In this special Christmas episode, Helen’s annual Guru Quiz returns, this year lightly dusted with Trump, podcast tours, energy drink product placement, and the unsettling realisation that the “guru-sphere” and the “political sphere” have quietly fused into a single, monetised, vibes-based organism. Points are awarded, dignity is lost, and Matt briefly considers revising for the quiz before remembering that preparation has never helped him before.

That’s right. Your regular dynamic duo are joined by returning DTG holiday guest, renowned journalist and podcaster Helen Lewis, who once again brings festive cheer, biting wit, and an uncanny ability to identify exactly who will be unbearable next year.

We also discuss Helen’s recent writing, movers and shakers in the Gurusphere of 2025, and lament the collapse of the ancient boundary between editorial content and suddenly selling pants.

The result is a festive episode about gurus, genius, authoritarian comedy festivals, and the slow erosion of shame. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night, and that includes you Bubbles!Links

Yaaaaaa!

Lord Brannigan-7

Not listened yet, but I imagine this was recorded just before the latest Walliams accusations who was Helens top mainstream>guru pick last year I think - not sure if the whole room was on board either but he's clearly creeping that bit closer. Literally. What a dick.

Halfway through reading this description, my first thought was “… did Helen or AI write this?” 😂

Penrice

Going out on a limb before I listen and putting a cheeky fiver on Chris winning.

Love Helen. A pure, respectful admiring love… I’ve said too much.

Though I see where she's coming from, I'm not a fan of her comment about Chinese tourists.... But then again, not every quip can be a winner...

Sam Hall

Had to check I was listening to the right episode when I was an hour in and still hadn’t heard any questions. Enjoyable listen nevertheless

I like Celine too. 📖 👍 Caveats as already mentioned.

I love to hear people talk about things I know close to nothing about. And this was no exception! Also the accents are on point. Cheers everyone.

Helen: That reveals something quite profound about the fact that a lot of thinking is best done in dialog Matt: Yes It's the slippery slope, as everyone predicted, once a podcast dedicated to robust criticism, is slowly but steadily turning into a hive of sensemaking. Either that or Helen just won a bet.

Bubbles called Chris one of the good ones.

Walter. Gary’s middle name is Walter. Merry Christmas! (Companies House (gov.uk)) I hope it’s obvious that it’s the biscuit concealment which is silly: not having been given the name of some ancestor itself… 🙄😅

Thank you for improving my year! Much appreciated. Bests for the season. Hope the break facilitates joy. A thought that has occurred to me is that Most of life is a 'definite maybe'

Bill Burr was the biggest disappointment of the year, your comments made me think of Dennis Rodman’s relationship with North Korea. Grim.

I always love when Helen Lewis is a guest. I did think the bit about Oriental Pearl may have been off a little, but maybe I just missed it. I know she’s concerned with tourists (of any color) causing trouble in Japan, but as for the graffiti and stickers and stuff, it seemed like she was focusing on younger generations of Japanese who have “lost their way” for whatever the reason. I could have just been injecting my own interpretation, though. Edit: I factchecked myself and she claims at about 4:35 in her video entitled "Japan is Changing" that "Most of this vandalism is done by Japanese men, a little bit of it is done by foreigners".

Can you guys consider this book for the next review please?: If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies (about AI)

What do you mean, Matt didn't expect to be covering Matthew McConaughey on the pod?! That episode had been announced for several years running. Maybe it was just that he didn't expect the episode to finally get made.

Roland Weber

Thanks! One of the Christmas highlights every year, since it's been running!😄🎄 🇸🇭 (Hey, there's an emoji with the flag of St. Helena!)

When Trevor Noah was on the Daily Show I’d get annoyed at him making jabs at American politics. It felt very “shame on you” scolding but when I hear these three from across the ponds gleefully rip into our uniquely embarrassing administration, it only brings me joy.

Absolutely love Helen. For me the best Journalist on the planet. The gold standard. Really glad you had her back on.
