Starting this month, we are opening the vault and releasing the earliest episodes of Decoding the Gurus on YouTube. This may not be useful or interesting for many of you, but some people have requested it.

Recorded before we knew what we were doing, before the format was fixed, and before the gurusphere fully metastasised into its current form. These episodes capture the podcast in its larval stage, long before it reached its present-day, wildly flapping butterfly.

Audio quality is variable, edits are a bit less smooth, and some terminology is still under development, but the core premise is there: scepticism and a strong suspicion that certain people who are claiming to be geniuses saving the world might not be exactly what they say.

Original Episode Summary

Matt and Chris introduce themselves and the overall concept for the podcast, then take a deep dive into an infamous episode of Eric Weinstein's podcast 'The Portal', featuring his brother Bret Weinstein (Episode 19). They cast a critical eye over Eric and Bret's claims that they are fighting back against the 'Distributed Idea Suppression Complex' and alerting the world to one of the greatest untold scientific scandals of the modern era.

Matt's audio is so bad. How did anyway pay for this?

This episode isn't present in the Patreon RSS feed for some reason. It is in the Apple Podcasts feed though.

More importantly, I'm checking in as a memorial to the life of ol' squeaky. Revisit the good times, when all was right in the world, before the rupture and, dare I say it, suspicious demise (I'll leave that last part to Reddit to investigate possible long distance sabotage)

I was telling a fellow DTG fan, who is relatively new to the listenership, about this episode a few days ago. I was initially sympathetic to Brett and what happened to him at Evergreen. This episode really helped me reframe how I would think about public intellectuals generally. I didn’t understand the sheer amount of content these people put out since the “everyone has a podcast” era. This episode immediately showed me the importance of knowing people’s entire body of work. I learned my lesson pretty early on. If I can learn in one ep, there’s hope for Sam. Thanks DTG. I’ve been a big fan ever since the pods inception.

Gut Daymn it those were the days. Chairs were real chairs, the coffee was sweet, Reddit had yet to classify you both as either Fascist adjacent or Soviet funded, and Jordan Petersen had yet to turn into a mushroom.

What a treat :) Back when there still was a (crumbling) divide between the Gurusphere and politics. Always a pleasure to revisit

Great. Please add a date for this in the description!

A more optimistic time, when two young men set out with a determination to end their critiques by saying something nice about the subjects.

This was the first episode I heard, and I‘ve listened to everything since. In spite of the low audio quality. That was around the time of the release of the Kendy episode. It might be fun to relisten to this one!

I discovered these two jokers when searching for someone to help me understand why Scott Adams messed with my head. After listening to that episode I started devouring the back catalog. I think I’m mostly caught up but I’m still double checking stuff from the Patreon feed versus the main feed to make sure that I don’t miss even a single minute.

Wow. The Weinstein brothers. Two meat lollipops of concentrated self regard.

These two fellas popped up in my feed at a very good time during the pandemic ... I was deep in Sam Harris land, and even slightly taken in by the shaved headed moron that is Joe Rogan. Once Chris and Matt shone a light in their light hearted but rigorous ways, the spell was broken. Thanks, guys ! Keep up the good work.

This is like CAN releasing all those crazy live shows from the seventies

Interesting that you mention Stefan Molyneux as a potential subject on the very first episode and it takes you five years to get to him.

I can't even begin to imagine how exhausting it would be to work with Brett or Eric, or have any kind of professional interaction with them.

This was a great listen as there is more explanation of ideas that now get glossed over given how often they come up. Also interesting to see how different it isn't compared to current episodes, at least in terms of the key ideas. Shows - despite the self-depreciating comments - how well thought out the ideas were and how well they had the gurus clocked.

Love hearing the guys feeling their way towards the pseudo profound bullshit category at the end
