It’s been a while since we gave people a clear look at what’s coming up, so let’s rectify that... and give ourselves a handy reminder of who and what we’re planning to cover.

Coming up, we have…

Teal Swan (New Age Suicide-Friendly Guru) [Cult Season]

Blindboy (Irish Plastic Bag-Wearing Leftist Podcaster)

Ken Wilber [Cult Season]

Ian McGilchrist (Psychiatrist who thinks everything is about brain hemispheres)

L. Ron Hubbard (Scientology Founder!) [Cult Season]

We also have upcoming interviews (currently being edited) with...

Sam Gregson and Tim Henke about Physics Populism (this will be out this weekend)

Andrew Przybylski (Oxford psychologist) about Social Media harms

And, also in the editing bay...

Decoding Academia on a recent paper comparing AI and human empathetic responses

Decoding Academia on the paper 'debunking' When Prophecy Fails

P.S. No, we have not forgotten about Michael Hobbes, but before you recommend him again. If you want us to cover him, please suggest content we can use! I couldn't find much that fit the bill. Indeed, that is often the case when it comes to suggestions. If there is no suitable long-form material, we can't do a decoding. Other requests welcome in the comment section!

Thank you, Chris! don’t work too hard 🙏

Conor McGee

I had to stop listening to Blindboy. From when he got his autism diagnosis I think he almost literally has never discussed a single topic without doing it through the lens of his autism.

Purple_polish

Have you checked out the Ultra processed foods episode of Maintenancephase? I'm a long time listener and couldn't get through that one (clearly misunderstanding study methodology, blatant motivated reasoning etc).

charlie

These all look great. Happy about McGilchrist because it sounds like (mostly) twaddle, laced with truth. But my puny brain can’t formulate the necessary argument to dismiss him, and there’s no way I’m reading his books.

George

Oh you spoil us. Looking forward to Blindboy. Got quite into his stuff a while back but packed it in as so often another recipe of word salad.

Paul Bowman

Don't really know any of the others (apart from having heard of L Ron, ovs) so be interested to hear your takes on Blindboy. I have listened to some of his stuff in the past, because he is intelligent, humane, creative and at his best, blindingly articulate. But like Conor I got quickly bored of the very indulgent introspective turn to making everything about his autism diagnosis. Also his very verbal dexterity (and guru whisper) and creativity often turns the monologues into Joyceian stream-of-consciousness poetic performances that lose sight of any goal of, you know, actually talking about stuff. Plus I have a sneaking suspicion the "I'm a special snowflake who has amazing insights on the world without having to do any of the boring research and investigation stuff" maps on rather too well to Galaxybrainedness and guru-ic narcissism. But other than those admittedly serious misgivings, still seems somewhat redeemed by being a nice lad and capable of being actually funny in ways that escape most gurus leaden attempts at humour.

Great, Iain McGilchrist coming up! 😄 I'm currently reading another chapter of his magnus opum, The Matter With Things. And now I can spot holes in his reasoning that I would have overlooked two years ago, thanks to DTG. Still, he's eloquent, mildly entertaining and rather harmless, I think.

Linda Sears

I’m most interested in the interview about social media harms since that has been a hot button issue these days. I’m a little afraid of the AI and human empathetic responses decoding academia episode. I hope humans don’t come off too badly. The paper debunking When Prophecy Fails was interesting, so that will be fun to listen to. I have no idea who Ken Wilber is. Now I’m intrigued!

Josh Davie

All sounds great! Wondered if you guys might have any interest in looking at "The Cosmic Serpent" by Anthropologist Jeremy Narby for your Decoding Academia Required Reading group. Has Chris read this already as a student? Shamanism, Medicinal Plants and the potential origin for Jordan Peterson's famous "psychedelic DNA-vision hypotheses." 🧬🐍 I'm half way through it for research at the moment and it's very readable, the cultural Amazonian stuff is fascinating, even if some of the developing ideas are best ingested with your credulity-o-meter switched to overdrive.

Great stuff. My old step-father (they split) is obsessed with Ken Wilber. I could never figure out why -- well, I could, he was super gullible despite being smart in some highly specific ways. I read the first part of one of Wilber's super big books and it seemed to make sense at the time, mostly it was about evolution if memory serves. Then it went way off the deep end and stopped making much, if any, sense. I've had a hate on ever since, as his work strikes me as one of these 'I can explain everything with my super theory because I read everything and it all fits within my system' plus a fancy colour-coded system of 'morality' that also doubles as stages of development. Except he hasn't read everything, what he read wasn't accurate, his system can't explain everything, and unless you're Derek Parfit, you should probably aim for modesty when saying your moral theory is best. And even Parfit's work can be questioned. Also, Ian McGilchrist will be good. Seems like a one trick pony. While I'm skeptical of a lot of 'brain region lights up when we do X, therefore your brain region X is sad' explanations, I don't think he even gets that far. Looking forward to it.

Blindboy’s reaction to the decoding: “F*** your stupid podcast, I’ve a horse outside.”

Jeanine Marie

I am so looking forward to the Ken Wilber episode! I remember AQAL! I sat next to his ex-girlfriend once at a Celebration of Life…. I read Grace and Grit in nearly one setting. Can’t wait! I am also looking forward to Teal Swan.

Subodh Kafle

I'm sure there is stuff to criticise with Michael, I often find issues when I listen to some of his podcast episodes. But he's really not a guru.

AM

Interested to hear about Iain McGilchrist, whose keeps popping up when I'm looking at other troublesome characters.

AM

One suggestion--have you ever read/listened to Paul Kingsnorth? A family member got deep into his recent book "Against the Machine" which swims around in the same intellectual waters as some of the weird American Catholic localists like Patrick Deneen (although Kingsnorth is newly Orthodox). This whole ideology it seems to me is ripe for engagement, although it does tend into our America-specific political preoccupations--it's very seductive for people who want to return to simpler times or have reasonable-sounding critiques of technology (Johnathan Haidt), but Kingsnorth premises his arguments on a LOT of assumptions and rhetoric rather than facts. And guess what, McGilchrist interviewed him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stQgDvMIqYw

CrystalJade

Yes, McGilchrist is one of these people who has a point about modes of attention, but then builds an entire world view of civilisation and history, which then retroactively justifies the theory. Very articulate but verbose. I actually enjoyed the first part of the master and his emissary, but then had to put it down. Very interested to hear the DTG take. Particularly if it means I don’t need to engage with the grand theory / sense making vibes.

Heidi Sævareid

Can't wait for Blindboy! But I'm nervous that the algorithm will once again start serving me Blindboy ads. For a while I had to see his bag face every time I opened Instagram, so it feels risky to even mention him online!
