I was excited for a long episode as I have to pack up for a move and thought this would be good entertainment but my god is listening to McConaughey excruciating 😩

Elissa

Must…try…to….finish……..

Nina J.

Man, I finally made it through this, and I think it may be the funniest DTG episode ever. Enduring three hours of cringe was well worth it just to hear Matt say, “and three percent of us are having sexual dreams about Africa and then going to Africa.” Also some good insights in there, of course. Well done! My final thought as a former addict is that selling drugs to addicts actually makes more sense and might be less morally repugnant than selling whatever this shit is to unhappy people (or really anyone), because at least in that scenario, the customer gets what he or she paid for.

‘Sales is love, sales is service.’

john statham

The Mattrix/Matt MaConningme road trip sounds wonderful.

john statham

Just put a review on Spotify and Reddit.

Níall

The over the top positivity is so vapid. After the initial high of the bongo section, it's very boring source material

Jarod S

An hour and 15 minutes in and I am in pain listening to this. This would be torture if not for you guys' riffing.

Melinda

Well. That was quite something. DTG GTD.

Paul Ditta

I think I want to publish my own self help pamphlet. “No One Cares: How Shutting the Fuck Up and Getting on With It Can Lead to a Better Life (Or, at least, one where you aren’t wasting my time.)”

Fran Diamond

You guys!!! Could not stop groaning at this- the canned crowd noise, the bongos, the dramatic reading of comments, sales = love. Oh and just tell yourself to stop be overwhelmed. Good advice! Just too much I would also like you to know that I spent five hours working on this comment. And I had a meeting and a work session. So the time I put into it is indicative of the quality and value to you. That’ll be $397 please

Have Matt and Chris listened to the audio-only version of this? Because without video, the first hour sounds like a narcissist fapping along to his own villain arc. Still 2 hours to go...

Bernt

Self help gurus have to be some of the most narcissistic folks on the planet.

Bernt

My favorite part is listening chris butcher the pronunciation of the paid subscribers

Lord Brannigan-7

I thought it would be the weather that would ruin my holiday on the west coast of Ireland but no, it's the time I spent being voluntarily heckled by MM!

Neely McCormick

I was one of the listeners that encouraged a look at MM. i am barely i to this episode and I’m not sure I’m going to make it to the end. It’s like he’s doing the Tom Cruise character in MAGNOLIA. Holy shit.

PuffyLowe

As a North American I find this crap as cringe as you lads.

KBDaxio

I love DTG but I can’t get through this one. It would be easier to listen to 1.5 hours of Matt’s Mr Squeaky Chair followed by 90 minutes of Chris complaining about it.

Kevin Nyberg

If you made a drinking game out of McConaughey’s hand rubbing and clapping you’d be dead in 15 minutes.

Purple_polish

I was loving the juxtaposition of droll Chris and Matt against the inane, happy clappy self help drivel (cut from heart felt poetry reading with backdrop of emotional, swelling music to Chris's "Yeah, so there's that kind of thing..." absolutely killed me). Then we got to the sales pitch, and I got so, so angry. My parents were for a while big-time into Tony Robbins in the late 90s/early 2000s, and absolutely none of this shit has changed. It's the same grifters, with the same scams, charging inordinate amounts of money, although have to say, their prices sound cheap compared to the $10k apiece seminar fees that Robbins used to charge back then. Also, results are not the point. What they're really selling is an emotional experience, where you feel total agency, endless possibility, and an emotional high, which usually leads to a crash and depression and brings people back to yet another seminar to recapture that feeling. Please do a Tony Robbins episode! He's basically a crunchy antivaxxer as well which should be right up your alley.

Heidi Sævareid

I was listening to this on speaker, but when I realised that the audio might be reaching my neighbours or passers by through the open windows, I quickly went and got my headphones! My main worry wasn't that I was bothering them, but that they would think I was on a self help Zoom call! On another note, I'm struck by how similar this was to a service in an evangelical church! I spent some rebellious teenage years in a pentecostal church, and this was definitely the same vibe. Even the "humour" is the same! "HAHAHA, LET'S ALL ADMIT WE'RE SINNERS, RIGHT? IT AIN'T EASY!!!!!!!! HAHAHA! But ....!"

Jens Møllerhøj

surprisingly tough listen. Not sure what this says about my psychology, but I think this was the toughest one in the entire catalog. I listened to dr. k manipulate his patients. To scott adams cynical laugh. but this one got under my skin in a different kind of way

Dial-1-2-enter-in-2-diaLOGOS

It was also a bit sad, though I couldn’t help but laugh when he announced everyone’s problems over the drums and guitar music. While I agree with the general observation that this felt like something out of an evangelical megachurch—minus the faith element—I also caught a distinct whiff of a wacky corporate motivational seminar. The whole thing is clearly staged, and I’m genuinely saddened by the number of people with real psychiatric or addiction issues who attend these events.

Kyle Dun

Finally got to this one. In a word, cringe. Not the lads, I mean the content.

Scott Grande

This was very hard to listen to.

Elissa

30… more… minutes …..

Cynthia Savit

I could be convinced that this was a Christopher Guest “This Is Spinal Tap” type mockumentary. Thanks for the laughs, one of the best episodes.

Elissa

Okay … sigh … if Chris doesn’t interrupt me with his live feed crack cocaine , then I can finish my MDMA McConaughey . Nothing I can assure you, will get me to start actual work on time today

Portimex

Sometimes it's a nice change of pace when you turn your attention to the lowest hanging fruit. Please don't forget to do this now and then. It's fun

Mike

Given that just a few unmuted people on a zoom call can generate ungodly feedback, imagine what it would actually sound like if that applause and cheering was authentic!😬

Idan Ca

I think what makes this episode bearable to listen to is how much fun Chris and Matt are clearly having

Joanna Go

I thought Chris Langan was the gold medalist in the Grift Olympics, but turns out there’s a whole underground league I never knew about! BTW, have you seen Professor Dave’s ‘Guru-meter’? It would be cool to listen to you three to talk about it :)

Lys

Yet all I can think listening to this is that these guys are all millionaires. If it was about true altruism they'd be giving these talks for free. His isolated claps are making me laugh.

Kgar

Holy shit. Is MM a victim here? Was he ‘sold’ by Robbin’s and the other goofball? Is there no one in MM’s life to say ‘duuuuuude, these guys are using you’?? This episode gave me many many smiles. And all of my friends and family were thankful that my grouchy self was suppressed for a few hours.

Kgar

I dont think I can watch MM in an acting role ever again

peta austen

at least 2 mill??? I'm sure it was more than $10 to join, but even at that price, that's a pretty good pay day. I dint think I could watch MM in anything in the future. Ego driven beyond compare

Jacob_3BP

What bugs me about Matthew's wet dream, is that he says the only geographical identifier is the presence of African tribesmen. Yet he's in a river with crocodiles, piranhas, sharks and anacondas. Which *has to be* the Amazon river. Seems more likely he misidentified the tribesmen and he went to Mali for no reason, than that all these species were in Africa somehow...

Sue Fricke

This is like a re run of the old Marvin Oka, NLP workshops with little “anchors” infused into meaningless drivel - the hand rubbing, hand clapping and the bongos. Manipulating the audience with long form fake emotion and meaningless insights set to music like a movie. Except -way way worse.

Sarah S

I keep thinking he is hitting his chest ala The Wolf of Wall Street

Jake

Damn, 2:40:00 in with 00:40:00 to go. The value / $3 ratio is off the charts, thanks guys. I, too, would much rather watch the jaded and cynical than this positivity gospel hell. The fake audience applause was so bad that I wonder what people in the zoom call were thinking. You’re doing the lords work boys and it also sounds like you got a lot out of this. So success all around and isn’t the real lesson why charge $3 when you could charge $6, $1000?

Jill

Insufferable patronising has been … especially when he SHOUTS OUT LOUD 🥺😞

Jill

Aha I get MM’s problem ! I’m a multi millionaire with upper middle class guilt … we can all relate to that !

Steve Edge

Sales is love..... Wow that did particularly blew me away.....

Dr Weevil

I’d be very surprised if there isn’t an immediate upsell on the other side of the $397. Some kind of: ‘inner circle’ type deal. Fascinating decoding, thanks!

DudeNah

I’ve been binging this pod feed while puttering around my apartment this week and I am SO EXCITED for this one!
