We kick off cult season by dissecting a promotional interview where Allison Mack (NXIVM then-high-ranking-member) gushes over Keith Raniere, the “self-improvement” guru who managed to manifest a 120-year prison sentence for his abusive cult shenanigans. In the interview exchange, you can detect some of the features that allowed NXIVM to escalate from Executive Success courses to branding rituals, starvation regimes, and sexual coercion. Get ready to thrill at Raniere’s pseudo-profound style with liberal heapings of decorative academic references and philosophy name-drops, semantic fog style waffling, and therapy-judo questions. It's all rather similar to the usual guru rhetoric, but also quite a bit worse.

Mastering Inauthenticity and Coercion with NXIVM's Keith Raniere

I wonder if this slimy SOB has created a NXIVM sleeper cell in lockup?

I would argue the way he speaks is purposeful here. 1) embarrass you (the mark) into not asking challenging questions 2) reading to see if they are good marks for his con and 3) the secret language of cults

I loved this episode. I wonder for the guru series something on Erika Kirk and Candace Owens might be interesting people to cover?… I am looking forward to the Ken Wilber episode and would love to see a Mooji and also Tolle episode! Thanks for your great content!

PS Oprah would be fascinating to explore. I think that it has been underestimated how so many of her gurus have be platformed that have impacted American and the world so negatively. Platforming Chopra is the latest person she has platformed that has shown to be a sick deviant. Harpo Productions once contacted me about being a potential guest on Oprah for a book I wrote for children entering congregate care but I think I dodged a bullet by them not calling me again.

“use their scholarship decoratively” is a terrific insight. These gurus sprinkle in quotes and specialist vocabulary and notions to sound hifalutin smart. But without proper context or actual scholarship in the sources, it is flimsy tinsel. Decorative bullshit. And often quite depressingly effective.

Yay! Im really enjoying my 15 minutes! Great job on the pronunciation this time 😊 The Icelandic alphabet is not the easiest..

Allison seemed scared, fawning, needy. It was hard to watch. When she got teary and said she didn't know why, it did not look like relief to me. It looked like it could be the fragility of exhaustion, from chronic malnutrition and constant, extreme self-monitoring. Yes, Matt,KR is such a snake.

Argh i hate this current obsession w authenticity. Its used to excuse so many types of selfish and immature behaviour.

I'm a retired therapist and I am 10000% with Matt about the misuse of therapeutic language. All therapists know other therapists who abuse this discourse, to varying degrees, in social relationships, and it is definitely gross. It's a strong red flag for a therapist who has poor boundaries, and can signal also a problem in the inverse as well, where the therapist uses overly personal discourse with patients. There is conscious or unconscious manipulation at work in both. Glad you get the ick, Matt, and continue to point this out wherever you see it!

So hard to watch. What the hell does this guy have that made women glow? I do not see it, feel it, I just don’t get it. There are cult leaders I can imagine what it’s like to fall for. This guy just makes my skin crawl. I will say tho that I wonder if Chris gets it all the way right? ( sorry Chris ). I’ve listened a few times and I think that maybe KR is saying that not knowing you are not being authentic is worse than knowing. And while I get in principle what he’s on about , I too, like Matt, feel the cognitive load pull. Maybe it’s an age thing? Maybe it’s a CBF to try issue?

I want someone to look at me the way Allison Mack looks at Keith Raniere.
