Banger episode. Some thoughts: . Matt's brother is right. It's good to value beauty (a very Mishima-coded thought). . Mishima was a far-right extremist but by god could he write. I recommend this novella so hard: https://x.com/Alex__H13/status/1975718590310404559 . I'd guess you guys would agree that the 'meaning crisis' is really a status crisis (which is why men are drawn to it). Also a theme of the Mishima novella!! . I just KNEW it was Kmele before you even said it! Hahahaha

These creatures’ need for constant attention online might also correlate with their trendy chronic health problems and the involved treatment regimens. A bit of factitious disorder at a subclinical level, maybe?

i'm dissLexick

The whole psychosomatic illness feels right for Jordan. I had one, that I thought was linked to eating or more specifically acid reflux, which caused excess muscle tightness and migranes. The symptoms and the pain were very real and debilitating. However it was actually caused by stress and losing a loved one. As soon as I got a clear endoscopy result my symptoms disappeared. But I can definitely recognise the obsessive thinking patterns which contribute to the symptoms people suffer with

afaf

Yeah I didn't know that JP has/had schizophrenia. Now I actually just feel bad for making fun of the guy. Also the psychosomatic illness stuff is just kinda scary in a way.

Chomagerider

I hope I won't have to eat my words at one point but: Eric, listen, you're nowhere near important/ significant enough to be anyone's target... If you'll get shot (which I absolutely don't want to happen), it'll be some freak bullet whose trajectory was bent by Magneto to hit you in the arse.

Kelley

“Embiggens” is a perfectly cromulent word.

CHUSSTERR

The eric stuff had me rolling as always. Eric really always gives Piers exactly what he wants.

CHUSSTERR

If aliens came here and started putting people in zoos, Eric would be the model specimen.

Jacqui Beirne

I still don't know why I get so much satisfaction witnessing Eric's hubris.

Erquirk

Omg Matt, I have to say I’m very VERY distressed to hear of your humid, moldy, TOXIC Queensland environment, and now I’m severely worried about your mitochondria. Please please PLEASE perform a deep cleansing of all the cells in your body immediately! Get back to us about your experience once you’re finally SAFE

Ash

It was fun to listen to your take on Mike Israetel. But most intermediate/advance lifters already knew that his fitness advice has always been garbage, and he mis-uses the term “science-based“ to spread absolute bs. Basically a short roided up Huberman cherry picking studies and making sweeping claims

Tobbe lobben

I really don’t like the excuse for mikes PhD is that a lot of other PhD is also bad. It sounds like something Sabine would say you know like she did about Eric’s paper. Also I think you are pretty unfair to Solomon. And Mikes training advice is not that good and you can get it from like any other fitness coach with out the weird shit Mike adds.

gyrocptn

I'm so glad to hear elephant graveyard is chill and not crazy

Have a tangential experience on the health topic. Had a clear out of my YouTube subs and started to get worried about the amount of "I have cancer" videos from creators. Realised that having a lot of subs meant this was going to happen as a normal percentage of any population. I ended up watching a lot of them though, it felt like a respectful act as scrolling past felt wrong. They often were not played up for drama and were just people dealing with a sad part of life. It was probably the most honest discussions of death I have seen. These were people who lived their passions online and decided to not shy away from what was happening to them and their familes. There is something to say about the financial necessity to make video's but I'm not wanting to swing cynical on all of them. I wonder if Mikaela and Chris are trying to deal with these problems(aside from their weird health habbits) but only know how to express them in their YouTube Guru way. Bit of a ramble. If you get the chance have a look at The Puppet Nerd. He was a lovely person who made awesome seaseme street style puppets. His videos deserve to be watched again and again

Lord Brannigan-7

It's a fucking rough day when the majority of the interview, Piers comes across as the more informed, rational party. But everything is relative.

Hereforcranks

“The fact that it’s even plausible is stunning” - Brett on the possibility of Eric appearing on Piers again. But seriously. It’s baffling that despite being objectively one of the worst interview guests of all time, Eric will be on again. To me this just solidifies the fact that the aim of the guru ecosystem isn’t truth but instead relentless cross promotion and content generation. This seems obvious. Maybe one of the first things you might learn from listening to the pod. But the fact that ERIC is in this soup really makes the point. He’s incredibly uncharismatic and would never be in front of a camera if it weren’t for this weird, now very large, corner of the internet.

Surprised not to hear discussion of the purported links between right wing political beliefs and disgust / excessive concern about environmental toxins.

"(not Francis" made me laugh. Poor Francis.

Getting spiritually attacked is witch hunt vibes. Its giving Salem witch trials

People used to talk a lot about "idiopathic environmental intolerances (IEI)" and "multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS)" - mostly in the 90s and early 00s. I was reviewing content (for work) on our health service website and came across some hospital guidelines for managing patients with IEI/MCS. I had to dig through the archives and hansard to figure out where this shit came from. Basically, a few alternative health groups lobbied some MPs in the early 00s and they set up a parliamentary sub-committee to "investigate" IEI/MCS. Then they recommended our health service develop these guidelines. And it all just sat on the website, for 15 years, never reviewed again. We ended up removing most of the content due to the lack of medical evidence. I mean, I empathise - the symptoms of IEI are REAL to the person who reports them. There just but no internationally accepted diagnostic criteria or identified pathophysiological processes, or evidence-based treatment..

I found I became very committed to Stocism as I got older. Then I realised that getting older is basically stoicism, especially if your children have survived the problematic teenage years. Pleased to hear Matt use the phrase 'legend in his own lunchtime'. One of the people accredited with this saying was Christopher Wordsworth, previously of the Guardian. And guess what? His son (a friend of mine) has made a podcast about his alarmingly eccentric father. Not quite Al Murray (Which I am looking forward too) but even I am adjacent to the podcasting ecosystem these days .....

MrTom

Yippee, finally my turn to say "my guru is not actually a guru"! Chris, could you expand on what you find objectionable in David Deutsch's criticism of the way fundamental research is funded? Both that and his views on Brexit are a bit philosophical, but don't seem unreasonable if you are familiar with Karl Popper and Deutsch's view on "knowledge creation".

Beel

If my doctor handed me a diagnosis for spirtual attacks I would think thats just another Tuesday in the gurusphere. Wonder if Vervaeke and alternate pantheons might be the answer.

Scott Walkers Ghost

Thinking about the need for attention, on the Conan podcast I think of Sona and Matt as having a low need for attention, in stark contrast with Conan. They naturally don't change their behavior around famous people or on camera (according to Conan), I think that's why Conan likes them. They are a nice balance to Conan's character.

Joanna Mulvaney

i wonder if jp knows that ivermectin causes seizures and neurological symptoms at the normal dose if you take it for more than the recommended course. add that to benzo withdrawal….

Georgie

Hate is a strong word I’m curious what Kmele Foster has to say in Chris’s DM’s. Is he as insufferable as he is on the show? I agree Megyn Kelly is an opportunist and she’s teaching her protégées every FOXy trick in the book. They’re on the Megyn gravy train, journalistic integrity doesn't pay enough. I used to listen to TFC on regular basis, but now I only hate listen occasionally. They and their ilk (the Bari crowd) seem convinced that they’re superior to whatever “mainstream” media has to offer. Yes, the legacy media has its’ problems but I fail to see anything better that this crowd is offering. I’ve been listening for more years than I would like to admit only to be disappointed. The alternative media has been built on a dung pile and it’s starting to smell. That’s my rant for today.

Liam

Sometimes Matt bring something to the table for SM and Chris dismisses a little quickly 😕

Ymirsdreams

Are we to conclude that demons are a strain of mycelium? Because that's a powerful argument, I see no flaw in your logic, and I look forward to your peer reviewed article.

Ema

Im going to get a Tshirt that says "Embrace the mould!"

Melinda

Have these unwell people spoken to Gregory House, MD? It could be lupus 🤷‍♀️

Matt Dear

I think Mike Israetal is the guy who argued on Rogan that racial profiling was positive, because he always hires someone if they're Nigerian, because he thinks they have incredible work ethic

Matt Dear

"My dad's dog needs to be institutionalised" actual LOL

Andreas Singer

It appears that toxic mould is specifically targeting our gurus. No debunking, decoding or fact checking could stop them. I didn't expect that mould would be their ultimate downfall

Dave Home

I hate being so petty as to ask what Eric and Brett’s mom was like. But what was she like?

Trees

The PewDiePie gripe comes off a bit judgy to me. I get the critique of faddish philosophy or ethics, but from the clips played I didn't get the impression that he's virtue signaling. Just sharing something that makes him happy. Also what's the argument that buying 20 pairs of shoes is equally ethical to buying 1? We live in a resource constrained world with unresolved climate change. I'm glad PewDiePie is telling people they can be happier by buying less stuff.

saudadiste

Commenting to say that my sister was infected with COVID in late March, 2020. Her symptoms, while initially mild, progressed from loss of taste and smell, to severe tachycardia (208 BPM heart rate) to a 104 degree fever. This happened over a 4 week period. On May 4th, 2020, she collapsed on the stairs of her house. She collapsed again at the hospital, and her heart stopped. She suffered an anoxic brain injury. 2 months later, a blood clot was found in her brainstem, and she suffered an arterial dissection. She almost died. She has never fully recovered. An aunt of mine also had lingering weakness and neuropathy following her 2020 covid infection. I believe long covid is real, and I hope and pray people who are dismissive of it never end up with it.

Curtis Kofoed

Good lord the Erik segment is so painful. He is the most whiny cowardly little bitch on the planet.

Linda Sears

It was nice to hear y’all mention that the need to be around the “important” people can happen at academic conferences among some people. The established academics who are happy to converse with those who are just coming up and don’t have any impressive credentials make conferences less intimidating affairs.

Jens Møllerhøj

SM38, where two podcast hosts that tweets daily about culture war topics explain how they don’t want any attention. The tweets are just note taking and shower thoughts. And editing hours of podcast audio is just enjoyable work. Also, the hosts are experts in detecting self-deception…😉

Elissa

Ahoy : detecting old squeaky at 1:44:14??

I wonder what will come after spirit attacks. Maybe they’ll tell us how prayer saved them and that’s why now they’re opening a church. It’s always been JP’s dream to be a preacher and have a flock.

Kgar

If it’s a fish, then it’s a bass If it’s music, it’s bass. Clearly.

Charlie

If this podcast covered only eric Weinstein i would be ok with that. Just saying.
