In this special crossover episode of Decoding the Gurus and Punter’s Politics (https://www.youtube.com/@punterspolitics), Chris and Matt join Konrad Benjamin to discuss the tactics of modern gurus and potential warning signs to watch for. The decoders also put Konrad through the Gurometer and debate whether Gary Stevenson’s catchy slogans are genuine tools for social change or just clever ways to boost his subscriber numbers. So strap in for some guru-related dialogos as we try to unpack online personalities, persuasion techniques, and the tangled world of Australian politics. If you want to see some of the interview on Konrad's podcast channel, check it out here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwhwgEBDMEw

If this is the full interview, does that mean he says "broad brush" many more times? 😬 That bugged me so much for some reason 😆

I love how you guys talked about Gary right after defining Cassandra Complex because as you were defining it a giant red lightbulb went off in my head that said GARY GARY GARY

Had to lookup wtf a punter is

Cool interview. Let’s get friendlyjordies next and work through the full gamut of Aussie politics

I was a bit perplexed why Chris adressed the host with "comrade" on several oacations..... untill I remebered his name is Konrad.

Friendlyjordies (aka Jordan Shanks) next! He’s quite Aussie-focused, but it’d be great to see him covered.

if you need a palate cleanser guru go back to attia episode #367. he is pretty decent on tylenol/autism i feel like you didn’t do him justice covering him in the episode with huberman

MoooinkForYourSupper

Chris not disclosing the many cases of nootropic drink he received from Chris Williamson as a conflict of interest 😧

That was a really fun listen. Some very effective articulations of the problems with the gurus methods.

Thank you for opposing gambling and vaping. Gambling has had a huge negative impact on my life. I never vaped but I did smoke cigarettes. Many of my friends quit cigs and ended up with an even worse vape addiction. Keep up the good work.

I hope some of your arguments sunk in with him and his audience. I'm also so tired of everyone accepting Gary's intimation that he's rich. Konrad even slipped into calling him a billionaire. Based on the FT article Gary made maybe $3.5M at Citi including his payout. That would have been heavily taxed. Conservatively, he came out with $2M. He then went to grad school and has basically not had income aside from investment returns. If he was careful with his spending and did slightly better than market returns, he likely had $3M or so when he started his podcast. That's wealthy, but it deflates his whole "I know what the ultra wealthy do because I'm like them" argument. His finances are more similar to that of a random retired professional. Thomas Piketty is likely more wealthy than him. Also, it means his YouTube income is far more impactful to his finances than he pretends.

You guys gave solid and much needed pushback, I wouldn't listen to this guy talk alone. “Does the end justify the means?” well it depends what the end goal is, if it's growing your channel numbers (which he, much like Gary, attributes a lot of importance to) then yeah, they're both doing the right things. It's just foolish that they for a second believe they're doing this for the greater good.
