SHOUNAK SARKAR

Oh and another thing. Why does Harris always receive the benefit of the doubt when it comes to racism? Dude constantly says racist things like “London has fallen to Islam” and how the British saved Indian women by ending “Sati”, completely ignoring Swami Vivekananda’s contribution. There’s hundreds of other examples like the profiling debate, race-IQ science etc. He’s a bigoted arrogant POS! Harris’ fanbase is mostly white, atheist edgelord men. I’m not an Atheist but most of the non-white New Atheist / Skeptic people i know offline and online revile Harris. And he’s 100% a fundamentalist & dogmatic in his thinking on many topics.

Parsnips so underrated - throw a couple steamed parsnips in with your potatoes to mash!

Funny how Peterson has been reduced to “1 Christian vs 20 Atheists.”

Isn’t the story about a recovering alcoholic finding god as old as the bible?

@matt, the quote that Rogan was referencing from Terence McKenna was not making the point that you think. Joe had it right. McKenna was a huge critic of scientific rationalism/ materialism from a kind of psychedelic new age point of view. He was indeed using it to undermine the project of modern science by pointing out the absurdity of the singularity. McKenna was the prototypical secular guru. That's why I've mentioned him several times over the years as a candidate for decoding, maybe as part of a "gurus of yesteryear" series or something. So much of the modern online guru landscape can be traced back to talks from McKenna from the 80s and 90s. We would not have Rogan, Vervaeke, Peterson, or even harris without him.

4 minutes in and I am soooo making that stew. Edit at 6.30. Cabbage my god no. Edited again at 28.30 to add I just told my 12yo about Rogan misunderstanding the science miracle quote. He said "so he chose the dumb option".

Frances Sebesta

Loved your Irish Stew recipe but my Irish mother cooked it regularly and never once did she include anything that would add interest and flavour to the combination of simmered lamb, parsnip and potatoes (maybe she added salt, sorry mum). Perhaps we just had the Protestant version of the traditional recipe. I gave up eating lamb until, as a student, I shared a house with a Greek Australian. Then I was introduced to garlic and finally appreciated the magic of cooking.

Matt Dear

Joe, do you like Owls?

JimJamSlammer

Spoonful of vegimite is the flavour equivalent of half a can of Guinness

Philip Grant

The guy telling Peterson "you're really quite nothing!" is simultaneously both slightly childish and deeply, deliciously satisfying.

Tom Allison

Definitely „Wooster“ - has this been cleared up already?

Herr K.

I don't like Professor Dave, and I think it's a shame that people like Flint and Tim Nguyen associate with him. He made laughable errors in his recent critique of Terrence Howard which made him sound like a crank. He is the kind of debunker that Eric Weinstein accuses Mick West to be. I wish there were more people like Mick

Kit Zullasson

"Sippin' on my Irish Stew" is for the day after "Sippin' on gin and juice"? Although Matt seems to be able to combine those things.

Frances goulart

Who made God? Who made Vegemite? Secrets of the universe. Humbling!

Oh the irony of Peterson claiming that he wouldn't have made the incremental mistakes along the way, so he would never be in the hypothetical situation of having to lie to save someone's life, when he was one of the midwives that helped birth MAGA, which is now grabbing people off the street without due process and sending them to El Salvadorian prisons

livintheilife

I adore that scene from Life’s Too Short. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. That, and Bowie serenading Gervais in Extras.

Jacob_3BP

Hahaha, I posted this before, but since Jordan Peterson at Jubilee reminded @Chris of Liam Neeson in Life's Too Short... When I listened to it previously I was actually reminded of David Brent in The Office, doing the customer service training. Trying to win every interaction on a technicality. So he'll go "there is no room 362 in this hotel" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-wfO6_eq-A (Also, noting that Jordan going out of his way to not have to lie to Nazis about hiding Jews is acutely self-aware of him... wink wink...)

CronosWasRight

I feel like the concept they were circling around with Sam Harris is his inability to pass the ideological turning test, he can't accurately describe the reasoning of someone he disagrees with.

Tobbe lobben

The reason why I would believe Sam is a racist is because he says a lot of weird shit. Not because of anything Ezra said.

brianshmrian

Regarding how to handle hypotheticals... There's an episode of The Office where the question comes up, "Would you steal bread to feed your family?" Dwight answers, "It's a trick question. The bread is poisoned." And Michael answers, "I wouldn't steal the bread. And I wouldn't let my family go hungry."

Efrem Zecarias

I don't understand Harris. 1. He wants to preach that racials groups are biologically different in intelligence. 2. He doesn't want people to call him racist. What does he thinks racism is? Are you speculating on the genetic capacities of racial groups? Are you claiming that blacks are genetically less capable then whites? Yeah, you are preaching racism. Just wear it. Why is he so offended when people take his polemics in offence? Racism includes racializing science (or attempting to adding scientific prestige to racism), that is what he is/has preaching/preached. Ezra was taking Harris at his word. sigh. Is the fragility of his self-perception so sacred? Well perhaps to himself, but his ego is not so sacred to me.

Rosemary and thyme would be the base herbal flavours Basil is a warm weather growing herb.

CHUSSTERR

The whole "i would never put myself in that situation" > I would have killed Hitler joke reminded me of the clip of Eric W claiming he met Jeffrey epstein and Eric knew he was evil before everyone else.

Linda Sears

It’s so odd to me that Jordan claims not to do hypotheticals, yet he hangs out with the kings of hypotheticals in the form of the sensemakers. Not to mention he delves into the mythos of the Bible at every opportunity. How is connecting modern day existence to an ancient text not, to some extent, engaging in hypotheticals? “What if you were Job, and you felt abandoned by God? Now we can learn something from his choice not to curse God.”

Nancy Hale

I suspect that some of the atheists in the jubilee were, like Danny, disappointed that they didn’t get an honest-to-goodness professing Christian to debate. Expecting William Lane Craig and instead getting waffly Jordan P.

Idan Ca

Imagine if Peterson’s first name was Christian… “Are you a Christian?” “I’m Christian” “But are you a Christian? Is it not one Christian vs 20 atheists?” “Dont play games with me boy”

Eric Ireland

I felt bad for Rogan’s guest who thought his dad came back as an owl. Considering all the other bs Rogan goes along with you’d think he’d humour him out of compassion..

Frances goulart

Anybody want my recipe for Buddhist Irish Stew with cod? No Vegemite???

When I am in the mood for smart funny snarky and a can box or package of DTG isn’t on the shelf, I watch another episode of HUSTLE. Late great departed tv series... Free now on YouTube. 10 stars! Which is what I give DTG. Any other fans out there?

Love the addition of the Life Too Short clip 😄 🤣

scottymfg

Rogan demonstrating one of his most annoying traits here (that he shares with Piers Morgan). It seems that if someone can't explain a complex idea to him in a 5 minute podcast clip, then then that idea is beyond comprehension full stop and whoever is conveying it should be treated with suspicion. It's like the idea that you might have to read/study/think to understand something is completely foreign to him.

Ryan Bruno

Chris says something here along the lines of “Sam Harris takes an ‘extra step’ and says that if you disagree with me, then you just don’t understand my position”. But sometimes that extra step is assumed. Saying “if you disagree with me then you dont understand my arguments” feels different than “there is this common criticism of my views and I actually don’t hold that view… let me explain” This doesn’t strike me as the same thing as Jordan Peterson squirting ink and claiming not to hold a position he obviously holds (and demonstrably holds in other contexts) just because the other person is sticking to a definition that is clearly stated. I think for Sam Harris to be doing the same thing, he would have been satisfied with himself in just calling it a misrepresentation. But in the case of his latest article, he was pointing out a phenomenon that it is kinda interesting: That conflicts of similar magnitude aren’t treated the same in the media who claim to be arguing from values that should equalize the two conflicts. The fact that it doesn’t suggests bias. I think this makes sense. Am I stupid? I think what is annoying about what-aboutery is that people sometimes use it to deflect from a main point that your interlocutor is making. If he was in the middle of an argument with someone and they were pressing him on his thoughts on Palestine or his disagreements with Israel, and he just kept bringing up the holocaust, then yeah i agree that’d be annoying. Sam Harris just seemed to be pointing out an inconsistency in media coverage, all the while acknowledging that Israel’s response has been catastrophic and comparing Netanyahu to Trump. Basically, I think Chris and Matt 1. have a low tolerance for gurus or pseudo gurus defending themselves. 2. to reduce every argument and into a handful modules even when they don’t fit. I think they can be more careful about nuance. But I also understand that that is a difficult habit to get into when you are spending your time criticizing people who are actually very intellectually simple lol

Matt Dear

jesus christ Joe Rogan is so fucking stupid.

Matt Dear

The owls are not what they seem

Mike

Was Joe Rogan always this stupid?

Ben

Woodrow Wilson was cognitively incapacitated for the last 2 years of his presidency after suffering a stroke. The Biden situation isn't this huge unprecedented scandal people are making it out to be or the worst case in presidential history.

Dean

How much weed has Marhew smoked?? How often does he still partake?? His memory is atrocious!!! "Oh fuck! I forgot the bay leaves." "Oh shit! I forgot the tomato paste!" "What are my dogs breed again? I forgot" 🤣 It's not the first time ive noticed his memory might not be very good.

Re: the Charles Murray/Sam Harris/Ezra Klein bit. Despite the fact that Murray has a misplaced interest in looking into connections between race and IQ in the first place, what are good examples (publications, interviews, etc.) of him displaying what is wong with him and why Sam shouldn't have given him a platform/being more critical of him?

RareTripleBait

Nice to see Chris contextualised in long form here

Debra Hotmer

Re: JP’s comment,” I would do my best not to be in that situation”, it’s actually one of the rare times where Peterson DOES answer a question. His statement , put in other words, states that he would not be hiding any Jews in his attic, basement, or anywhere else for that matter. He would not be trying to rescue anyone. In this exchange between Peterson and the questioner, it frustrates me that the questioner did not catch that and immediately and ask him directly if is that is what he’s actually saying without saying it

David

Why does Sam Harris say “slime” so much lol. Just a weird phrase to latch onto. “He slimed me” or “Ezra threw so much slime” like where did he get this from and decide it is his favorite phrase

Steve Edge

Rogan the Christian.......

Purple_polish

Genuine question: does anyone listen to Rogan because they think he, himself is particularly knowledgeable or insightful? I thought the whole point was the guests he had on, and that the format lets them go into more depth on their ideas. Also, the more of these clips I listen to, the clearer it is what a massive self-absorbed prick he is. He just comes across as deeply unpleasant.

Paul Bowman

Maybe its the effect of listening to the Buddhism book (which emphasises the vast gap between the doctrinal niceties and most lay people's experience of the religion), but Chris' point about a 'certain type of atheist' finding fundamentalists more amenable ("because at least they actually believe what they say they're supposed to believe in") struck a nerve. Particularly in relation to SH's utterly unshakable belief that the only way someone can disagree with him is because they haven't understood his thinking. Which is unquestionably infallible in a way that mere popes can only fantasise about. Because this is the way a younger me used to think. I recognise this kind of cognition. Which is more common amongst us neurodiverse types, but I don't think you necessarily have to be on the spectrum to have this kind of "dogmatic" thinking. I put "dogmatic" in scare quotes because I'm doing that thing that Matt really loves, tweaking an ordinary word to give it a special meaning. (Actually, hopefully not that much). Dogmatic in the sense of a scale where Jordan is almost at the other end of the scale from Sam, within the guru continuum. Not in the quantitative sense of the intensity of belief, or unwillingness to budge or listen to countervailing viewpoints (here Jordan and Sam are equal in their guru imperviousness to any suggestion they might be wrong). Rather in the quality of those beliefs. Jordan has strong affects and prejudices, and the rest he just improvises. Like the sensemakers, he equates manufacturing deliberate category errors, absurd wordplay, puns as insights, etc, etc. But his initial gambits are so half-assed and rationally slack, that any self-respecting dogmatist would be mortified to ever be caught saying something so un-thought-through. A true dogmatist not only sees the world in black and white categories, in a universe where the law of the excluded middle reigns supreme - either a thing is so, or it is not so, there is no third option - but is over-invested in the project of discovering truth through rational thinking alone. If a religion has doctrine (spoiler alert, usually restricted to a small group of dogmatists) then that, in itself, must be the essence of the thing. There couldn't be any other, more social reasons, that lay people would involve themselves in the community practices around that.
