Oh yeah, 24 minutes of Destiny discussion right into my feed

Kit Zullasson

Concerning Destiny: If someone is fine hanging out with mentally unwell people, doesn't that point to them being mentally unwell, too? Destiny gives off cold and self-righteous vibes to me, and the self-reflective talk is like another self-presentation technique and not a sign of wisdom.

Bobby Wayward

Chris has an iron will. I cannot listen to more than 10 seconds of the absolute nothing-burger, wasteful verbal diarrhea that spews out of these various figures mouths without wanting to crawl out of my skin.

Joe Euro

Re: the ancestors tale - I too listened to and loved that audiobook but I seem to remember Dawkins veering off into a weird rant about diversity and job interviews at one point. It's been a while since I listened so maybe I drifted off and dreamt that bit! Did I imagine that?

Grignard Girlie

As an American I can confirm that I have eaten and enjoy Tim Tams. I honestly thought they were British tho so sorry about that 😅 can also confirm that we don’t like Americans

Mike Nelson

Destiny strikes me as a borderline-groomer, sleeping with barely legal-aged (in the US) women who are often times not mentally well, and then engaging in revenge porn. My gut feeling has always been he's a creep and best avoided. I can get my political analysis elsewhere.

Sarah Warren

Comparison with sensemakers not fair to Jazz!

Amy

Releasing this 4 days before National Tim Tam Day seems appropriate! I’m not Australian. I’m going to see if I can find them here in Canada.

Adam Sher

I hold out BarPod's analysis of Elon as the authoritative version of The Gesture

Adam Sher

Re Americans hating other parts of America... I cannot relate. The country is huge and awesome. To quote Trey Parker and Matt Stone, " America, fuck yeah"

In his right of reply episode, Destiny explained that he preferred having sexual relationships with his fans over people who didn’t know who he was. His reasoning for this was bad (he didn’t like that non-fans wouldn’t understand his work). Which was a pretty big red flag. It meant he was seeking out relationships with people who had a para-social dynamic. I knew then that he would have a sex scandal sooner or later.

Daniel

Your original guru episode on Destiny gave me the sense that he was abusive to romantic partners, so I'm not at all surprised by the scandal.

Ad Tastic

I think the amount of brain power the Left have expended on Elon Musk's Nazi salute is symptomatic of why they're struggling with the electorate all over the world right now. Yes yes an obnoxious prat, but so long as he's defunding US tax money to DEI programs in Serbia or counter misinformation campaigns in Kazakhstan or transgender opera in Peru he's doing just fine. But let me know when he breaks out the yellow star badges.

Jimmy

Speaking of Destiny, does this mean we'll never get those types of videos of Matt and Chris on the Patreon? If so, I may have to reconsider my subscription.

George

Flipping hell that Bryan Johnson bit nearly made me frisbee my phone down the frozen aisle in Aldi. Just think for a second, that fucking philosophical monologue he gave all stemmed from a video of a middle aged bloke doing a leg press. Give me strength. These blokes are cornballs. It's the long and short of it. They just happen to be cornballs who are also some of the wealthiest people on earth.

Tim Tripp

Thanks for being our shield.

aneladgam_varelse

Elon Musk is neurodivergent awkward guy - yeah that’s EXACTLY the kind of person who would troll himself into doing nazi salute on stage

Tim Tripp

Genghis Khan? You can say he is bad but he did alot of good too, like making the yak trains run on time.

aneladgam_varelse

No wonder that theologians debate whether Jesus laughed. From this supplementary material we’ve learned proper gurus don’t have sense of humour. Believing in laughing Jesus is like denying his guru status

Good yarn! RT is evil and has been pro Rogan 2015 before Trump was on the scene. The RT comment sections are insane with a mix of manoshere grievances and anti- establishment anti semetic theories about how the Zionist (deep state) have hijacked the US government. I don’t bother reading that comment section anymore, 5 minutes is enough really to get the Turner Diaries vibe. Same with Breitbart comment section too.

Frances goulart

Applause! you have hit pause with the D man... he's not a food group in my life... I'd rather eat backyard snails ( you should try it!)

Frances goulart

Big swinging balls? Where can I watch that? Hold my beer!

Carina S.

I thought it was really great, Chris, that at the end you mentioned the danger of this demonology shite. I'm sure I don't have to tell you guys about that but I've often gotten mad at Pageau for sense-make-masturbate about this when there is so much religious abuse going on in the world. He should talk to some of the Polish kids being "exorcised", i.e. abused and frankly tortured, for misbehaving, being ill or not fitting gender norms. This "judeo-christian values" fetish is so hypocritical. Apart from that: wonderful episode, loved your take on Destiny and hearing about terrible Australian food and Huberman's latest heroic deeds.

Nicholas

So, the bit about how Australians criticising Australia too much are being narcissistic is - to spell it out - referring to the performative critiques of colonialism common throughout professional Australia. Cheap trick to maximise social capital, especially in fields like academia. Source: experience in academia.

peta austen

only a little way through this, as a West Aussie I have to disagree with Matt on 3 things: 1. west Australia loves the Irish, so many Irish pubs, everyone trying to split the G, and enjoying the craic. 2. west Aussie food culture is fantastic, cheap and cheerful Vietnamese in every suburb, loads of Indian and Thai and Japanese also, that's the cities, country Towns not so much. 3. Tim Tams, the only improvement on the original is the double choc. cheers

Ty Black

👋🏻 I really appreciate you two reevaluating your analysis of Destiny given the allegations, but I do think you should include how men look at sexual relationships in your analysis going forward. If men treat women a certain way, it should set off alarm bells for you. It sets off alarm bells for me. And I feel less safe in communities where this isn't more obvious. Maybe there just aren't enough women here? I dunno. I'm glad you were aware of the issues. I'm glad you've reassessed. But the red flag might should be a deeper red next time.

Salex

Lex’s tweet sounded like something the emo teenage boys I went to school with would post on MySpace. So many feelings… Even at 15 we knew to AVOID boys like that.

Matt

I think you guys went too easy on Destiny here (saying this as a former Destiny fan) I think you should have mentioned these points - Destiny has indirectly admitted to the Pixie allegation in some leaked DMs - Destiny's response to Pixie's allegation was terrible. He didn't take accountability for anything and he tried to make himself seem like the true victim of the whole situation - There have been many other allegations since the Pixie one - For the past few weeks, he's been having a meltdown in his personal website chat desperately trying to regain control of the narrative and smear his victims in some pretty disgusting ways - Destiny has spent a ton of time on stream talking about the importance of consent and sexual boundaries, so this whole thing makes him a massive hypocrite and someone whose opinions should not be taken seriously. I realize you may not be aware of some of these points, but I think you should have spent more time looking into this situation and at least criticized his horrendous response to the Pixie allegation on his reddit.

Jesse Rimler

Now that the dust is settling, it seems like Chris had mild intellectual crush on Destiny, probably because they seem to align both politically and temperamentally (see Chris’s Twitter persona). Chris admitted to listening to hundreds of hours of his content (!) Destiny always seemed like a motormouthed creep to me, wading cockily into complex territories after inhaling enough wikipedia to keep his schtick afloat. A telling popping of his bubble is in his Israel/Palestine debate with Nathan Robinson, where he argues that the British Peel commission wouldn’t have involved violence against the Palestinians, just ‘transfer of people off of property.’ Certainly superior to many of the gurus covered, but the bar is low.

Bradley Rode

Our hosts are now sounding very pro-Bayesian, encouraging the interpretation of Musk’s salut conditional on prior data 😉

Well, it’s tricky: Destiny has acted like a massive twat*, no mistaking that. Yet also, he has something to say, that’s worth listening to. It’s not like history isn’t filled with people who were massive twats, who we still read and find value in today. I think it’s a difficult knot to untie, to be honest, but thank you for addressing the issue head on. *heavy understatement.

Cuzn Ed

Dawkins on Elmo [paraphrased]: Well, he’s always been nice to me…

Sam D.

Thanks for your careful explication of the Destiny business- it was a warranted unpacking, and clarity in such situation is appreciated (by this listener anyway). I agree with the previous listener that there was probably enough smoke, prior to your convo with him, to indicate maybe a fire. It would have been red flags to a lot of women. But our antenna are more attuned. But this is how how we learn. So, appreciate that you addressed it and did a good job.

Ok so as a Canadian I've always had an affinity with Australians y'know - Commonwealth Forever amirite?? But surprised to hear Matt down on Aussie food culture -because we are DIE HARD MasterChef Australia fans here in Canada. That show is chicken soup for the soul and by far, the best franchise in the global phenomenon Weve had family travel there and RAVE about the produce quality and shit too. Anyway I'm starting to appreciate that this foodie Aussie culture I guess is some high class superlayer overtop a pedestrian, boring and bland food culture everywhere else?? You guys are ruining my Aussie dreams here in Canada "oh my god they have such a great food culture!" We think up here, watching mateship and culinary delights evolve over the course of 60 episode seasons But WE WERE BEING LIED TO

ketracel-white 🧁

anything salted caramel flavor is the shiiittt! best stuff. also sea salt on dark chocolate is fire. :D

Neely McCormick

In out social media landscape even Dawkins likes “likes”❤️

Kgar

I just want you two to know … I was literally laughing out loud, —reading that Lexi-poo stuff? Omg that just filled my heart with joy 😂😂 And Matt I love your observations about Americans and our country as well as the insight into yours. I’ve been many many places, but never down under.

Julie🇨🇦

Who cares what food tastes like when you can hardly afford it these days?

Bill

“Musk’s gesture” is far too kind. It’s a nazi salute. Let’s not sanity wash it.

Alexander Tronstad

I understood that this Destiny-case as ongoing and that a lot of his defense is under wraps due to him being unable to speak freely until his day in court. So I hope to see him back. He was such a brilliant match with the Decoding-crew, and in light of the noisemakers out there, I'd hope this doesn't end up holding you back from more episodes collaborating with him. His skills is so needed in this time. It's a breath of fresh air to have him skilfully and angrily dismantle the absolute lunacy that goes on politically nowadays. It's a voice that's sorely needed out there.

Andrew Millar

Always a bit baffled by your interpretation of people meeting. And the inference that someone like Dawkins should criticise Musk publicly. It seems like any interpersonal encounter between public figures should not be tolerated, unless it descends into public, critical argument. Seems a bit petty, which jars with the vast majority of your criticisms, which are well thought out and insightful.

Linda Sears

Chris’s serious Lex voice when reading out his tweets gets me every time.

Julie🇨🇦

Matt, what’s a fairy? I think that was 1970’s lingo. Maybe it came back

SHOUNAK SARKAR

Well, have to say that I agree with Matt’s assessment of Australian cuisine. It is terrible lol! Only saved by the waves of migration from France, Italy, Middle East, India, China, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Aussie gourmet restaurants which utilise native ingredients are good, albeit pricey & a tad pretentious. In terms of culture, unfortunately we seem to import the worst of American culture. Whether that be thuggish gangsta rap or Southern Redneck culture. Australia desperately needs more smart people like Matt & less bogans lol. Trust me, I live in Perth and the average person here is a bogan miner or tradie who has mullets & tattoos galore, drives a massive 4WD, constantly speeds & tailgaits and drinks copious amounts of alcohol. And Aussie comedy sucks too! Basically it’s just saying a variation of “fuck” and “cunt” repeatedly while doing crude sex & toilet jokes! Intellectualism is rather lacking.

Chris Wishy

The food in remote Northern Queensland is probably not that exciting 😆

Frances Sebesta

Matt, you should live in Newtown NSW. Great food scene, the tradies line up with the locals for their morning 6 am coffee fix, bogans are just another sub-group rubbing shoulders with every other sub-group from goths to students to the middle classes, all within a 4 kilometre radius of the city. Best place on earth (besides NY, London and Paris).
