In case you did not know, Matt and Chris grew up in hard-knock working-class circumstances. Chris was often forced to shovel coal in the winter months, ate a diet that consisted mostly of potatoes, and barely survived an oppressive sectarian conflict. Matt, while enjoying more hospitable weather and less paramilitary strife, was forced into young adult labour by a tyrannical father obsessed with stairs. After toiling for many years in the dog-eat-dog world of stair architecture and construction, Matt finally escaped, only to again find himself facing exploitation, this time in Japan, in the nascent AI industry.

Fortunately, both Matt and Chris were geniuses and so were able to escape their circumstances by going into academia. There, they were able to flourish, graduating from a variety of super-elite institutions, as they surpassed all the other entitled rich fat cat students using their hard-won street smarts.

In their spare time, they became successful world-class podcasters and unveiled the secret mysteries of the Gurus to a grateful public. Now that the guru problem has been completely solved, it is finally time that they unveil their true polymathic capabilities and take on the topic that THEY don't want them to talk about: Wealth Inequality. That's right, as we all know, you cannot trust the feckless economists, corrupt politicians, lying journalists, or anyone with relevant expertise. No, they are all bought into the system.

So ignore our inevitable detractors and get ready for an exciting foray as we...

Read some recent UK government reports on inequality/wealth in the UK and try not to gag on their (lying) graphs.

That's right, for the next Decoding Academia, we decided we would take a leaf out of Gary's book and focus on inequality and wealth, but unlike Gary, we will actually focus on looking at some relevant data by critically reviewing some recent UK government reports on the topic. This is inspired by an upcoming return to the world of Gary in what was supposed to be a special episode but has ballooned into a full-length Decoding. The source material for that decoding episode is this interview...#89 GARY STEVENSON - Economics, Trading, Inequality, Wealth, Populism, Tax, Depolarize

When doing basic research into some of Gary's claims, Chris came across two recent reports from the UK government's 'House of Commons Library', namely:

Wealth in Great Britain Published Tuesday, 18 March, 2025

Income Inequality in the UK Published Saturday, 12 April, 2025

Both are full of graphs, but are pretty short and easy to read. So we thought it might be interesting to take a non-expert but academically informed gander.

If you want to play along, both are attached to this post.

If you cite any graphs, I'll cancel my subscription.

That description... sometimes it just is more real than true, isn't it? :]

Chris/Matt's "graphs and figures" vs Gary's " it was revealed to me in a dream"

Paul Ditta

Ah, a subject close to my heart. I was dragged up in the dark heart of the UK’s filthiest inner city (Nechells. Look it up. And, I’m sorry) I subsisted on a diet of toast toppers, Cook in Sauce, and a weird sweet fizzy concoction delivered by THE POP MAN. I was at school with Musical Youth, I played The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, and I knew the hardship of having friends who lived on the 8th floor of a tower block who’s lifts never worked and always smelled of wee… All of that is to say that I am quite interested in structural inequality. Especially since my friendship group includes people who were privately educated. I’m looking for ways to be morally superior and blame all my shortcomings on external factors. Don’t let me down, boys.

Who writes this stuff 😭

Adam Sher

I know you're wrong because those documents contain graphs and were written by academics who weren't good at trading. Cope harder.

Linda Sears

I don’t know. Shoveling coal in a rainy, dreary cold Northern Ireland just better fits my vision of childhood poverty than living in warm coastal Australia working on stairs.

Hateful graphs are the new hateful facts

Daniel Hansen

Unrelated to anything said here, but I felt the need to share this somewhere: Glenn Greenwald has repaired his standing—by a hair—through his ongoing hate campaign against Lex Fridman. Anytime Fridman is mentioned, it’s with words like these: “Lex Fridman, the highly charismatic, intellectually provocative, unique thinker… that’s why he appeared out of nowhere—because of what an alluring draw he is…”

You're hiding Matt's banker heritage. He's genetically destined to support capitalist excess!

Salty John

They don't want to do it. They'd rather be writing papers and policy. But no one's podcasting about this shit and someone's got to shoulder the burden.

Graph to YouTube video ratio is unfavorable, indicating billionaire influence and corruption, 2/10 would not recommend

Glad you fixed the type in the email from hospital weather to hospitable weather. I’ve been thinking about it all day.

Also, currently working as the nurse at a summer camp for kids that costs $7,500/ 3 week session. 🍌

For a minute I was concerned I'd have to listen to more of Gary to sate my appetite for more DtG content

Adam Sher

The interview you shared was a great encapsulation of everything Gary. Plus the host gets guru points for his privilege walk and steelman discourse

Joseph Sullivan

You think that the people who make predictions, the ones that the banks trust with their money— I’m talking about the people who are REALLY good at maths— that they look at graphs? Please.

Sam Stephenson

Thank you so much for doing this work. I know you both could be chugging piña coladas ❤️❤️

alice

He was the best fuckin' trader in the world. Were you?

Can't wait for this one

What the two of you have had to overcome?! Incroyable! Can only compare it to my own strife—sharing a bedroom with a terrorist (older brother) where I suffered regular beatings and bear suffocation on a daily basis. My only respite was reading Charlie Brown books under the covers in the dying light of my flashlight. Until my brother noticed the light. Then Wham! Like you two, lucky to be alive.

Have you seen the latest Sabine? It looks like she went "Full Eric Weinstein". I can't actually watch it to check though. I look forward to hearing Chris tell me how terrible it was
