Don't give up guys on reporting on the anti-vaccine nonsense. It may be still theoretical to many but here in the US we are looking down the barrel of a loaded gun, with the public health infrastructure being aggressively dismantled and no guarantee that even those that WANT vaccines will be able to get them in a year. And measles, bird flu, etc waiting in the wings.

As a German following the recent debate on the lab leak . Our intelligence service rated the probability being it a lab leak in 2020 to 80-95% , as far as it is know they had on the ground information from China, they presented it to Chancellor Merkel at that time. Government decided not to go public , which is understandable, as BND has a shaky record. Our head virologist Christian Drosten and the Leader of Rober Koch Institute were briefed by the Government in late 2024 after the collapse of the last government . After that Drosten and Wieler changed their tone noticeably . Also Zeit and Süddeutsche are very well know for their investigative teams and are def. center-left publications, comparable to the NYT. So the BND has some info which they cannot or will not publish. The new thing is that this info was shared with American Intelligence which also changed tone after that. Zeit and SZ are not arguing for or against lab leak, they only report what had happened in German government

Two big spikes in lab leak interest, incidentally, both happened right when Michael Gordon wrote articles about it. His first article was about "3 sick researchers at Wuhan Institute of Virology". Gordon is the guy who first said Iraq has WMD's. Just like the WMD's story there were no "3 sick researchers at WIV. Looking at views from people in China you have an almost exact mirroring of the conspiracy believed in the US. In a 2021 poll, 53% of people in China answered that Covid came from the US: More than half of those people think Covid specifically came from a US lab, while some of them think it came from US "wet markets" or from US frozen food. Only 12% of Chinese people blame Chinese wet markets, and less than 1% blame Chinese labs.

I can see both Matt and Chris’s sides to the does the lab leak matter debate. I tend to fall on the side that it has turned into an ideological issue even if it shouldn’t be because of the greater distrust of science in general and the desire to blame humans as opposed to animals (even though it’s really not the fault of animals). The mad scientist playing with our destinies is a much juicier story to latch onto than a wet market causing people who handle animals to get sick. Add in the cover up and you’ve got a perfect conspiracy theory to latch on to. 🐍

Some thoughts on the lab leak discussion amd wether it has real life implications: 1. It could change the view on china. This could have effects in international relations as well as how the chinese view ccp. 2. It could decide whether or not there are much similar research labs in the future. 3. It could be one of many factors deciding how much money is allocated to research labs like that
