Scott Galloway is the embodiment of Byung Chul Han’s ‘achievement-subject’

Martin 🇧🇻

If being right wing makes me right wing then I guess I'm right wing! Okay?! Are you happy now?!😂😂

Martin 🇧🇻

Ah, so Murderville is an American version of British show? I never knew! Murderville was actually pretty good

Linda Sears

I was worried about what to listen to while hacking through dead vegetation in the yard. Thanks!

Martin 🇧🇻

"Is Musk more of a man?". I'm pretty sure he is in his own mind!

Karen 🇨🇦🇺🇸

Really, the patreon price should go up to cover the cost of the therapy Chris will certainly need down the line from the vicarious trauma of listening to all this tripe.

Lucy

I would buy Eat the Gurus merch.

Leigha

The Epstien class includes most of the Trump administration

Martin 🇧🇻

What's all this talk of conspiracy theories? We don't deal in those! We deal in conspiracy hypotheses!

Leigha

Conspiracy theories are absolutely more prevalent on the right. They dont gain a foothold on the left

Stephen McGlinchey

I don't think it's correct to say all the evidence points to Epstein alone being a pedophile. All the available evidence perhaps. But victim testimonies make it clear there were many more, and just because the names of perpetrators have been redacted from the files doesn't make it appropriate to say there's no evidence.

Raysofmarie

Do you think Scott really said to his kid, “your output and value is 0?” Cause that’s wild.

Jake

A small nitpick on the claim that populism is currently all right wing in the west, in the UK we had Corbyn, and now we have Polanski.

Rich F

BTW The US Version of that comedy has an episode featuring Kumail Nanjiani and its one if the funniest things I've ever seen. UK version is good too.

Appreciate Matt’s observation that American left/right politics is not the same as left/right politics in Australia or Europe. So many times in internet comments I see somebody say something like, “what Americans think is left wing is centrist in Europe” as though it’s clever to notice that or that it’s some kind of dunk on Americans. There are many reasons to dunk on Americans (for example, most of them voted for a reality TV star who is systematically and violently dismantling their society and the global order) but the fact that they argue about different political issues than do Europeans isn’t one of them. The societies are different with different histories and cultures. Of course they divide and fight about different things. There is no objectively correct set of issues that two factions must argue about in national politics. It would be more surprising if left/right meant identical things in every place.

Also, just did LOTRs extended editions with my 11 yr old son over the holidays. Now we just ask ourselves 'what would Gandalf do?' when faced with life dilemmas. (He'd get some fireworks out, smoke a bit of the ol pipe weed whilst knowing that it's all about what you do with the time that is given to you!) Parenting done

Linda Sears

The highlight of this episode was hearing about Matt’s getting Kraftwerk’s Autobahn.

Kawaii Leonard

The Galloway manhood-surplus value theory is fucking vile

Chris Rincón

Max-lane Giz-lane is exactly the pronunciation she deserves 😂

Linda Sears

Plato definitely did not like the corrupting influence of theatre. There was a similar “moral panic” around theatre during the Roman era when moralists were concerned that actors, by mimicking other people, were making it acceptable to be deceptive. They were also viewed as like prostitutes. Later, during the reign of the Puritans in England, they shut down the theaters for turning attention away from God. The puritans were already threatening to do this during Shakespeare’s time, which is why the “bad guy,” who is made fun of in his comedy Twelfth Night, was a puritan.

Kawaii Leonard

Nitpick: the Epstein mob IS like the illuminati, in that they are oversensationalized and their power overstated. You will find similar trends when you go back and look at the 19th century German group that inspired that word

David Jones

Thank you for explaining “My Farmer Dad.” It showed up in my feed a while ago but I was too lazy to research it. BTW, I think the term you are looking for to describe this narrative technique is “edging.”

Haven’t commented for a while cos life. Always a joy, only thing I consistently look forward to online. Don’t feel bad about Patreon levels Chris. As Irish background /raised person from near Chris’ hometown who moved to Uk and who’s been to Oz and US but also most of Europe and with wife who speaks Japanese and visits Japan may be niche audience. Politically feel you can be somewhat avoidant of real controversy which is your call or maybe we just disagree. But… Scott Galloway is absolutely insufferable. Your decoding was distracted by Williamson and Matt’s sympathies. For a European this guy ( Scottish mother) is obnoxious. Affected laconic Californian drawl- tokenistic nods to being better- while getting plastic surgery that makes him look like skeletor and last episode with Kara Swisher- Jesus. If you don’t recognise this guy or give him any pass your radar has gone. Also at some point you really should question why so many of these people are US adjacent and why US culture does this to people. Fact both of you aren’t is an important USP seriously from self depreciating cultures. Some point needs to be discussed- or let’s hear about equally influential Finnish Gurus….

Swilly

Matt and Chris need to listen to the Volts podcast about Reactionary Centerism.

AJ

Which decoding Academia episode do you refer to at the end? I'd like to listen! 🙂

Nancy Hale

Matt allowing a turntable & records into his home will corrupt his youngest children in ways that electronic devices cannot. The path to negative value creation and goodness knows what else.

Anne Gallagher

Chris: why didn’t you report what Peter Attia actually said? The whole Epstein discussion was so relativist and disappointing. What do we make of the fact that so many men of real power just looked away?

Sarah V

I was worried that Matt and Chris hadn't fully appreciated how insidious Scott Galloway's thinking is during their decoding, so I'm very glad to hear them start unpicking his content a bit more here...

Ema

That arch mage thing... Ive seen similar 3 minute videos but aimed at women. And its always the downtrodden wife is a secret daughter of a billionaire.

Roland Weber

Thanks, that was fun as always! 😄 I'm one of those who didn't watch LotR Extended. A local movie theatre is/was showing them (3rd part later today), but I didn't want to commit 3 consecutive Sundays to it. Overdosed on the first part, watching it six times during the original theatrical run.

Matt, "it's cheaper than a 300 dollar jade egg and easier to get inside you" is the best bit of ad copy I've seen in many a year. Put that on a tshirt and i swear i'll buy like five

Russell

My Farmer Dad is wonderfully bizarre

Shambles

Please stop calling Epsteins victims "under age girls." My son is not an under age boy. He is a child. The same word applies to young females. They are children.

Bernt

Maxlane gizlane without pause or question 🤣🤣🤣 it's never not funny hearing chris just obliterate people's name

Bernt

I feel conflicted about the epstein email release. I agree that there's a lot of people who are deserving of the resulting reputational damage, but this release feels very haphazard and it seems like there's a ton implications and not a lot caution when it comes to accusation of heinous crimes. It just seems like this wrong way to go about this, but maybe this is the way it needed to happen. I am also worried that democrats are getting over their skis in leveling accusation because it's politically advantageous now, but it will come to bite them in the ass later. Either way, I guess the cats out of the bag and this is the way we have to do things.

Baruch Spinoza

On the ambiguity trick Matt brings up regarding Scott C, Daniel Dennett semi-popularized the term ”deepity” to denote this: ”A _deepity_ is a proposition that seems both important and true — and profound — but that achieves this effect by being ambiguous. On one reading it is manifestly false, but it would be earth-shaking if it were true; on the other reading it is true but trivial. The unwary listener picks up the glimmer of truth from the second reading, and the devastating importance from the first reading, and thinks, Wow!

Sam Hall

Just the faintest whiff of irony having the section on capitalist culture in the same episode you bumped up the subscriptions

i'm dissLexick

"Play doh" made me drop my weights from laughing. Also I took you as saying Chris Williams is basically the next Epstein... just wait

Erik Althoff

Feels like it’s not the first time I comment similar but.. capitalism isn’t “making a lot of money”, it’s a system. You can find extreme luxury lifestyles quite distasteful as I do but there’s no contradiction. I’m extremely left wing and don’t enjoy Hasan content for other reasons but it’s just a fact that anti capitalism has very little to do with streamers income or popstars for that matter. That’s a problem taxation can solve.

Jacqueline

I'm confused at the comments where you guys seem to say that the latest Epstein file release shows that (in general) he WASN'T trafficking minors to other wealthy and powerful men? Maybe I am misunderstanding you because Elon Musk for example clearly asked about coming to the "wildest party" on the island and Howard Lutnick also visited Epstein's island. The emails also reveal that he "introduced" Steve Tisch and Steve Jobs to "girls". There is also the very obvious case of Prince Andrew. Unless I am misunderstanding, you guys seemed to imply that wealthy dudes just wanted to hang out with Epstein himself? That is definitely not in line with any other analysis I have heard or what I would gather for myself.

Liam

I for one demand more Matt anecdotes

Steve Edge

Play doh.... Not Plato....😁😁😁
