Join Matt and Chris for a deep dive into the discourse stirred up by Darryl Cooper’s controversial interview with Tucker Carlson. In this episode, the decoders tackle Cooper’s revisionist takes on Winston Churchill, Hitler, and WWII, asking whether throwing in strategic disclaimers really makes it all okay.

They also explore reactions from the wider comment-o-sphere, including the musings of libertarian firebrand/idiot Dave Smith, various historians and history YouTubers, and the hosts of Triggernometry, Konstantin and Francis, as they try to unpack Niall Ferguson’s sharp critique of Cooper. Along the way, Sam Harris enters the fray, on a search for grown-ups in the alternative media.

But does Harris offer a mature critique, or is he engaging in his own cycle of grievance-mongering? Matt and Chris examine his response and debate whether it rises above or contributes to the noise. Whether you are a staunch critic of Sam Harris or a devoted fan, we promise this episode has something to disappoint everyone!

Is there a man dumber than Frances on Triggernometry? This argument he and Kisin make that perceived problems with the left somehow justify their absurdly sloppy reasoning. It's like saying I get to crash my car because someone else got a DUI. Also, this notion that, due to changing demographics, white British people may not recognize "their" country in a decade or two, is so gross - Britain is just as much the country of the next generation as it is the country of this one.

Conal dunn

Thanks very much for your brilliant analysis of sam harris’ bullshit re springville

Saladus

The most unhinged thing that that Sam has said yet is that he double clicked on a hyperlink

JGraves

Isn’t the much of the endeavor of post war reconstruction in Europe and Japan based on the fact that the harsh treaty after WWI destabilized Germany and caused a power vacuum? Of course people talk about WWII in complex ways.

Saladus

But for real though, people rightly say that Sam should “do more research” on people and things before he opines about them, but what would that actually look like? Sam doesn’t trust academia or the media because of perceived woke capture. His first instinct is always to talk to the source itself because he wants his information unmediated. Yet he demonstrates again and again why that’s such a bad approach to getting information. So what is he to do? I’d of course suggest that he jettison his weird obsession with wokeness and deal more particularly with whatever issues that he’s grouping under the label, but it seems to be baked in at this point.

Chris Clark

It’s so weird isn’t it-all these people Sam berates for just “flipping on the microphone and shooting the shit”

Mark Francis

The conservative revisionists need to be beaten over the head with Timothy Synder’s book Bloodlands. Also our far left flank should also take note of what Stalin was up to in the name of collectivisation directed towards Soviet Ukraine and Poland particularly

Adam Sher

Sam's comment about Dave Rubin being very ethical and very journalistic aged poorly. 💩 ouch.

Alex H

Great episode! Sam beautifully rode the barrel of a mighty discourse wave, but was smashed upon the rocks of negative polarisation. What a ride though!

Emily

Is that clip of Sam Harris discussing Rubin from the Polite Conversations show?

Sam D.

Really interesting episode guys!

Kyle Dun

This was a great episode pointing out Sam's failures in reasoning and I hope he does listen to it, and takes it on board...probably not. What I think he should do, if he doesn't have time to do his own research, is hire a team to do it for him. How much would you charge him Chris and Matt. I'd rather pay you in advance for the right information than get criticized by you pro bono.

Chomagerider

Wow... Absolutely stunning how much of an effect one link can have on him. His grievance BS overwrites his whole OS... What a child.

Trees

Does Sam normally double-click links? Or only when he's triggered?

Floatgoat.

I feel terrible for this poor misunderstood Hitler fella🤡.

Chomagerider

Chris, you really have to calibrate your political compass. Bari Weiss isn't conservative! Rand Paul just called her and the FP "on the left"... oh, her and Taibbi and Glenn Greenwald... so there... 🤮

Floatgoat.

Wait to all these religious/new found religious/anti immigrant/great replacement theorist folks find out that all these people in the Bible aren’t white. Going to be a sad day.

Frances Sebesta

Don’t forget, until recently Oprah Winfrey thought the Holocaust was just one bunch of white guys beating up another bunch of white guys. And had nothing to do with racism. Thankfully, someone took her quietly away and gave her a history lesson. While WW1 and WW2 are fairly central to history syllabi in Europe, the UK and Australia, I am not sure it is in the US.

Will

Could be overthinking it, but even the way Cooper said "Hitler and his boys" seemed almost affectionate.

Jeremy Stewart

Matt was spot on with his whiplash comment. I had the same feeling listening to the first part of this. He was saying great stuff about how awful and full of lies and fake content X is... cut to him saying he saw a video on X of a dog being spit roasted and who cares where it's from.

Chris Wishy

It really is quite spectacular for Sam to be so good at articulating rationally a problem and then completely breaking with logic altogether. It’s the flip side of saying, if Hitler was a vegan, vegans must be Nazis. Wtf.

Lys

Man, the whiplash with Sam is real. He has so many bad takes on things he shouldn't be even addressing bc its blatantly clear he's going off chinese whispers or assumptions. But when hes on point, he's on point. So infuriating.

SHOUNAK SARKAR

Excellent episode boys! As someone of Indian and particularly Bengali heritage (I grew up in Kolkata before migrating to NZ and then Australia), Churchill is unquestionably a monster! And that is how he is perceived across large segments of Indian society. He made disgusting racist comments towards us like "I hate Indians, they are a beastly people, with a beastly religion. Famine or no famine, they breed like rabbits"! And only if it was just restricted to comments. His policies of diverting Bengali produced grain away to the British army was directly responsible for the Bengali Famine in 1943. It wasn't due to lack of rain or drought. Estimates vary but the famine killed around 1 million to 2.6 million people. It was horrific! I consider him a genocidal monster. However, despite my hatred of Churchill, I can acknowledge that he was fighting an even bigger and more openly genocidal monster named Hitler. So, I have zero sympathies for Daryl Cooper, who is clearly a Nazi sympathiser OR for Tucker Carlson, who clearly is a far-right ethnonationalist bigot.

SHOUNAK SARKAR

2/ As for the USA bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I am much more sympathetic to that than before. All you have to do is read the "Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang. The Japanese military's actions in China and elsewhere in Asia during WWII were more brutal and barbaric than Nazis. Just like the Nazis, those Shinto Buddhist fascists believed in racial supremacy theories (Japanese above everyone else) and had imperial ambitions to conquer large parts of Asia, (because it was unfair that China had so much land). Like modern Jihadists, they even practiced suicide bombing and martyrdom. So they had to be stopped at all costs. Japan even dropped bombs in West Bengal and in Darwin, Australia. And also unlike modern day Germans, the Japanese have never really atoned for what they did in the past. This is relevant for you Chris, since you live there. But from what I have read, Japanese kids don't know much about their country's fascist and genocidal history. They haven't paid much reparations and in fact many Japanese even laud those war criminals. See Yasukuni Shrine. Imagine Germany building a shrine for Nazis in Berlin. So, in sum total, Churchill was a monster, Americans had issues with slavery and segregation and the nuclear bomb was terrible; but unbelievably both were definitely the lesser of evils compared to the Japanese and Nazis.

SHOUNAK SARKAR

3/ As for Sam Harris, screw that reactionary, bigoted bastard. You guys explained and articulated your disagreements really well. His pivot to Muslims in Europe and the pivot on Cooper was a classic Douglas Murray-esque move. Hell, I’m a liberal but I consider Bulwark to be much more intellectually honest, more substantial in its criticisms of progressives & the left compared to the supremely arrogant, thin skinned, Hollywood trust fund bastard Harris. I still disagree with you guys that you consider him some well meaning “liberal”. He’s most decidedly not. Or at least his content or rhetoric are not, regardless of who he votes for. Matt & Chris, you both make excellent criticisms of Harris but you also give him too much charity & benefit of the doubt. I’m sorry but enthusiastically promoting Douglas & Charles Murray, supporting torture, racial profiling, race-IQ science and making bigoted comments like “London has fallen to Islam” doesn’t make him not a racist. And that’s not even to mention the hundreds of other ignorant things that Harris has said about Sati, colonialism and other issues etc.

Damien

Cue Sambo Harris right to reply #3

Dermot

Great episode guys, thanks! And please if he comes back on the pod be prepared to smash him if he starts promoting ethnic cleansing again!! 🙏🙏

Robert Andrews

Great pod. Nice pushback from *checks notes* Niall Ferguson (!!) *checks notes again* yes, indeed it is Niall Ferguson! Wow. Glad to see he put Konstantin and Francis in their places. In fact, I have read his book, War of the World, that he referenced in the episode and actually really enjoyed it. He has some interesting vignettes in there about the British soldier who captured miles of trenches single-handedly in WWI, which was not about heroism as such, but the fact that the Germans were exhausted and ready to surrender on the battlefield putting a lie to the claim that they lost through a "stab in the back". I think he may have also pointed out that despite Ludendorff and Hindenburg's suspicions, Jews DID fight in WWI, as a report that they commissioned then supressed showed. Another great book that might be interesting for debunking purposes is Richard Evans's account of himself as expert witness against David Irving when he tried to sue Deborah Lipstadt for libel. The book is called Lying For Hitler (I think), and shows all the ways that Irving twisted the primary sources to suit his exculpatory books about Hitler and the Nazis, and indeed why it was that Churchill was the real baddie. As has been mentioned, Churchill had some pretty big stains on his legacy but to claim he was worse than Hitler is an insane view.

Jonathan Cano

Sam Harris "I don't know Dave Rubin's content or even the person very well but I met him face to face a few time so I think he is a good guy" -- reminds me of GW Bush looking into Putin's eye's and seeing his (trustworthy) soul".

Jonathan Cano

While Sam is easily triggered (e.g. like telling Trump his rallies are boring) it is also true that SPLC is guilty of that binary categorization of Sam as opposed this decoding episode. It makes me sad -- Sam really is great on the points you highlight but he is so naive and easy to hack. Just hide your power level with a few disclaimers and presto Sam is your buddy because the "woke mob is ignoring your disclaimers". Good on him for taking Chris's wisdom on board regarding Tucker Carlson though. Sam needs to read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_skin Sam also needs to listen to Robert Evans (Behind the Bastards) audiobook https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3cdREY_Ask . In that video or perhaps subsequent chapters Evans talks about the "hiding your power level" and white supremacy switching to a leaderless resistance model after several prosecutions by the FBI.

Martin Birch

How can Sam Harris consider himself an intellectual and be so intellectually lazy? It’s the same thing over and over again. He just doesn’t do any research.

DavenPsych

I may be in the minority with this opinion, but I find Sam Harris absolutely mind-numbing to listen to. I usually listen to DtG while doing chores at home or clerical tasks at work, and find myself tuning him out almost immediately. His voice is like white noise.

Monica B.

Sam’s whole ‘but they’re nice to me in person so they can’t be that terrible thing’ schtick reminds me of (usually) men who defend their friends from accusations of sexual assault or (usually) white people who defend friends from accusations of racism, in both cases not believing victims, because hey, they were never uncool or violent or racist toward them! So frustrating, especially when it’s used to defend public figures who should be held accountable and challenged . Most people are probably cool one on one to their peers, or others who have some power in a situation. Great episode!!

Randy

Thank you for saying all the things I was thinking when I listened to that Sam Harris podcast.

Kerena

Is this where we shout out our North American cities and try to lure Matt with our local hamburger specialties? I can start with Pittsburgh PA!

James P.

"I don't understand why someone who was once a highly effective conservative broadcaster is, at least, enabling fascism"... Hmmm Niall, I don't know. Maybe Tim Pool might have a guess?

Cameron Buff

With the new revelations about tenant media, I'm fully convinced tucker is being paid by Russia, dude managed to sneak a Russian apologist line about the current war when discussing WW2

Sam Mountjoy

Rory Stuart went on Chris Williamson's podcast and the comments section was absolutely catastrophic. Everyone was saying how out of touch he is, that he doesn't understand the pain of having immigrants cause crime, that the Welsh stabber being of Rwandan heritage means something. Completely missed all the conversations about the ineptitude of the Tory government, of the white hall crew making radical change more difficult etc.

Linda Sears

The demonization of immigrants going on now in the US is very painful. Many of my students are either first or second generation immigrants from all over Africa, the Middle East, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, East Asia, especially Southeast Asia, and Central and South America. Most of them are just trying to make a life for themselves, and the second generation kids in particular seem more typically American than I am. The only former student at my college who caused massive harm was the El Paso shooter, who was white and racist and justified his actions with great replacement ideology.

Jean-François Melançon

Very interesting comments about Cooper! I didn't watch the interview with Carlson nor loot at his Twitter, but I have listened to a lot of his podcast. I was aware of the fascist allegations and kept a critical distance when listening, but still found the podcast great. Now that I have a clearer idea of the character of the man behind it, I wish I could find more in depth criticism of Martyrmade

Jason K

Cooper's feigned surprise at the response his appearance elicited is funny given that these people love to depict themselves as vessels of forbidden knowledge at all other times.

Dial-1-2-enter-in-2-diaLOGOS

Sam Harris: I happen to know Dave as a deeply ethical person. Later on Rubins Twitter/X: «Mass expulsion of an ethnic group by a porn star. Lady, you’ve had too many loads blown on your face. « And «Why don’t you offer all of Hezbollah to move into your coochie?» Both in response to Mia Khalifa. I’m getting increasingly dizzy from all these big ideas. I’ll never return to conventional media now that I’ve been taught how to have polite conversations by an ethical person.

Tree

Thanks for covering this. Right after it came out I had an older relative telling me how great it was. I was thinking this sounds like neo-nazi stuff but I also dont want to have to listen to 3 hours of it to have this conversation...

Bill

yep I'm going to bow out on this one. Props to y'all for being able to cover the full spectrum. Stupidity truly knows no bounds

Dee Loves Ketchup on Eggs

Ohhh man….this should be a good one where the Gurometer goes off like a REMpod in a ghost investigation. Can’t wait for my ears to plug into this one!
