In Part 2, Matt and Chris return to Blindboy, now broadcasting from a solar-powered podcast and therefore morally unimpeachable. The darkness, however, remains. Having established in Part 1 that the global elite are a vampiric class of depraved blackmailers who traffic children and delight in cruelty, in Part 2, Blindboy offers us some welcome relief in the form of answering the question of what it looks like to be one of the good ones. You may be surprised to learn that it involves a missing dressing room, muddy socks, and a loyalty to small-time promoters that borders on the heroic.

The episode also traces an ambitious historical arc: from street gangs in 1800s Limerick to the New York underworld, Meyer Lansky, Roy Cohn, CIA brothels and LSD interrogation programmes, and eventually to Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein. The connecting thread is a continuous tradition of sexual blackmail passed from master to apprentice that has, apparently, been quietly guiding Western (criminal) civilisation for the better part of two centuries. Matt and Chris sift through the historical material, examine the leaps required to keep the chain intact, and consider whether a conspiracy hypothesis that explains quite so much, quite so neatly, might deserve a small dose of skeptical hypothesis testing.

During the latter half of the journey, they take some time out to ponder what it all means, pet some snails, and discuss some familiar rhetorical techniques, including strategic disclaimers, moral grandstanding, and layered pre-emptive defences.

Finally, we arrive at our destination and learn that the real villain, when the mask is finally removed, is capitalism itself — a revelation that some listeners may have suspected from the very beginning.

Sure he was here in 2019 and sold out. I was at the Melbourne one that year 🧐

I enjoyed the episode, just want to say I think you're a little unfair to him about the changing outside in the mud story... I don't think that the way he described it contradicts himself or is hypocritical: .... He said it was not ideal changing outside but not a major upsetting thing, what upset him was that the only way to get a changing room is to be a dick. I can completely understand being upset that the people who act like assholes are getting the nicer thing, even if I don't care that much about getting the nicer thing myself.

I’m still listening to the first one. I will need to steel myself up for more. I wish I could just hear the piano without the voice over it.

A lone disagreer appears, ready to battle again. Good job on pulling a part the conspiracy stuff. Charity with the Hard facts, hard on the tenuous connections and framing.

It was interesting to listen to this episode as I am sporadically making my way through Destiny's analysis of his debate with KK. One of KK's objections to immigration is the high crime that (brown/Muslim) immigrants bring (debatable as to numbers of criminals vs hard-working folks). Blind Boy talked about Irish and Italian immigrants to the U.S. bringing crime and violence (Gangs of NY stuff). There's all sorts of immigrant communities that bring waves of crime, often when they are still new and shut out of "polite society" because they haven't integrated yet. These are "white" folks too (Russian & Ukranian mafia-types). I know I'm responding here to two different conversations, one DtG/Blind Boy and one Destiny/K Kisin, but it just made me think.

Chris, why don't you sound anything like this guy

Very Joe Rogan-esque A minor celebrity who has a very high opinion of themselves and confidence about various topics where if you fact check it’ll show they don’t actually have a depth of knowledge. Also, don’t take them seriously. They say don’t take them seriously about things right before they deliver their opinions as if they were the objective truth This blindboy guy isn’t as toxic as Rogan and doesn’t seem to platform other insane people, but it’s very much the same deal with different politics

So, I was collecting an order of mutton from a new butcher in my neighborhood. While waiting at the counter the "muddy socks" bit came on and that cracked me up to the point where I don't think I can ever go back. That was a laugh i desperately needed!

Chris, out of curiosity, are you familiar with the Panic World podcast? I'd be curious of your take on their Epstein coverage. The host employs what I think is an interesting "reverse strategic disclaimer"...starting off very hyperbolic (in a burned out/ironic affect) then winding back to a more reasonable conclusion.

Only 40 minutes into this one and I should really be posting this in the first episode’s comments, but it talks about the 4 chan link in more detail. Like Chris I do think the dirt is more in the influence and dirty money side of things but these links maybe shouldn’t be too easily dismissed Also interesting from the YouTube/streamer/gamer gate angle. I’m struggling with why Blindboy found the black mail aspect to be so significant to his elaborate story. There isn’t anything inherently neoliberal or capitalist about blackmail as it has been used in many different places, such as under the Soviets and the Stasi and black mailing someone who is abusing a child doesn’t make that abuse worse for the child. Is it because of his reading the book? I also think it was weird to make the claim that black mail would be a secretive art one learns from intelligence operatives and/criminal gangs. It seems like a standard tool that a manipulative person could figure out how to do. Anyway, I wasn’t following why that was a key part of his story. Maybe, he just wanted to make it more exciting because he could weave in historical figures.

Slap a wallaby on the butt? I don't think we should be encouraging nonconsensual contact with marsupials. Wave at a wallaby is more appropriate.

Stephen McGlinchey

On the Epstein blackmail topic, if Trump was schooled in the art of sexual blackmail by Roy Cohen, how is it that Epstein (or maybe Putin) is the one doing it, supposedly with Trump as the victim?

Molly Bretthauer

Listening to this reminds me of why I hated all the hippies in high school. I just can’t hang.

Recalcitrant Goat

That Russell brand clip at the end is very jarring 🤮 made walking alone into the embrace of the eternal dark seem quite appealing.

George

Couldn't wait to hear the response to the festival story when I listen to the source material. Didn't disappoint. Matt is right, very accidental Partridge

Lucy

Theory: Blind Boy is a lefty send-up of Alex Jones. It’s all the same valence of conspiracy. He just doesn’t yell.

George

Great pod as ever chaps. My takeaway from it is the old adage of never letting the truth get in the way of a good story. I listened to the whole of source episode and, with his accent and the way he meanders, there is something strangely hypnotic. In the same way you can get swept up in a good ghost story. More than likely absolute bollocks but a good yarn nonetheless.

Joe Euro

Can't help but side with Blindboy on the virgin media section. Thought he was pretty clear saying he wasn't annoyed with the two people talking, but was annoyed by virgin media snipping that bit to advertise the show. I don't think he ever made out that he wasn't bothered by any of it.

Kawaii Leonard

Is it just me or are Irish gurus 100x nicer than anyone from North America or the rest of Europe? This guy is ridiculous but at least he’s not a cynical rapist fascist

Paul Ditta

Great episode. Marred by only one thing. His voice. His voice! I once had a bit of a crush on my mates cousin, Clodagh. She was from Killybegs and she had the softest, lilting accent. And now I can’t think of it without hearing this dipshit spouting his nonsense. Thanks Chris. Thanks Matt. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your boxers for all eternity. Goddammit.

Frances goulart

Hi linda. Just touching base. Drop me a line to just chat, if interested!

Chomagerider

I think I understand now how my non dtg listening friends feel when I rant about any of the usual suspect gurus (Rogan, Weinstein JBP you name it). The reaction is usually some version of "what are you taking about. I don't know any of these people. Why do you give a shit." That's exactly how I feel about blindboy.

“Kay fay bee” Chris gonna put Matt outta a job

Aye aye 🙌

I feel that you might have been a bit harsh on blindboy over the autism thing he had reason to be annoyed and to give him the benefit of the doubt some people who get treated badly even if they don't care about themselves do care that it doesn't happen to others. As for the self aggrandizing it's pretty minor compared to say konstantine's oxford speech back patting session. However his conspiracy theories were totally wacko.

m

This really is just politics bobby fingers

Gavin Bewick

So does Blindboy ever mention the big, anti-capitalist elephant in the room and talk about Noam Chomsky being in the files?

Graham Clarke

I feel sad about these Blindboy episodes, unfortunately though it’s because you’re pretty much bang on. I really enjoyed his podcast when he talked about music or art history and told stories that intertwined various threads inconsequentially. However, more recently his “hot takes” have got less inconsequential and become more conspiratorial. I’ve still been listening but I can’t finish episodes anymore, I was pissed with his portrayal of the Epstein files for one of the reasons you mentioned, the spotlight is shone on conspiracy theories instead of highlighting the real suffering of young girls.

Matt Dear

As I said in the chat last week, for me. being someone who is a neurodivergent weirdo who constantly masks in 'normal' company, Blindboy does have a real appeal. I have a weird sense of humour, and I really like learning about biodiversity and folklore, so it seemed a good fit. This was off the back of watching a couple episodes of Blindboy Undestroys The World, which was pretty good. Sort of Adam Curtis with a plastic bag on his head. The issue I had though, was that because I do think they way he thinks, constantly linking things and free association, I would occasionally repeat factoids to friends in conversations. Then I'd fact check what I'd said after the fact, and find that it either wasn't true, or at least bending the truth. So, I kinda stopped listening so much, cause I don't like spending time on things that aren't true. Which is a shame really, cause I really like his writing, his anecdotes, and his storytelling. It's sad to see the conspiratorial thinking has taken a bit of an upswing recently, he was much more on the social criticism, and history of bigotry, side of things before.

kurdelis

Matt's solar panels are humming? Maybe we should be worried that somebody has sold some strange technology to the old man.

August Øyen

What bothers me about Blindboy’s takes is that they don’t even have the illusion of being smart. They just sound fucking stupid. When Bret or Eric does the same kind of thing, I’m still kind of dazzled by his command of the English language — he wraps the nonsense in such polished rhetoric that it almost feels profound for a moment. Blindboy just doesn’t have that layer. Maybe it’s something about the Irish accent that makes him come across a bit slow… though, to be fair, that might just be an Irish thing.

Lucyna

…as soon as these influencers take a person on a trip of logic leaps (whether they’re whispering or screaming) , one is getting primed to accept other lies as truths - and that’s never good. I actually think this whispering thing might be creating an even more effective conditioning or hypnotizing effect than Alex Jones’ screaming.

Shambles

This was fair. It really highlighted how much of his conspiratorial patter I've just ignored or let wash over me without question as I still value a fair bit of his output. His short stories are genuinely excellent and a lot of his critiques of cultural phenomena are genuinely funny and quite insightful or original.

Jackie Brown

I am still trying to get through part 1. the whispering voice and repetitive story telling are just so annoying. Will give it one more try tonight and then might bail.

Daniel VI

The Blindboy decoding is up there with your best work imo. Really enjoyed it. Great stuff lads!

Shay nolan

When's he going into the guromter?

Lads, Love your show. However, your take on Blindboy seems to be centered on a narrow example of his podcasts. Looking simply at the topics he covers from show to show, I see an incredible range of topics from interviews to reflections on literature and nature to childhood recollections. It seems your choice of podcast to explore is atypical. Am I wrong? Tim Scanlon Chicago -- USA
