We welcome Al Murray, the comedian who might just be your new favourite historian, to Decoding the Gurus. In a crossover you probably didn’t expect, we discuss World War II, Wehraboos, gurus, and the contemporary comedy scene — something for all the family.

Along the way we touch on British nostalgia, military fetishism, and self-styled “truth tellers” . It’s a chat about history, humour, and hubris, not necessarily in that order.

I've gone back to uni to become an org psych and "Leadership styles of the Battle of Britain" sounds like a dam fine masters topic.

I think you should give Al's Pub Landlord character a Gurometer quickie (complete with 'live' answerbacks from Al) for Xmas 🎄 LOLs.

God damn it. You’re going to make me (m,50&white) start care about ww2, aren’t you.

I’m curious, Chris (or anyone else), is there a similar hero-worshipping, romanticization, and/or denialism that occurs for the Japanese Imperial forces among contemporary people?

I actually thought Al Murray = AI version of Douglas Murray. I need a Douglas Murray Chatbot to talk to about “The West”

Ahhh, my earliest memories too are of power cuts and stories around an oil lamp and then the piles of rubbish bags during the winter of discontent. Great times!

Really enjoyed this ep. You once said you'd never be able to get Tom Holland on as a guest to discuss Dominion, but surely now you have the perfect path to an introduction via Al? As someone who loved Dominion, I would also love to see Tom challenged in the way you do so well. The so-called Holland thesis has been widely mischaracterised, and indeed, Matt appeared to do just that right at the end, although it was a throwaway line, but I think it would be a very interesting conversation.
