Because the antichrist…and…and…and…so…so…you know. Something something Antichrist, something something world government. Which are both bad. And…so…we need them both. QED.

I think moral grandstanding is the entry threshold. All of them have a moral imperative, maybe not grandstanding but the fact that we even know about them implies that. 🤔

Re: Moral Grandstanding: Thiel said, on The Free Press, if Trump didn't win in 2024, then freedom was done because if he couldn't beat the cathedral, then it was undefeatable. That overlaps with Cassandra but the way he phrased it, if you believe in freedom, then you must make one choice only.

Breaking: Decoding the Gurus to bring back Catholic heresy laws, trial by fire, and inquisition. When the students become the masters.

Life out here as both a philosophy phd and and a dtg enjoyer becoming more and more difficult by the day ☠️

Antithisestablishmentarianism is really good

James P.

We should be able to have A LITTLE bit of an inquisition

I have actually wondered for years if we were being marked on bell curves in Aus.

Lex, Elon, Thiel, and Yarvin are the definitive no charisma gurus.

Excellent episode. Makes sense that the scoring for gurus would need revisiting: you’re visiting them at a moment in time, but they’re all on the Hero’s journey, so evolution is inevitable 🤣. On U.K. grading: I think my kids were told a grade of 80 or above is worthy of submission for publication.

Matt, what’s your score for Thiel on galaxy brainness? I can’t catch that

Kit Zullasson

Enjoyed the asides and banter in this one. Have to say though, I get narcissistic vibes from Thiel. Might be a covert and vulnerable type. Needs to be regard from others but is afraid of to be unmasked when too much in public. Your understanding of narcs mostly seems to equate them with the overt and grandiose variety, which makes sense given the guru profession.

Gosh, the last own about philosophy is, I gotta say, probably fair. ‘Overdetermination’ does it - it’s mainly a philosophy of mind concept. But in our defence, we don’t have the conviction of thiel and other gurus to end up here. We might say ‘well, there is a possible world where the bible predicts Musk shutting down a government institution that would regulate X when it becomes a payment platform’ but we wouldn’t then go on a podcast and say ‘take it seriously’ Philosophers are as reasonable or otherwise as anyone else. But we do work on the possible ways things can be, and our saner membership don’t slide from the possible to the desirable to the probable to the true Unlike these (possible, undesirable, probable) nutjobs

I mean, I didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition….

David Noble

Ironic that Theil is anti-establishment whilst also being firmly part of the established order being a billionaire. But then when have the gurus ever been reasonable people.

Some quibbles - getting 90+ in an English uni isn't impossible. On my engineering course if you really knew the material and had a bit of luck with questions you could get super high marks. On coursework (eg lab work) and for non stem subjects I think they basically never give out top marks but if you're doing a paper where all the questions have definite answers and specific methods you go through to get them then you can get 100. I got 92 on a material science exam and 86 on a maths one for example. The top grade is 70 so for most people getting a super high marks only matters insofar as it drags your average up if you bombed on a different module. Also I don't think it's that confusing for students anymore, it's something that will be hammered into you before you arrive and in your first year which doesn't even count towards your overall grade for your degree.

Matt has disrespected Thales 2 times in a row now 😒

Re: grading scales on university Time for my grievance mongering. Criminology course was fished by very formalised written exam and there was cutoff point, lowest 10% failed independently of their score. I passed with good grade, but nevertheless I thought this is sooo unfair and spent entire day arguing on Facebook with our academic teachers about it. If people got 14/20 they should pass, I don’t care that test was too easy!

Peter Thiel is one of the funniest gurus. He will be in my pantheon of top tier gurus alongside Weinstein brothers, Jordan Peterson, Hasan Piker and Dr K. Sensemakers surround them like little angels.

Suggestion RE: Bro-isity I've noticed it's direct inverse, a kind of pompous snobbish anglophile affectation which I feel should count. Maybe combine them? Bro-isity / Pompous Affection? Douglas Murray, Peter Theil, Eric Winestine -- all pompous affectatorites.

His narcissism is hidden and more apparent in his actions and history

I'm in favour of an inquisition that leaves atheists alone and concentrates on people that claim to be religious and come out with blatant contradictions with the basic tenets. Like those really annoying people that claim to be catholics and then say the Pope should STFU. No. There are rules. That's the whole point, you fuckwit. You don't get to pick and choose. It's a whole deal thing and you're either in or you're out. On the rotten tomatoes thing - there's a great word in French, "illuminé", which literally means "enlighted one" but in colloquial use is a pejorative term for over-enthusiastic delusional nutters. The candidate gurus could achieve the rank of the Illuminated if they pass a certain threshold of outstanding merit, I feel. Or pick something else, ovs, but that's my vote. (Maybe there should be a vote for the preferred term?)

One other consideration for guru characteristics which I'm not sure about, but I think is interesting to think about, is fanaticism. I don't think this overt, at first sight (unlike narcissism, for eg). But it feels to that someone like Gad Saad is just a gobshite (maybe not a great example, as he's a bit of a failure as a guru). Whereas someone like Thiel, for all his lack of charisma, inarticulacy and silly incoherence of much of his half-baked notions, does strike me as having an underlying fanaticism to his personal psychology

His interpretation is of Revelation isn't actually off base. Most Biblical scholars would agree that Revelation is straight up about Roman oppression and Emperor Nero. So applying this to a modern empire (or NWO?) is pretty dang true to the original.
