I gotta say, i am a pretty huge fan of Blindboy. The plastic bag thing may be “weird” but he explains it pretty thoroughly on his podcast. I haven’t yet listened to a Blindboy episode I didn’t thoroughly enjoy.

Rakish Tilt 🎩

Blindboy has a great podcast about mental health, autistic deep dives, guerilla history, and endearing personal stories. I've been listening to him for longer than any other podcast.

Bernt

I enjoyed hearing ross douthat being called ross dough hat. Sounds like a british insult. Hearing Chris genuinely butcher names is never not funny

Nancy Hale

Another vote for potentially decoding Blindboy and Professor Dave. I agree with Chris about the absurdity of a serious artist / intellectual who presents with a plastic bag on his head. But then there’s a long tradition around artists using pseudonyms and alter egos as disguises to preserve anonymity. Maybe this is just a visually jarring variation.

Kyle Dun

Great episode. Been awhile but 3hrs. Giving Rogan a run for his money boys. When Matt said Trump forgets who hes lied to reminded me of my mum saying, if you tell the truth you dont need to have a good memory lol

Quietscheentchen

Be honest Chris, was the editing error because you had to take out too many squeaky noises :))

Jenny

The "s" silent in Ghislaine's name so just remove that and Matt's pronouncing it correctly: ghee-lane

Unfitforpurpose

Listening to the grok chat and call me a crazed radical but maybe its just a good idea to avoid the services and products of the mad drug addicted, billionaire.

Melinda

This moderately successful podcast should come with a warning - you might get some strange looks if you're riding your bike through town laughing out loud. 5 stars for the explanation of GU as being numerology + wishful thinking. I'm currently re-learning Indonesian, so that's 2 disturbing things I share with Eric.

Mike

Eric Weinstein really is the Steven Seagal / Frank Dux of science and intellectualism. Most fascinating and accomplished man in the world but it's all secret.

Julie🇨🇦

Love these long SM’s!!! Keep it up guys!!

Joel G

Absolutely loved this from Ezra Klein’s most recent column… There’s an old joke: A conspiracy theorist dies and goes to heaven. When he arrives, God says, “Welcome. You can ask me one question. Anything you want.” The man says, “I need to know: Who really shot J.F.K.?” God says, “Lee Harvey Oswald shot him, and he acted alone.” The man pauses and then says, “Wow. This goes even higher than I thought.”

SHOUNAK SARKAR

That’s it Matt! I didn’t cancel you for the ole squeaky chair or the aquarium, BUT I’m cancelling you for your hatred of Harry Potter & Mr. Bean! Lol 😂 I jest. Jokes! Excellent supplementary episode boys. Was as long as some of your decodings!

SHOUNAK SARKAR

Btw, is Peter Thiel a fascist alien vampire? He’s such a weird dude and an authoritarian loving figure. Genuinely scary how much influence these tech bro fascists have over our lives in today’s world.

Paul Bowman

The bit about Eric W (you just know he spent his school and college years saying "...like Einstein with a W") being a master of innuendo made me think of those people who do the shadow puppetry with their hands in front of a projector beam. Eric's like the rhetorical equivalent - a master of rhetorical shadow puppetry - what he says on the surface doesn't seem overtly unhinged (at least most of the time) but the shadows of innuendo are cast into the shapes of huge scary monsters and global conspiracies. A true master of the art. Re the Epstein conspiracism - as well as disheartening to see left-of-centre podcasters/youtubers fall into this, it's deeply concerning that the leader of the House Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries, has committed the Dems to flogging this QAnon-lite shite for all its worth. Whether you're a radical or centre-leftist by inclination, this seems objectively bad for the centre-left party to be doing (rather than say, object to brown people being kidnapped off the streets into vans by masked state agents?).

“I live under a periscope. Proctoscope is really what I meant”. A proctoscope. What is he on about? The only thing visible in his rectum is his own head. He must be stopped. The psychic damage caused by his intellectual emptiness must end.

livintheilife

For anyone trying to get their head straight on all things Epstein, I recommend Douthat’s interview with Julie K. Brown.

Trees

Thiel may be a moron but I did enjoy him recounting Elon's befuddlement when confronted with obvious counter arguments. Also I saw some hate on poor "Dough Hat" here when the interview dropped, but I think he's a good interviewer. In this case he's doing the world good as well. Thiel reveals himself as a bit of a madman. I had a less online friend bring up the interview and he had a similar change in perspective to Matt's: he went from thinking Thiel was a kind of younger, gayer Koch bro to realizing he's a looney. His JD interview highlighted how quickly JD goes from eloquent to incoherent when defending Trumpian bullshit. Like he hasn't learned that if you are going to spout total bullshit occasionally, you'd better not talk too pretty or else it's obvious when you turn on the BS.

Stephen McGlinchey

To understand why Peter Thiel is such a madman, and Musk, Altman, Andreesen, and actually most of silicon valley, read The TESCREAL Bundle, a paper by Timnit Gebru and Émile Torres. Also recommended is More Everything Forever by Adam Becker. These guys aren't just rich weirdos. What they believe is terrifying. Weinstein started out with the best one. Tom Lehrer’s music is subjectively fantastic, dark, smart and funny and I would recommend it to anyone that I like

Nick Nightingale

I noticed the same issues when listening to Coffeezilla this week. Thank you for calling it out.

Neely McCormick

I just listened to a NYT interview with Julie K Brown, who is the Miami Herald reporter that broke this case. As she has always made clear and does to this day, this is not only about Epstein. This is about the 100 or so young girls and women who were coerced into Epstein’s orbit in order to provide daily sex for JE and other guests in the Virgin Islands, New York City, Palm Beach and on his plane. He also had a ranch in New Mexico where he held teen girls captive and even sequestered a young art student from NY in a house built by Wexler who was looking to build an Americana village for the rich. As Brown stated, no one individual could have created such a vast network of traffic without the aid of other powerful people and people that worked for him. Whether or not Clinton or Trump or whoever took part in this organization or not, these young women deserve to know the truth and are entitled to justice. That is ultimately why all these “files” a really so important.

Subodh Kafle

Gonna echo the people who said Matt should try Rimworld. Very similar emergent stuff as in DF

Greg

Great episode. Loved every bit of it. I do feel a bit guilty though, because I seem to increasingly enjoy listening to SM episodes more than the original decodings. I mean, I love both and I don't want to miss out on any of them. But it's like junk food vs. dinner (party) at a fancy restaurant. My cravings for the former are just stronger. Probably not a good sign. But please keep'em coming regardless. I need my fixes. Thank you

Jen

I live in Palm Beach County. If not for Julie Brown at the Miami Herald we wouldn’t even be talking about Epstein. My friend worked in the office building where he got to “work” every day and supposedly keep committing his crimes. Nobody knew who he was on our side of the bridge.

Devin Poore

Eric's response to the life advice question sounds like something Gregg Turkington would respond with lmao

Sam Leeming

"I live under a periscope"

Lucy

I just went to one of the Azorean islands. I am concerned I might share an interest with a Weinstein.

Sam

To be fair, if you open tune your guitar, like he said, and use a glass or steel slide—or even just fret it with one finger—you can definitely learn to play simple 3 chord melodies to a lot of classic rock and pop songs in relatively quick time. I doubt you'll do it in 2 or 3 minutes—it could take 30 minutes or it could take all day depending on you natural aptitude—, and it's a very loose definition of "learning to play the guitar"—but it's not as dopey as it sounds.

CJ

I'll say it! Epstein didn't kill himself! 😜

Jordan

Wonder if Matt has tried Rimworld. It's like a scifi Dwarf Fortress. I'm obsessed with it.

Matt Dear

Why is Stephen Bartlett like this, I thought dead air was a crime. He's so far up his own arse he's a reverse ouroboros.

Emma

R we making suggestions for Matt's wall? I have a giant stretched canvas of this in my living area that I get tonnes of compliments on. DWARF FORTRESS IS THE BEST GAME MATT I AGREE

m/z

If Matt likes Dwarf Fortress he should try Rimworld. lol at all gaming comments

George

That bit of Thiel lost for words by the antichrist question is so perfect. Never had there been a more perfect embodiment of the 'are we the baddies?' Mitchell & Webb bit.

Patrik Papšo

As a KCD2 developer I love hearing that you at least gave it a try haha, thanks!

Kgar

Another great episode. Thx guys. Good fun. And I’m proud to say I had never heard that Acosta quote. Bullshit Meter pegged!

Dial-1-2-enter-in-2-diaLOGOS

Just wanted to say I really appreciate the DTG approach — it’s thoughtful, grounded, and far more effective (in my view) than what we often see from voices like Dr. Dave or Flint Dibble. To me, Dr. Dave is a good example of how a dismissive or overly combative tone can end up alienating people who might lean slightly conspiratorial but are still genuinely open to rational discussion. His style tends to reinforce division rather than bridge it. I think there’s a valuable middle ground to be found — somewhere between the self-righteous debunking and the omega rule performative politeness— and DTG does a great job of modeling that. Keep it up.

DJM

You guys got it right! You said Weinstein and Epstein correctly! I knew you could do it! Thank you so much :-)

Linda Sears

Did Eric say to find a poster of tropical fruit and then visit all the places the fruit came from? I was not expecting that piece of life advice. As for the Epstein files, I think Trump should have said they were in Hunter Biden’s laptop and got deleted. That would at least mollify some of the MAGA conspirators.

CHUSSTERR

Bru eric is unhinged

Paul Sees

Finally we learn who Matt is beholden to - Big little people and their elaborate mind fortress are coming for us all.

Cole Rees

I don't think the bit about Peter thiel struggling to answer whether or not The human race should endure is particularly damning. It just seems like a social gaff to me. From this clip, it seems like he definitely doesn't want humans to go extinct like dinosaurs did. It's the opposite. He wants human beings to transform into gods or something. I'm not saying that's a good answer, but he's clearly not entertaining the misanthropic implication the interviewer has in mind--should humans die off like the dodo bird?

Da Jay SwIzzle

The "melange" critique of Harry Potter/Baldur's Gate 3 was my issue, exactly, getting along with Mass Effect - I played through because of the strong mechanics but I never loved it and stalled out for long periods on account of narrative fatigue from a world which de-compelled me, not compelled me, cause it felt like the writers just borrowed a bit of every sci Fi trope to make the world instead of really creating a dynamic new feel. I guess this might have been part of its strength, players felt comfortable In a world which felt like all their faves

Dank Sparrow

Destiny... would stream about Israel and say 'I haven't done much research' on some incredibly complex topic but then give what sounds like a definitive expert opinion I noticed it when he was streaming on Israel and when he did his stream on Coffeezilla on Epstein. DTG taught me to spot this when they decoded Rogan. Is this not the same or similar as Rogan disclaiming that he's a meathead but then give some profound take on geopolitics or convoluted conspiracies?

Frank Lantz

Matt has good taste in games.
