In this cult-themed edition of Decoding the Gurus the spotlight is placed on famous cult leader and self-proclaimed super high-IQ holder Keith Raniere. Using the finely tuned Gurometer, Raniere is meticulously assessed across various gurutastic traits, from his grandiose claims of polymathic abilities to his predilection for moral grandstanding. But is the Gurometer properly calibrated for cult leaders, and can Matt answer his own binary measure?

Join us to find out.

Let me guess, he will be pretty high up there??

Most anticlimactic episode ever. :) (I forgot you did Oprah. I may revisit it)

Is "years sentenced to prison" a factor in gurometer measurement? Do felonies make a guru more guru-esque?

Nancy Hale

Very interesting. Raniere didn’t use much conspiracism and grievance mongering as key messaging in his cult. There’s a lot of antagonism related to these dimensions that he didn’t fully exploit.

Grignard Girlie

People like this kind of act as a positive control to make sure the gurometer is well calibrated. Secular gurus seem to exist on a spectrum somewhere downstream of full on cult leaders so of course cult leaders would score a lot of 5s. Running people like Raniere through serves to validate the methodology. Oprah is definitely a guru. Her influence has been enormous!

Maybe many of the cult techniques used (love bombing, isolation, physical stress, salami tactics, cognitive dissonance, etc) *can* be used by gurus but are a separate set of techniques / skills used by cult leaders?

Roland Weber

So glad that the Gurometer stays useful after all! I guess the goals of actual cult leaders are somewhat different - more material? - than those of secular gurus.

Linda Sears

Hearing poor Matt hem and haw over those binary measures about who was a secular guru was quite funny, especially when he answered “I don’t” to Chris’s “Where do you draw your line?”

I loved how the dynamic shifted as soon as you switched from discussing gurudom criteria to doing statistics. It was like when Caesar rises up in the planet of the apes and grabs the whip from 'Malfoy'.

Do gru from the minions next
