OMG, old mate Gary really showed his true colours in that interview. The longer it went, the more you see the true Gary. I do think however that people like Gary appeal to people who might never look at graphs, but surely he's gonna lose half the target audience talking like this.

The Gary segment is both hilarious and infuriating. Such a petulant man. No I will not use data because all the data is bullshit. I made a call to action to think tanks to make data that isn't bullshit but this far they have all failed me. I have 50 million views. I was the greatest trader in the history of trading, possibly ever. I really wish I could be the one person in the world producing data that isn't bullshit but unfortunately there is literally nobody making videos about inequality on YouTube so I must do that, which incidentally is the hardest part of the campaign against inequality. Besides you troglodytes wouldn't understand the graphs.

1:18 - the rich buying up property is not about living in them! Most likely they are buying them to rent them out (some with huge portfolios of houses!). The private rented sector is around a third of all housing - owned by landlords and not all with mortgages! I don’t agree with everything Gary is saying but I think you’ve missed this point

I mean it *is* useful, or potentially useful, to have a populist channel about inequality which raises the profile of this issue, so that maybe people will cast their votes on that issue rather than for example blaming immigrants and voting for Nigel Farage. I think this is a potentially useful thing to. But "ignore graphs and data that's just the man trying to fool you" is not helpful, it's just back to square one.

And re: arrogant scientists. Yes journalists have a lot to answer for. Yes it is vibes based. But: I think it is not for nothing that these days charities who get their money directly from the public insist that the scientists they fund directly interact with carers and patients and try to explain themselves in simple terms as a condition of receiving research funds. Because scientists and science as an institution (rather than as a method) do often come over as detached and aloof. It's not very down to earth and it's a community that separates itself from the public. COVID brought that to public attention in a way that pissed people off, but it's always been true. "Science" does need to do better on that score and it is trying to, a bit anyway. Doesn't mean the lab leak is true of course.

I just googled the gini coefficient in Uk and it's clear rising, and Gary who constantly complains about taxing wealth not income. He could have hammered that point home and showed the trend line of the gini coefficient

Gary is right, you can find graphs to support any point of view. That's why he avoids them. (And the fact that he's trying to spread a message to the general public, who does NOT resonate with graphs and numbers.) You guys are looking at this too much from an academic perspective, and not a public relations one. And at the end of the day, I'd trust the person who makes accurate predictions over someone who is trying to sway me with graphs. Gary's whole message is predicated on the ASSUMPTION that wealth inequality exists. You guys even agree that it does exist! Does anyone need convincing of that? For most people it is daily reality right now. His message is not trying to convince people that the problem exists. He's trying to raise awareness of how people can work together to change it. Nothing about Gary's personality (that you may or may not like) takes anything away from the message he is trying to spread. Forest for the trees.

This is the first comment I have made here. I have been a DTG listener for at least two years, and I just joined the Patreon a few months ago. I just wanted to pass on my sincere appreciation for Chris and Matt! You two are doing such essential work for which I am deeply grateful and endlessly entertained. What actually drove me here right now was my urgent need to declare that Chris Langan instantly became my favorite guru upon hearing maybe three sentences into his wildly comical tweet in which he raged about his non-recognition by Peterson and Musk. I was not prepared for the shear ferocity of his self-aggrandizment and grievance. He is indeed a potent and uncut shot of guru-ness. Chris and Matt also seemed to be rocked back on their heels by Langan's aggressive and unabashed arrogance, which made the coverage all the more hilarious. This was peak DTG listening for me! You guys rule!
