Love Matt’s explanation of the tariff formula !!!

Thanks for rehashing Lex’s Joe Rogan serenade 🤮😭

One criticism (hopefully will capture you with this)....not long enough.

Did Eric Weinstein really tell an Israeli government official “ you never call?” That’s a very Jewish stereotype!

Thanks for the epic length!

Nice one boys! Finished my weekend vaccum cleaning listening to this haha XD! Regarding Joe Rogan, I feel like some of the leftist content creators want to carve away some of his audience so they feel the need to frame it as "oh he was good before, but he changed". Totally get why they do it, but 100% agree with Chris that it isn't actually true. Rogan has always been a braindead conspiracist moron, going back years. He has been friends with Alex Jones for decades, flirted with moon landing conspiracies, 9/11 trutherism etc. It's just that his hard-right reactionary politics are way more overt now, compared to years ago where it was more subtle and he could go many videos without bringing up politics. Nice interview with Flint Dibble too! Love the guy, looking forward to his own new video addressing Hancock and Rogan. Will also check out Contrapoints.

2/ With regards to Chris Williamson, I never shared the semi-positive opinion you had of him, Chris K. I get he sent you free drink samples and stuff, but regardless, Williamson is just another manosphere / brosphere podcaster regurgitating the same right wing, populist drivel as Rogan, Lex, Theo Von, Tommy Robinson and others. The only difference is his model good looks and restrained style. All these total bastards are having a harmful effect on young men, Gen Z men are turning far to the right politically, while Gen Z women are becoming more progressive. Not a good recipe for future healthy relationships between this cohort. I see young intelligent graduates coming into my Budget Modelling team. I as a Millennial am struggling to relate to these people, as invariably a lot of the young men (this is in Australia mind you), are big fans of Rogan, Elon Musk, Trump. Some even love Lex, Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro and defend Andrew Tate from his rape accusations. It is depressing! Anti-woke mind virus is a real thing. The only consolation is that these idiots are just obsessed with American culture wars and are apathetic about Australian politics, despite the compulsory voting. See this new article about this phenomenon btw, its about Canadian politics but very interesting. "How young men are changing what conservatism looks like in Canada" - (https://www.cbc.ca/news/investigates/canada-votes-election-conservative-divide-1.7507694)

On Matt’s dismantling global capitalism comment, I had the same thought. Someone suggested to me that in addition to how the tariffs were done (and why), there are a few key issues. Domestically, any expected benefits protectionism would be undermined by the dismantling of the US government and subversion of the judiciary (which makes decisions on labour disputes). Internationally, Trump does not tolerate reciprocal protectionist policies. In a lot of cases, he is using tariffs to undermine other’s political and economic sovereignty (see Canada, Mexico etc). He’s not really dismantling capitalism, he’s just trying to ignore the rules, while expecting everyone else to abide by them.

Kelley

lol, Matt claiming leftists should be happy about Trump’s tariffs because they don’t like free trade is like saying you should be happy about getting a haircut with a chainsaw because you like short hair. I’m no economist, but do I have to be in order to be in favor of a sensible tariff policy? Like Chris said, it’s reasonable in this case to say “yes, tariffs but, no, not in the stupidest way possible”.

Cole

Man I had just listened to the Chris Williamson right to reply this morning. He seemed well intentioned and earnest. Hearing him and Joe at the end of this was a little upsetting.

Ando

Great ep. Love all the supplementaries

Emma

So, thoughts. Does anyone else think Lex's song about Joe is a little homoerotic? I'm increasingly convinced he is secretly gay. Do straight men think about each other's giant shoulders and rippling muscles this much?

RareTripleBait

Hasan is really hard to understand. Not because of his incoherence but the editor fucked up. It’s just too fast

Nick

Great ep! More evidence the tariffs where calculated by AI (and why small islands where seperated out) - they were organised by ccTLD names (country code top-level domain names) rather than by country (like .hm for Heard and McDonald Islands - the penguin island - even though they are an Australian territory). This would be something a LLM would filter by

Chomagerider

Masculinity or a lack thereof was never a topic in my life. Been friends with bros and more effeminate types all my life. Never had an issue with people who supposedly 'lacked' masculinity...for stretches of my life I probably fell into that category myself (Brian Molko of Placebo was my hero, after all, and pink is still one of my favorite colours🤭). Now, though, I suddenly find myself feeling a type of rage against self proclaimed, cold plunge obsessed MEN who behave like whiny little BITCHES!!! They almost disgust me. And they're supposed to solve the masculinity crisis (if that's even a thing)? Grow a pair, you dumb losers!!! Hearing you guys call them out for this was almost cathartic. Thank you!

Mark Vaughan

This is the sort of maladjusted trollish critique that I'm here for. Most of my favourite clown villains made an appearance, just left out Jordan Peterson crying about something incomprehensibly tragic he imagined while in conversation with the metaphysical dialogos and imagery of his grandmother's pubes - with that included it would have been perfect. Great episode!

Tree

Oh Chris, still trying to prove you arent biased against the left by being Ok with Contrapoints. Thankfully Matt cut you off.

Ymirsdreams

Rogan is imposing a serenade tariff for all guests. US citizens only need to address one body part. Penguins at least three.

Heidi Sævareid

I'd just about managed to forget about the Joe Rogan song after the previous episode! Then you had to bring it up again. I've spent the last few hours humming "barrel of snakes for a back", and I'm NOT happy about it!!!!!!!

Mark Francis

I just finished Eric Kurlander’s book ‘Hitler’s monsters’ a supernatural history of the third reich. It’s a great companion read to Flint as well DtG, with its detail history of the guru’s and border science that they preached. As well the reasons why the third reich obsessed with Atlantis and Tibet…. Kurlander referenced Freud saying that believing in the supernatural is a right wing phenomenon, Kurlander had a more nuanced view that a belief in the supernatural is bipartisan however conservatives allow these border science beliefs to influence their politics, and liberals and the left do not mix their supernatural and political beliefs. I definitely have a different view of the horseshoe after reading his book. Kurlander would be an amazing guest interview…he had a particularly good one with the military podcast Stars and Strips.

Linda Sears

I just listened to the QAA episode about Hancock. It was good. Like you and them, I was perturbed by Hancock’s inability to comprehend that cultures can independently come up with similar ideas. For him, a totally bizarre theory, without any good evidence, about an advanced civilization with magic powers is more likely. I’d like a Hancock decoding. That would be a lot of fun.

jubshit

Nice! Anyone else notice the galaxy brain edition is 771 megabytes while the regular version is 71 megabytes. What happened there?

Jen

Polemical sycophantic partisan hypocrisy!! ⚽️🏀⚾️🥎🎾🏐 deep!! Joe really sounded weird in the background after he talked about the prison/Barron comment. Super creepy!!

Jen

The Great Dad Hole! That’s an Elephant Graveyard thing and it just really seems to explain all of these guys and their odd behavior for me. They sniff each other’s dopamine or something like that and ride their vibes. Like that uncomfortable Huberman smirk when he’s talking to another buff manly man.

JGraves

To be honest I'd be more shocked if Lex didn't write cringe worthy poetry.

Max

Eric would make the world's least profitable telemarketer

kurdelis

Enjoyed this on my right wing Sunday run. Chris, would you want to participate in Flint's "Scholars of Youtube festival"?

Jesse Rimler

While Hasan’s message may be more consistent on free trade than other trend followers, I am deeply embarrassed that he is such a leader on the left. He’s just a lazy thinker. For instance, his point that a lack of manufacturing inevitably leads to the decline of unions is so brainless. While the height of unionization in the US came at a time when we manufactured more, that doesn’t mean they are causally linked. I mean, look at levels of unionization in Norway or Sweden or Finland today — how much manufacturing happens in Scandinavia? a unionized McDonalds cashier in Sweden makes more than many union manufacturing jobs here.

Tommy Brooks

Great episode guys. Loved the cameo appearance by squeaky. If I were Matt, I'd try to sneak it back in every now and then just to wind up Chris.

Quietscheentchen

Regarding the Legolas method thing, that guy is wrong. Archery or throwing a javelin requires quite a lot of strength. English/Welsh longbowmen were known to be incredibly strong and firing a longbow required years of training to master. Also, javelin throwing is literally an Olympic sport (one of the original from 2000 years ago). I think that guy just had a red pilled brainfart about how ranged warfare is less manly or more effeminate because you don't have to physically grapple with a bunch of sweaty dudes.

Jake

The dynamic between Matt and Chris is a top exemplar of manly tough love. It's night and day compared with the usual pusillanimous dialogos between the usual gurus.

Nina J.

I love the use of “being poor builds character” in defense of the kleptocratic decisions of THE RICHEST administration in American history and a president who has never been anything but obscenely wealthy in his life (due not to his own efforts, but to inherited wealth). Weren’t these the same people scandalized for years over the misinterpretation of that whole “you’ll own nothing and be happy” thing? Just when I think I’ve become impervious to right wing hypocrisy, they up the ante again.

Russell

Gosh, I love Flint. I had the pleasure of interviewing him years ago in a Bruegger's Bagels when I was a reporter for University of Cincinnati's newspaper and he was a doctoral candidate. He and his research partner, Daniel Fallu, had just made some big discoveries about cattle ranching (or lack thereof) in the Greek Dark Ages. I remember saying, "You were literally named to be an archeologist."

Nina J.

Okay, so I finished the episode, and just - Jesus fucking Christ. More specifically, here’s my pet theory on Rogan’s purportedly fluid political orientation: I believe that there was a point at which he could, in a sense, be called apolitical; he’s an idiot jock, so of course he wouldn’t be interested in something as nerdy and complex as policy or political machinery. Before MAGA, the Republican Party had broadly the same platform and policy goals as they do now, but their image (at least at the national level) was still much more in line with the standard precepts of a major political party insofar as it at least gestured at competency, decorum, intelligence, etc.; even George W. did his best to toe some kind of line in that regard. MAGA so collapsed the distinction between the cultural and the political - and so embraced ball-scratching macho posturing - that Joe is not only finally able to understand policies that are dumbed down to the lowest possible common denominator, he can see himself embodied in the party’s avatars as well as its platform.

James Lucas

I'm skipping Joe sections from now on. It's just too much

Jen

I saw an old friend over the weekend who has some issues of her own. She told me that she likes Joe Rogan because he’s a comedian that gets high and he has mystical people on that believe in things. I told her that he has gone off the deep end and that she should listen to the Majority Report instead. I also told her that Flint Dibble is a real scientist. And that Jordan Peterson is not okay. I asked her to pay attention to how they speak about anyone that disagrees with them. I have done my dis-disinformation duties for the week. Will keep looking for more. 🫡

Dean

Ox-y-mo-ron noun a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory. terms appear in conjunction (e.g. lefty libertarian globalist)

michael r

Chris, have you seen Elephant’s graveyard review of the Joe rogan special? You might like somewhat of the anthropological angle of it

Tim Tripp

This was juicy one fellas. I was cringing a great deal of the time listening Rogan and Williamson whinging about criticism.

Par 🇨🇦

FYI leftwing libertarianism is very much a thing. Noam Chomsky, for example, identifies as a libertarian socialist. It’s quite popular among leftist to identify as such. Vaush is another example off the top of my head According to Wikipedia, libertarianism outside of the US is generally associated with left-wing politics but I suspect now that everything has been polluted with American political rhetoric that’s probably less true today Chomsky explains the difference here which reflects the articles on Wikipedia https://youtu.be/OgOa9UkCN-w

Trees

Geez Chris, celebrating Tesla arson! Good thing kind, rational Matt is there to temper your rage.

Matt Dear

Pseudohistory in rw guru reactionary sphere is driven by: anti-intellectualism; simple opposition to more 'progressive' academic ideas/analyses, like critical race theory, civil rights, colonialism, etc. Also, I think there is significant overlap in the cognitive biases of those that enjoy contrarian reactionary content, and the allure of 'secret knowledge'. As Chris points out, "what _else_ aren't they telling you?" That's why it goes both ways; rw reactionaries start getting into pseudo-egyptology, alien truthers start getting into nazi occultism.

Joanna Go

Hey! Regarding Flint - Have you, guys, seen The Great Big Pseudoarcheology Debunk by Professor Dave Farina? It's like decoding the gurus on steroids ;))

Matt Dear

Rogan is a cunt.

Amy

Excellent analysis, as usual. I’ve found Some More News is a bit dodgy on topics I’m more familiar with so I’m not surprised by what you found. One thing I want to note for the colloquialism, “higher up on the totem pole”. Totem poles usually have the more important figures at the bottom because they’re easier to see. You two aren’t North Americans so I’m not judging, but it’s best not to use that saying. https://www.ictinc.ca/blog/debunking-misconceptions-about-first-nation-totem-poles

George

The Chris Williamson Rogan bit about criticism is classic Bad Faith actor bullshit. Such a trump card excuse to negate any form of criticism by saying it's in bad faith. Such fucking bullshit
