Hail to the next decoding episode, and if you would like prepare yourself by listening to Scott Galloway’s conversation with Chris Williamson on Modern Wisdom about the great crisis of our time: MEN. Scott Galloway is a NYU marketing professor, entrepreneur, public speaker, podcaster, and recent prophet of modern masculinity, and Chris Williamson is Chris Williamson. This episode is not really part of cult season, but it does help to document Chris Williamson's lifelong mission to interview every man on Earth who believes men are in… dire peril.

Expect to hear Scott’s claims about why young men are struggling, what’s broken in modern manhood, and how father figures make all the difference. Plus: what healthy masculinity looks like according to Scott and Chris.

Should be relatively manageable compared to the Molyneux content...

What a sad sack woman I am! I have never done any big gamehunting like the rest of my sex.I have so much catching up to do! Where’s my crossbow???

Søren

I think Chris Williamson is due soon :D

Amy S

Chris Williamson is too pretty for me to take seriously. Those bulging muscles are just distracting.

Nate Brody

Oh God, these unbelievable whiners. Yes, Chris, (Williamson,) it is upon you, to make sure that every person who hears you asking for attention to the problems of young men understands that you are not asking to take backwards steps in women's rights. It will be your job to do that until your record is unimpeachable on that (but for crazy people on the internet, of course). But the good thing is that if you're just very clear a few times, it's actually not that hard to do.

Rich F

It's quite a grab-bag of stuff he's throwing out there, Galloway. It's quite densely packed. It's like throwing chum in the water to attract the fish you want to catch. Like, very, very sketchy initial impression... it's like listening to my Dad sum up all the problems with the world as he reaches into his bank of acquired knowledge and received opinions and lays it all out in a way which probably seems to him like it all flows coherently, but it arguably doesn't. It's like listening to *me* do exactly the same thing in the pub after 2 or 3 beers, if I'm honest. I'm only a few minutes deep. More later.

Rich F

War on men? Aw leave it out Chris you daft sausage. That's a title aimed at a recognised demographic. The algorithm is setting the beat for this conversation. The numbers must go up! The net must expand and the subscriber count increase! Whatever works, baby, whatever works.

Matt Dear

arghhh, Men!! 😬

Rich F

More stuff... They kind of bump up against the edges of tradwife territory, not endorsing it, but seems to be appealing to folks with a quite regressive worldview... but it's trying to appeal to a pretty broad swathe of ppl tbh. There's a nugget here and a nugget there for lots of dissatisfied guys. Kind of vague when taken as a whole. That's what I think so far anyway.

Trees

We are in peril! The man eating mold is coming for us!

Jesse Rimler

My only contact with Scott Galloway is when he went on The Town w Matt Belloni and trashed unions and the strikes in Hollywood. Pretty unpleasant guy.

Niek Vandeursen

I've only ever really listened to Scott talking about the current US political ongoings, which I think he's excellent on. The only negative thing I noticed is his tendency to make weird/crass/creepy jokes (or "jokes") which felt very out of place in the content I've watched of him. This is the first time since joining the Patreon there is a decoding on a guy I have a relatively positive opinion of but haven't seen enough of that I'm confident he doesn't have a bunch of weird tendencies. Should be interesting Edit: As an aside I saw Scott just did an episode on Impact Theory as well which might be "fun" to include based on how absolutely infuriatingly dense the host is (Tom Bilyeu).

Scott Walkers Ghost

I listened to the whole podcast, I’ll group some thoughts in the thread below. I created a list of some of the the black and white thinking from Chris Williamson: “at no point”, “this would never happen”, “that doesn’t happen”, “you have to signal”, “nobody’s listening”, “you need to do it”, “every single time”, “women will never date anyone with less status”, “anything which isn’t is less than”, “diversity has never been diversity of class”, “guys are turning to the right because they don’t feel demonised”, “a question asked by every guy ever”, “self love and high performance comes into conflict inside of everyone, men especially”, “every man just want’s to hear”, “it just sterilised all”, “select out the cinnamon men and your left with the viking raiders”

Rich F

It's so *many* tantalising nuggets. Some of these nuggets are tantalising *to me*. But it's so scattershot. So insubstantial, ultimately. As an aside, id like to know what Galloway made of the final edit, assuming he listened to it. I'd also like somebody with better production and editing knowledge to tell me if this convo was heavily filleted. I feel like it was? Like the editing after the chat is doing some heavy lifting? Or am I wrong here?

Rich F

Jesus christ the central park bit is quite appalling.

Rich F

Gets worse. I feel like Williamson is steering into icebergs on purpose. I mean I'm triggered here.

Rich F

I'm so sorry ppl. I cant stop. The bit where Galloway hard pivots from romantic rejection to "take out your big spoon and eat shit, Chris Williamson". JFC I promise I'm not making this shit up.

Rich F

OK OK. Pretty hardcore homoerotic misogyny vibes at around the hour mark. Also terrible advice from Chris W. Strange, illogical advice. Men's icks? Dude... I can't even. OK sleep now.

Dank Sparrow

Well he's far from the worst the manosphere has to offer. The title was a bit misleading low grievance mongering/sky is falling. Alot of typical manliness fare reheated and glazed with superficial empathy. Kinda cliched. About as manly and interesting as a dial tone but I think young men are having a rough go young women too but in a different way... and he didn't seem insanely toxic compared to other gurus mostly banal. Williamson looks way more manly with those guns but Scott sounds richer with the moneys.

COLOR MENTOR

My guess is over 50% of the decoding will be pointing at CW, he keeps herding the discussion to his pet topic.

Anne Stephens

Ahhh... Hmm... I'm probably just concussed...

AJ

Eleven minutes in and these two are already unbearable. Men suffer because of a "lack of mating opportunities"? They need "the guard rails of a romantic partner"? - So basically men need women to sleep with them and tell them how to think. Gotchya. Yuk. Bring on the decoding.

Paul Ditta

Well, now that I’ve had my little hissy fit. I usually watch Scott G on the Pivot and Raging Moderates. I’m watching this later, I hope he isn’t going to leave me shaking my head and wondering where it all went wrong. He’s always struck me as “Well, yeah, he’s got some slightly carbon dated takes, but he’s a sixty year old white rich guy. Fundamentally he seems to be decent, even if occasionally I might raise an eyebrow.” Ah well, that’s why I come here, to have anyone I might think is a half decent public intellectual exposed as a manipulative sociopath with stomach churn in hot takes. 🤣 The fact that he seems to know Williamson well has already taken him down a peg. But then…so does Chris. It’s all so confusing. (It’s not confusing at all.) Of course, the REAL question is, can the DTG guys unpick the mystery of Ed Elson’s bloody accent?

Sari

I didn't know who these guys were, but they're somehow less bad than I thought they would be. Which probably says a lot about how low my standards have dropped. As a tall girl, I completely agree with their "tall girl problem", though. More than half the men out there are simply too short for me to date. I think we need to talk about this more. Maybe start a podcast

Frances goulart

So bro, so bro…manosphere, please take these guys back!!!!

Frances goulart

Carry Pashminas and power bars bc women are always cold or hungry???? Give them jewelry bc they all want jewelry?? This guy is such a disgusting misogynist! Ugh.

Paul Ditta

I had to rage pause at Williamson and his “can’t I just acknowledge centuries of injustice at the BEGINNING of my career and be done with it for the remaining four decades” I’m not saying that part of the reason boys might be struggling is the shock of having to play the game on the same setting as everyone else and without cheat codes, but…there do seem to be some odd arguments. Education is geared for girls? Is it? Didn’t boys in times gone by sit for lessons? Could it be that girls are just doing well without suddenly deciding that the exact same system boys dominated when they had their thumbs on the scales is now suddenly found to be female coded? Fuck right off

livintheilife

It’s rare these days to encounter content where my reactions swing from disgust to basic agreement every other sentence. Galloway, on the subject of gender, is often good for that; I find him easier to stomach on pretty much any other subject.

livintheilife

Williamson kept trying to bait Galloway and, to his credit, he didn’t bite.

Elissa

Boys are struggling???!!??

Elissa

Okay sarc aside - is it just me or at 3 min in I’m already thinking : lemme check and make sure I didn’t subscribe to Williamson’s pod cause if so I better get way off of that thing. You know he’s cute and all, and has enticing titles sometimes… but jeeze - who opens with : doesn’t it piss you off to even have to mention women?!? This. Fucking. Guy.

MoooinkForYourSupper

CW opening with, god woke has become exhausting... Mate this isn't a therapy session. Maybe you're the one indulging in whining

Saksaas

New video title: Two horny dudes talk about what women want.

Rich F

All been a bit of a whirl. Things seemed to have calmed down in the closing minutes. Got a bit intense and rough there, but they were both into it. More tender and reflective now. Mostly bollocks though.

Paul Ditta

….and, to be spectacularly shallow for just one second. What the FUCK is going on with Williamson’s hair? Dear Chris, the 90’s are on the phone and they want their haircut and attitude back.

Paul Ditta

1. statements offered without evidence shielded with “etcetera etcetera” 2. Barely disguised misogyny 3. whining. 4. A haircut that makes me wonder what the rest of The Backstreet Boys are doing these days. Have I missed anything?

MoooinkForYourSupper

Bad stuff: most of the inflammatory "woe is us" rhetoric came from CW. Scott sticks to the message of showing men genuine empathy which is great. But assessment of men's role in society is just so scrambled. And the constant mischaracterization of women is borderline misogynistic. Talk about "listening more".

MoooinkForYourSupper

Good stuff: lovely of Galloway to promote that big brother / big sister program and challenge men to step up

Linda Sears

I’m confused by Galloway’s conflation of homosexuality with non-binary people. There are masculine gay men and feminine lesbians. I think he messed up there.

Linda Sears

One possible reason more women attend college is that there are fewer working class jobs that pay well for women. Men are over-represented in high paying trades like home repair contract workers, plumbers, electricians, heating and ac repairs, etc.

Linda Sears

Here is my hot take about the falling numbers of males attending university/not completing their degrees. Unfortunately, academia has been criticized as too out of touch and elitist for quite awhile. Young men who buy into that view may not apply themselves in college/university, seeing it as a scam and/or a lefty/feminine/elitist space that is a useless hoop they have to jump through. They may miss out on opportunities to intellectually challenge themselves in the process. So they miss class, don’t pay attention, etc., do poorly and drop out. This is just based on my experience as a professor.

Linda Sears

One thing I agree with Galloway on is the idea of a year of service for young people who are not ready for university. It should extend to non-military ways of serving the community/country. Those who want to go into college can do so if they are ready and don’t want to do the service. People who choose the service route should then get their four years of university paid for or something along those lines.

a_cryophilicus

therapyjeff on Instagram has been making some funny responses to Scott Galloways talking points, if anyone wants to check that out :)

a_cryophilicus

I like that Scott acknowledges that relationships are better for men than for women 👍🏼

Robin

I think Scott will score fairly low on the gurometer but would score high in a dubious claims/misuse of statistics category based on this video.

a_cryophilicus

I saw Scott Galloway was on Justin Baldonies podcast a few years back. Now I haven't listened to it, but I would say this adds to the growing list of "yikes" on Baldonies side... Maybe that guy needs a decoding as well?

Scott Walkers Ghost

A lot of these podcast hosts that are a bit neurodivergent like Lex, Huberman, CW and BlindBoy seem to be way over or under confident at times. There is some struggle lacking social skills etc that can impact confidence, but some people reframe being neurodivergent as having a super power, do some people take this too seriously and end up having a distorted image of themselves? Here CW has a grievance that Mee2 negatively impacted nervous guys ability to talk to women, is this just bad reasoning or is there some underlying anxiety or some other issue? This position requires both a lack of confidence like talking to women and being fearful of doing something wrong in a social situation and overconfidence in the conclusion that he arrives at. Rick Glassman is an example of someone who is on the spectrum, has his own podcast and is fairly well adjusted.

Lisel

I made it 13 whole minutes.
