Petersen's fundamental approach is to assume that symbolism has only one 'right' interpretation, and that interpretation is always correlated with some socio-evolutionary outcome. To do this he first assumes that the socio-evo outcome is universally sought and valued, then projects it back onto the authors (which seems odd that the authors of Genesis would be concerned about free speech or that one of the authors of one of many versions of Sleeping Beauty would be concerned with birth rates) and then interpolates it forwards to some rounded up statistic in an abstract of some meta-analysis out of Mongolia.

Need to mention in the decoding how thoroughly JP has bought the image of Musk as an uber-genius tech-god who 'inserts the 21st century into the 19th century in DC' with his army of teenagers all backed by AI. JP gurifies Musk to an immense degree whilst blind to him obvious pathologies and, it's incredible to hear

Was Shellenberger arguing that it’s better to figure out how government works by “doing things out in the world” and that “you don’t really know what is going on until you move fast and break things?” I’m pretty sure there are many people within the government, people working for NGOs, journalists who cover international aid and development, as well as academics in history and political science who know how government agencies work and know what USAID has been doing “out in the world.” But I guess these experts are all corrupt and are actively trying to undermine the work of true patriots, so go ahead and throw in a Molotov cocktail and find out what happens next.

My admiration for Mat grows the more exposure I have to the guru’s. The more content I watch the less I am able to tolerate. They make me feel deeply disquieted about the human condition. It’s not them, there have always been nutters, it’s the legions of followers. It’s the persist nag at the back of my mind that sometimes literally millions of minds are listening to the same incoherent drivel and see beauty and wisdom in its place. Mat has some kind of steel in him that I lack. To be able to plough through so much of it and not collapse into existential crisis is some kind of miracle.

Having read all the comments I take heart in the pain shared. I’ll try to get through it again. I’m making no promises. Maybe there should be a new variable on the gurometer. Listening is like swimming through treacle so it could be called the treacle scale. A scale of 0 to 10, 0 being a light syrup de gomne, 10 being spoon standing molasses. It wouldn’t need to be subjective, the answer could be derived from the viewing figures.
