Weirdly clashing universes, but what a treat.

Colin Fardey

Seems like a really nice guy. He also has a good series called Why Does everybody Hate The English

Chris' face when Matt is talking (around 30min mark) - its either in awe of the professor or he's looking up something really interesting on the computer.

The stuff about (social) power was particularly interesting. What about a Tom Holland decoding/mini decoding? I think it's interesting to contrast him with Dominic Sandbrook, to the extent that Holland dabbles in secular guruism, Sandbrook seems to avoid falling into it at all?

Good stuff.

Nancy Hale

This was splendid. Al is a treat! I appreciate Matt’s comparison of the Nazi military glorifiers to Confederate Lost Cause mythologizers over here.

Al Murray's comedy side hustle 😂

Decoding the decoder’s dynamic facilitated by Al Murray 😮. Finally I’m in the right timeline.

Al Murray's podcast on ww2 called, we have ways is very good. It very well researched and never falls into polemicism.

The Battle of Britain part and subsequent discussion of Liberal vs Autocratic and Feudal regimes was really interesting and very topical. Good stuff gents

Colin

I enjoyed that very much. It was very normal and sane, which I miss, and I also liked the discussion of power & feudal dynamics being a lowest common denominator. Previously we did overcome that to a large degree in liberal societies, and maybe we will again when we get to grips with the internet. Hopefully nothing too cataclysmic will happen in the interim.

Interesting take on the myth of the German army being efficient and organized. Growing up in Soviet controlled Poland we had WWII shows portraying them as ruthless, but actually easily outmanoeuvred, even by gangs of underground teen partisans. It’s not until later, after their economic recovery that they were talked about in this “hard working, attention to detail, organized” language.
