Hey everyone,

That video I recorded late in the evening with Flint a few months ago came out.

I can't really remember what I said now, but I am pretty sure we spent a long time at the end talking about why you cannot use guru techniques for good purposes.

I'm not a huge fan of the thumbnail, but c'est la vie... not my channel! Also only me as timing did not work for the senior professor.

Decoding the Modern Guru Phenomenon with Dr Chris Kavanagh

The internet if filled with secular gurus. I've encountered my fair share, so it was time to sit down with Dr Chris Kavanagh, co-host of Decoding the Gurus, to better understand this phenomenon in our society. He describes the rhetoric, logic, and overall galaxy-brainness of these fast-talking influencers, and the gurometer, or system they've developed to categorize and rank them. What's That Noise?

I like the thumbnail. You look like a little Oliver Twist saying "Please sir, can I have some more academic integrity?" and the gurus are saying "MORE?!?"

DJM

I have to say, I dunno where the critics are coming from. Flint looks robust and brings a robust critical lens to boot.

Maytree

Sweet! Good to get the word out to his audience.

Cole Rees

I appreciate how the thumbnail makes it obvious that you are superior to the gurus. Also, the color contrast helps to downplay what is clearly the face of a bad guy.

Chris your not convinced there's a way of using the "guru" tactics for "good"? And flint is kina saying he thinks there is/all the different fields need better PR 🤔?

AJ

My only critique of Flint Dibble is that he didn't bump that banging outro track to the intro! 🔥

Beel

Always love a Flint collab with you guys

Max

I'm endlessly entertained by Chris deadpanning wildly ridiculous conspiracy positions, and Flint's face beaming with joy as he takes it all in 😂

Max

Supplement pushing might be too small potatoes for Musk, but hasn't he been sued multiple times for manipulating Dogecoin prices with public stunts on X and even during his SNL appearance? Just a grifter on a different tier I guess

Max

Having watched it through now, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it sounded like Chris you were trying to thoughtfully nudge Flint toward some light introspection about his own online behavior. Unfortunately Flint seemed to miss this exit ramp most of the time, rather responding to how academics as a whole ought to behave in online spaces. That said, I feel for Flint, as he's hounded online pretty relentlessly. In that kind of hostile space, even conceding that some of your tactics might resemble your rivals' can feel like handing them a loaded weapon... still, I hope the seeds will take root 🌱

I feel like im getting to know Flint a bit. Such a nice guy. Lovely bit of cross-pollination too. An aside: I'd never actually watched the vid of those sensemakers (Hall and.... whoever the fuck 🤷‍♂️ ... Ill check after I finish typing this. Anyway theres something about the way they're not quite successfully lounging on that massive couch that i find so... delicious. Its funny man. It adds another layer of exquisiteness. I gotta pull back man. Developing Kavanagh's Syndrome all up in this shizz.

Rich F

Flint identifying "weaponised nostalgia" (my translatio) there as a potential gurometer metric. He had taken the time to grasp the ethos of "Decoding..." My thoughts.

CHUSSTERR

Will there be an audio release?

Nancy Hale

Flint’s toned down his f-bombs from the last time Chris & Matt hosted him 🤣. But maybe he was under more stress back then. He’s got an infectious laugh just the same.😁

Ema

Really liking the section about how fast science is advancing. Im blown away by it every day. Its hard to keep up even with just the bits I needto keep up with. Also re the weaponised nostalgia, I wonder how many of the guru metrics cross over with features of fascism (or any totalitarianism if you like)?

Shug

There should be guru category: good egg

Rich F

Been trying to listen to the last 15mins or so of this and I just wanna get on the record here... the closing tune fuckin *bangs*.

It’s nice to see Flint having a good time talking with Chris. I hope he is doing okay health-wise. By the way, are the PowerPoints slides shown from the presentation you did, Chris? They look familiar.

Jen

I’m glad Flint pushed forward on the topic that has been bugging me. We need more rhetoric on the science and truth side. It was part of the Trivium and we don’t use it anymore. At least that’s what I have learned and keep on trying to learn. Agonism too, we need more Agonism. Dammit!!! Thanks, that felt good. Love you guys!!! 🪩 Flint on Dibble…tickle tickle giggle 🎶

Linda Sears

The last part where Chris and Flint had diverging views was very interesting. I found myself ping ponging back and forth between agreeing with Chris and then agreeing with Flint.

Damian McCarron

Loved this chat, you bounce off each other very well. Chris you should open up a Cameo account and test Flints celeb status theory. I reckon you’d make at least 20 quid.

Todd Houstein

How come this isn't on the galaxy brain feed on Spotify?

Ema

I have a teaching persona, but its pretty much the opposite of what Flint is describing. I mostly teach science to adult non-scientists (not uni students). And I often play dumb and make fun of myself for doing/thinking stupid things. Im very attuned to a certain type of language, that particularly often comes from women, that means they are giving up on learning the thing - that language involves any kind of assumption that Im smart. Often its like people have taken this nervous, hesitant little step towards learning something they think is probably beyond them. And any jargon or normal setback/difficulty can easily crush what little confidence they have. I do find I sometimes have to do a 180 on the playing dumb thing with certain types of men. But they are a minority. But I kind of wonder if some of the tactics Flint is arguing for might be winning people over to a position, but at the expense of teaching them how to actually assess information.
