereck

as others have said i obviously don't mind supporting devs, but this seems to be changing into a subscription service to play games that you don't even own the rights to. how long until you lock specific cores behind higher priced tiers?

Alistair

I haven’t received my pocket yet (Q4 22) but I started supporting ahead of time so I could access cores early the moment my unit arrives. My understanding under this system is that cores will be inaccessible to me until not only I provide my device ID but a new build is released. Not really a fan.

Bryan Adams

Thanks as always for the hard work on preservation and open communication about what is going on. While temporarily gating pocket support to supporters isn’t ideal, I can’t think of a better way to fairly encourage support of a commercial platform that is a small portion of users. I also appreciate that the cores themselves are still open and available as always, just the built releases are hwid locked, which makes this much more palatable for me. I don’t plan on going anywhere in the meantime and look forward to eventually playing releases on my pocket whenever Analogue actually gets around to producing mine next year. It looks like I’ll just have to play public and beta (with jtbeta.zip key) cores on MiSTer until then.

80's spaceman

As a MiSter only patron I support this. 90% if not more of your current base is MiSTer and if Pocket is taking away a lot of dev time I think its best to hire an extra person and let the Pocket community pay for it.

Thorias

Hello JT, I don't know the hips regarding on developing on the Analog Pocket...Is there a large users base compared to Mister, Mist, etc...? Is Analog Pocket supporting you on developing financialy on their kind of close source products? If not, what's the point to "indirectly support/promote them and ask your patreons to support for such"? Watch out on the direction you're taking on this, you may loose a lot of patreons = you might have an adverse effect on this matter. I think you should segregate Analog Pocket Patreons separately.

Baylor Guild

If Pocket subscribers don't want this DRM to help support core development, I suggest just dropping Pocket support. Let someone else do free R&D for a private company.

MEM3NTO

Jotego, I want to first tell you that your work is Amazing and I'm literally a fan and supporter. I was first a MiSTer supporter and now Pocket as well. So I'm speaking from both sides. That said, I think you should really think about this more, with how you plan to move forward with both MiSTer and Pocket development. It's totally understandable you need more help. Talk to your team, talk to your discord, find the best solution to make everyone happy, of course, including You. I just don't think this current idea, having to send you our Pocket IDs and closed compilations, is the Best solution. To be honest, the beta_key for MiSTer was already an extra step that I had to accept and get used to. Maybe you can do something similar? Whatever you think or want to do, please be open and transparent, as you always have! We're here to support you bro!

Jose Luis Sánchez

I would be more than happy to contribute to analogue pocket separate tier to support this. For me your CPS and system 16 cores are the main reason I invested on a AP. Please, dont let this small AP community down. People needs to realize that these kind of skills needs to be paid.

16Bit SPY

Would it be possible to seperate your Patreon membership into two Patreon accounts, one for the MiSTer/MiST and another for the Analogue Pocket? I really don't like the idea of supporting a closed device pretending to be open source that is sold for profit by a corporation that doesn't care about the original customers that purchased the Analogue CMVS and true Chip Analogue NT, these customers that got it off the ground in the first place, now that company continues benefiting from my contributions to the MiSTer FPGA platform development, my contributions may be insignificant, they are only worth the price of a couple of coffees a month after all, but I do contribute to your Patreon membership growth in a big way by encouraging others to support you and by advertising what you do, by word of mouth in social media posts and message based conversations with other MiSTer user's that I offer tech support to in the early days of their MiSTer adventure. Maybe there is something wrong with the way I think and feel about this, but I know that I never felt this way about your support of the other platforms that you have developed for, it is this Analogue Pocket platform and its misleading position of being open source that is making me feel like this. Anyway that is how I feel, if I get trolled for posting this so be it, but it is how I feel and I had to get it off my chest.

Raymond Contreras

I just joined your Patreon as an Analogue Pocket owner. I think that getting help to put out more Pocket cores by having Patreons help fund the time and effort it takes to make and test these cores is fantastic. Although some may have an issue with this, I fully believe in people being compensated for work. Keep up the fantastic work and don't get disheartened out there by those that would dissuade you from hiring good people, to do good work and compensating them appropriately.

Pixel Cherry Ninja

@Jotego I've been thinking about this quite a bit. I've even shared my thoughts in a video on my YouTube channel (link at the bottom) How about, redoing the tiers (I'm using my local currency as an example). £2.50 MiSTer lowest tier (access to MiSTer beta cores) £2.50 Analogue Pocket lowest tier (access to AP beta cores) £4 for both MiSTer and AP beta cores (discount for having both) And then having your higher tiers for patrons that want to support that little extra. I'm not enthusiastic about providing my AP unique key, and would much rather prefer something like a beta key, like the one we use for the MiSTer. You're an excellent developer, who actually runs a good team. I wish you the best, and I hope whatever solution is decided upon, is a fair one that keeps everyone happy. Link to my video https://youtu.be/hIvrZKAosF8

Gord Allott

I'm just here to comment that I support this patreon for open cores, and not drm locked cores. Once drm locked cores start coming out I'll probably drop if there isn't a commitment to non drm versions at some point. Drm cores is not something I want to support financially.

Thorias

JT, You're doing an excellent job, and have your reputation on this subject from users/community, and so promoting Analog Pocket freely which is a specific gaming device, this users community starts to buy their products expecting to be able to use your "development/products" for free from Analog side...something doesn't sounds right on this scheme. Analog have to support financialy, and not just sending you a dev device, and let them wait for feedback money of your work and your patreons supporters. I'm not saying that you shouldn't develop on this device but since your aim is to grew, you have to take this in account and private companies should put some $$$ on the table as well. I believe you should discuss with them for some type of deal on that matter: I develop on your device = I bring you more buyers for your device = I expect some $$$ from your side as well. If they don't agree then it is up to you on the next step to take...

RP2A03

What if I own 2 Pockets? Can I send both hex id numbers? (not trying to do this for a friend, I really have another one sealed, and I would feel bad not being able to run these cores on that one if I ever decide to open it).

Pixel Cherry Ninja

@Jotego, Thanks for the reply, it definitely clarifies many things. I'm really not a fan of Analogue, based on their behaviour. There's definitely a few difficult decisions for you to deal with, but I'm sure you'll get there. Your transparency is appreciated.

Jeremy Hopkins

After reading the replies and the simplicity of the FPGA ID along with the desire from the community to see CPS3, think I have a greater understanding of the plan and the importance of additional support for another engineer. My hope is still to see a full release without the need for ID but if people want CPS3, that's going to require funding to make it happen and it has to come from somewhere.
