It’s that time of year again.

Matt’s been a good boy and suffered through hours of Gary, Naval, and all manner of eejits. It’s now time for his annual holiday in the land of sensemaking.

Last time we had Jamie Wheal, Jordan Hall, and Daniel Schmactenberger. This time it’s another dream team with Jordan Petersonand John Vervaeke coming of the bench for this ‘dangerous’ conversation.

So join us won’t you, as we head once more into extended metaphors and discussions of synonyms.

A Dialogue So Dangerous, It Just Might Bring You Wisdom | John Vervaeke and Jordan Hall | EP 532

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with John Vervaeke and Jordan Hall. They discuss the vertical dimension, proper orientation within the hierarchy of values, the normative versus the ethical, and what makes something more “real” in a pragmatic and philosophical sense. Dr. John Vervaeke is an associate professor of psychology and cognitive science at the University of Toronto. Vervaeke publishes and conducts research on the nature of intelligence, rationality, wisdom, and meaning in life, emphasizing relevance realization, non-propositional kinds of knowing, and 4E cognitive science. Jordan Hall, previously known as Jordan Greenhall, is an entrepreneur and systems thinker with a focus on the intersection of technology, culture, and governance. Hall co-founded DivX, Inc., a pioneer in digital video technology, where he served as CEO and executive chairman through its early growth and IPO. Prior to that, he was a key figure at MP3.com, helping to revolutionize the digital music space. His early career also includes a brief stint as a lawyer, having earned his law degree from Harvard before transitioning into technology leadership and investment. I guess it’s time to put my Game B hat on if I want to understand their dangerous wisdom. Or maybe they’ve upped their game, and now we are in Game Delta, in which case I’m screwed.

Frances goulart

What a pseudo intellectual circle jerk! Is this a taste of what goes on at Peterson Academy??

Sam

He makes a good point that with finite time and energy, what we decide to devote them to is an indication of what we value. Such a good point, in fact, that I had to turn the video off and do literally anything else.

Rasterisk

The verbal vomit circle jerk boys are so back! When is DTG LLC launching a Decoding the Sensemakers spinoff? 🎶

Paul Ditta

Oh my. Jordy Jordy Beep Beep is back. I’m going to have to leave this till I get back home. I can’t ruin my weekend

ChunkyLover7695

I literally have no idea wtaf is going on in this entire conversation. When they respond to each other are they genuinely understanding then responding or is it just noise...

To listen correctly please follow this protocol: First: take off your shoes. Second: Sun on your testicles. A sun lamp will do in a pinch. Third: Full moustache. Four: the only snacks will be beef chips. Five: CBD ointment rubbed right into your eyeballs. Six: vape pure youngest son plasma. Seven: Put your five side pieces on mute. Eight: cover your tattoos so they don't distract you. Nine: the bongo rhythm should be gentle, but firm, like the guidance of the father you never had. Ten: Sign up to the cruise, details at the end of the video.

Foggers

I feel these collosal ideas could be better expressed through interpretive 💃 dance 🕺

kurdelis

Oh, come on. It is not "dialogue", it is DIALOGOS! We're not peasants (or gas station attendants) here.

Joseph Sullivan

Peterson is insufferably verbose, but one thing that irks me is how he can speak in a way that is simultaneously redundant and inconsistent, within the same breath. Case in point: “the god of the Old Testament … is characterized * very fundamentally* — in multiple ways — but one of the CARDINAL ways is by being the voice of conscience.” Ugh.

iffydonatello

The most maddening thing here is that everyone in a while they make a sane point before launching off into sense making nonsense. It gives me the impression of being oriented for a moment before becoming disoriented again. (I clicked to comment here while listening to it on YouTube. The video started playing here from the beginning, and it was just as incomprehensible)

Robert Hyman

Did an AI write this episode description?

Sasa

I cannot do this. My time is too valuable for me to waste on this.

Jake

Will you be getting some decoding assistance from Hermes?

Daniel

This must have been recorded before Peterson was sidelined by “mold allergies”. It’s never the drugs or the carnivore diet, it’s those little mold spores that have done him in.

Kyle Wilson

Stoked for a jazz session

Paul Evans

At 1.75 speed I made it 30 minutes (real time) and I’m brain damaged and want to pull my intestines out and stab out my eyes. Not as bad as I expected.

Sam Hall

There’s an incredible bit at 54:00 where Jordan Hall explains that while he might not always be talking he is still participating. Yes Jordan, that’s called listening.

Ryan Booker

I’ve only seen the thumbnail. I’m upset already.

Edmund Southgate

Holy shit. I cannot believe I used to hang on this guys every word. I got off the train when all the gurus went mental in the pandemic but you guys have been the final nail in the coffin for me listening to anything JBP has to say at all. So thanks for that! 😂

Edmund Southgate

“A fount of inexhaustible intelligibility” good one 😂🤦‍♂️

livintheilife

Am I the only one who felt like this was an intervention? JH and Vervaeke attempting to help JP attend to his own self-deception, and JP just not getting it? Probably my own projection, but it amused me to read it in those terms. Apropos of nothing, my favourite quote was: “Notice that i use the length of the stick to explain the length of the shadow, and not the length of the shadow to explain the length of the stick”

Damien

This topped the All In boys. I nearly smashed the Aldi shopping trolley (Hi Gary!) before 12 minutes elapsed. Excruciating.

Ben Cribbin

Get the feeling Chris is still smarting his conversation with Jamie Wheal. Jamie was gracious but firm, Chris still brings it up.

Elissa

Christ- I got two minutes in before defaulting to reading comments. Choosing the latter, as it were, a hero’s journey through a space where we have aggregated a group of thinkers to pursue the problem of the former.

Emma

Gosh the ads are as good as the talk. I was listening while doing housework so I didn't manage to catch it 100% but I heard them asking people to sign up for some sort of religious app where they were going to do lent together? This is really Christianity 2.0!

Linda Sears

Vervaeke was getting disturbingly close to wokeness when he said “you have to wake up” around 38:25.

Hairy Adams

Well that's cleared things up

Liz Tily

This preview of this looks like a Portlandia skit.

Liz Tily

1 min in and I think I’m bailing.

Jonas Berge

I've listened for about 25 minutes now, and it's so painful. Just wanna check if you agree with me on some things. First, I think the first 20 minutes are basically a lot of roundabout talking about having a conversation. Vervaeke as always brings up the stuff about relevance realization, I'm not sure why. I believe his main idea is that having a good (whatever that means) RR leads to being more "wise" and leading a better life somehow? And that you can improve RR through "dialogos" somehow perhaps. Anyway, he always talks about it and I never get why he does that, and the whole conversation about conversations is so incredibly confusing and really not at all a good example of a good conversation. I would call it a realization of irrelevance. Then JP starts talking about christianity and says something about postmodernism. I don't think he understands postmodernism at all. First, it's not at all a movement or a coherent set of ideas, but rather a broad term encompassing several different intellectual developments about 50-60 years ago. As far as I understand, the idea that there are no longer any grand narratives (Lyotard) wasn't an ontological statement but a descriptive one, and I think JP misunderstands this. Would you agree?

Georgie

1:28:45 The big lie, McDonald's Happy Meal are not at all happy when you get them. Wait tell they find out gummie bears are not actually bears? Tears will be shed.

Michael Ball

I've never listened to any sense making material, and never will! I listen to it on you're podcast, but sometimes have to skip some of the more embarrassing clips 😅

Eric P

This one is my dream come true. Please don't hold back and take delight in ripping them a tenth one. If there ever was a time we didn't need you to play nice, it's now. I saw the original material when it came out and I just prayed on my decoder ring that you would smell blood in the water. I can hardly wait. I'm going to open a new bottle of Laphroaig Cairdeas for the occasion, I promise. Please make it 10 hours long.

Cole

Something in Jordan halls tone of voice kind of reminds me of Derrick Zoolander.

Linda Sears

I’m just waiting for the day that Peterson puts on the Big Suit and performs Stop Making Sense.

Professor Matt

Lotta people saying this is hard to listen to. Not many getting into the double-digit minutes. That’s what I’m hearing

Greg van Dyk

I'm simply not interested in what these guys have to say, but I'll gladly listen to you two tearing apart their bloviating word salad.

Liz Tily

It’s not even fun like dorm room bong hits convo, it’s like meth tweakers in your space while you’re trying to take the subway to work.

Liz Tily

Alright I psyched myself up. I’m going back in at 2x speed…

Liz Tily

1:26 in and Jordan nearly throws the F bomb!!

Liz Tily

Finished it. Omg wtf. Why are they so irritating? It’s easier to get through if you don’t watch the hand gestures.

Douglas Moore

JPB claims to not be religious on Jubilee… then quotes the Bible incessantly . What a joke of an “intellectual “

Linda Sears

If only Peterson could be hospitable to people unlike himself.

Mark Doczy

Three humorous observations, one per shaman: Hall—President Nixon resigned in 1974 and Happy Meals came out in 1979. That’s a long time to spend in the fourth grade. Peterson— his wife is exploring the difference between self will and divine will, which begs the question for Peterson what does ‘self’ mean? Vervaeke — he loves alliteration.. this time it’s: 1) origin, 2)orientation, 3) ostension. When Peterson struggles to grasp these three, Vervaeke replaces them with: 1) a stand, 2) a stance, and 3) a stare.
