In this medium-decoding episode, Matt and Chris turn their attention to an unlikely venue for cutting-edge theoretical physics: Piers Morgan Uncensored. There, Eric Weinstein, renegade genius and uber guru, squares off with Sean Carroll, an actual physicist and popular science communicator, in what might generously be called a “debate.”

Eric brings his usual mix of sweeping historical revisionism, vague technobabble, and performative outrage, complete with a conspiratorial tale of how physics was hijacked in 1983 by a single lecture and claims that Eric discovered the Seiberg-Witten equations. While Sean Carroll does his best to explain how scientific research works and why appearing on podcasts is not equivalent to peer review.

Expect the usual contrast: one man earnestly trying to summarise complex scientific topics; the other insisting he’s been silenced, misunderstood, and ignored—despite being on a major platform doing all the talking. And just when you think it is over, prepare for Piers Morgan's ultimate argument for God...

Triple chin neckbeard

Eric was torn limb from limb for fun at the UChicago economics department. Invitations can be done for many reasons!

SHOUNAK SARKAR

“It’s like a squid excreting ink and retreating back into the rocks” is my second favourite Matt saying now after the classic “hierarchy of morons kissing each other’s butts up the guru food chain” 😅!

SHOUNAK SARKAR

I think we witnessed a verbal & intellectual murder live on TV btw. Sean Carroll was magnificent. Eric is such a fraud, crank & mountebank. Also OMG, Piers Morgan is so vile. A thin skinned, arrogant dim witted enlightened centrist shock jock!

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2025/05/adam-riess-hubble-tension/682980/ Did anyone else read this article? It discusses something called the bubble tension which other amateur appreciators of physics might be familiar with. Martin Riess won the nobel prize for measuring the expansion of the universe by studying exploding stars. This was posited to be due to dark energy. But calculations of the expansion of the universe using different methods shows a large discrepancy which according to the Riess suggests the standard model might be incorrect. He blamed physics not filling contending with what that means of the sociology of the field. I didn't expect to find support for Eric in this article lol "Riess grew visibly exasperated when we discussed these objections. He blamed them on the “sociology” of the field. He said that a clique of cosmologists—Spergel and “other graybeards”—who work on the early universe have tended to dismiss conflicting data"

Did anyone else hear Eric saying “it’s a classical music” and then correcting himself at 1:38:45 (or thereabouts). His explanations about physics were already baffling without bringing in classical music to confuse things further

Ben Godek

I think Eric is a quantum object himself. He exists always in a superposition of states. He’s an outcast from physics, but also everyone agrees with him. He wants to be Sean’s friend but keeps insulting him. He’s incredibly confident in his own ideas, but not enough to publish them.

James P.

I'm sorry. Wtf is wrong with this guy. What an insufferable prick. The shamelessness of these people is truly a super power. That anyone listens to him and finds him appealing is so black pill.

Philip Grant

Just like until recently the kilogram was defined as the mass of a platinum ball in a vault in Paris, the Gurometricians should encase a looping video of this encounter in glass as the definition of 5/5 grievance-mongering.

livintheilife

Sean Carroll makes an heroic attempt, but nothing can escape the event horizon of Weinsteinian grievance!

Chris Wishy

Does ‘Gaslighting’ need to be a new category in the gurometer? Seriously, I really feel for Eric’s wife. The day to day would be a living nightmare.

Matt Francis

I hope everyone realizes how lucky we are to be watching the undisputed GOAT (Eric) in his prime. A bit before my time, but I imagine listening to Eric “dismantle” Sean Carroll is what it felt like watching Michael Jordan play basketball in the 90s

Empty_Cognizance

Am I wrong in thinking that Eric's fantasy of being redeemed in the future once super-human AI can even get a glimpse of the Weinstein-ian North Star that had been burning brightly centuries prior, is much like Lex's curious, bright-eyed, skipping schoolboy full of wonder who is NOT asking blatantly stupid, naive questions to world leaders but is actually the REAL genius in the end…?

Linda Sears

Eric’s “you really have a problem with dark energy” to Sean is true if we define Eric as being dark energy.

George

Eric's response to Sean at 1:20:37 is some of the most infuriating stuff ever played on this podcast. The hypocrisy, the double standards, the thin-skin, the narcissism, the spite. I just don't understand who falls for this shit. Good god it is frustrating to listen to

Salex

I’m addicted to cringe, but I may overdose on EW. Pure, undiluted bullshit

Melinda

I just made an "ugh" sound that made my family think I had physically hurt myself - when Eric said we can be friends when you come to understand my musings.

Jonathan Cano

Piers Morgan: "The tides go in, the tides go out -- you can't explain that!"

Jill

Sean Carroll owned him big time

Jimalim

After he pointed out that Eric’s paper is a draft work-in-progress of entertainment, that may not be built upon, the debate should have been over. Wtf.

Darth Zoidberg

Triggered Eric is a pretty enjoyable sight

Julie🇨🇦

“He’ll get in an infinite loop and maybe explode “. Good one Chris. 🤣 I wish…..

Guy Walter

Any interest in briefly discussing Jesse Armstrong’s new movie Mountainhead on HBO Max? Very much inspired by the All In podcast and the valid utopianism of tech bros.

milkgap

wow. going against horrible guru Sean really brought it out of Eric, eh? the desperate need for validation from Eric and the ridiculous bullying of him and Piers. this really showcased how gurus just use interpersonal games and tricks to make themselves feel relevant. at least Eric knew Sean was into cocktails, that was nice of him. more effort than Piers put in.

CHUSSTERR

I think the most wild part is that so many people feel like they can relate to that kind of behavior and feel emboldened by it

Rasterisk

What would you say if, at some point, those AIs then got to that paper and said, “holy cow, that is exactly what we’ve been missing, this thing solves all sorts of problems, and the problem that we have is that Eric Weinstein is actually Michael Myers from Halloween”?

Agnieszka Z

Much as I love my Weinstein hathos, did you guys see Eric’s video response showing that the paper actually has the sections that Sean says it does not?

Ema

This was very funny. But I got a little depressed at the end. While I agree it was good Sean went on there, if the media and public had a clue those two would never be on the same platform. Watching science influencers become more and more of a thing for the last few years, with so many inserting bad science, anti-science and woo. The dishonest ones always have an advantage because they dont have to work as hard and can taylor the story to pander to the audience. And now with all these cuts to real science...

Tobbe lobben

Eric please you need help get help.

Matt Dear

Genuinely though, why do people like Eric, or listen to him? He is just a whiny little bitch.

Matt Dear

I can understand why Piers thinks there must be some kind of superior being out there, considering he's surrounded by them at all times.

CrystalJade

I really enjoyed this. It’s like a psychoanalyst’s dream. So many concepts! Every repetition embeds difference, yet it amounts to repetition because its structure is recursive. Weinstein projects an imago of being distrusted. All of his words are in service of this self image. Morgan identifies with this in part, whereas Carroll sees this so clearly and says why it’s not really a matter of distrust. It’s more disinterest in the absence of a reason to be interested. I really like Sean Carroll. He really was the antidote, or maybe even the anti venom - I’m not sure.

Pobskill

I do think Sean messed-up in his initial response to the God question. It came across as rather smug and glib, 'i'm glad to be the one who frees you from your religious convictions..' also 'buy-my-book', exactly the sort of atheist gloat that plays into the hands of the Roganosphere narratives. The 'north of North' analogy seems much more useful here, which is probably why you try to wishfully retro-fit it, along with a more standard theory of the beginning of space-time. I can't really fault Sean though, in this company I would have cracked within the first 30 seconds

David Rutland

Matt, you're the psychologist, does Eric (and Jordan Peterson) appear to you to have some mental-emotional problem? Something seems really wrong with both of them.

Curtis Kofoed

I know you can't only cover the Weinstein brothers but it is critical that DTG continues to do so because episodes like this are the kinds of things I absolutely love.

Richard Upton Sinclair Lewis Pickman

At the beginning of Sean Carroll’s AMA that just came out he mentions the appearance with Weinstein. He did say a couple things like “this is why I don’t usually do this,” and, “not that I’ll necessarily ever do this again.” 😂

Catzeine

Man this gave me a hankering for more Weinstein coverage! I've listened to ever single episode and I can't get enough.

Dries T.

Sorry if this has been said here several times already (too many comments by now to browse through), but my god what a nasty trick to make us listen to Eric's steaming pile of nonsense about time travel several times. Good job it was also funny, but I genuinely feel a bit violated there...

Sue Fricke

I don’t like how i feel in my body after listening to Eric.

Bobby Wayward

What a pathetic little boy Eric is.

Amy S

I wonder if Sean will hear your take on this.

Amy

This whole time I just kept wondering why on Earth Piers Morgan cares about this, of all people.

Amy

I’ve watched lots of Dr. Ramani videos on narcissism. Eric Weinstein is a textbook covert narcissist. I don’t think she knows who he is and yet she’s described him to a T.

James Lucas

Whenever it's a Weinstein you know it's gonna be good

James Lucas

'How dare you?' I joked on my breakfast laughing out loud

Cautious Dissolute

This is the first DTG I've been unable to listen through in one seating. I can't bear hearing Eric speak for too long

Steve Edge

I actually felt a bit sorry for Eric here..... What is Eric's reality its clearly off kilter.

Karen 🇨🇦🇺🇸

Eric does a thing I call “making up stories and hurting [his] own feelings”
