Ken Wilber, the grand architect of Integral Theory, enters the Decoding chamber wearing a striking but unconvincing wig as we explore a worldview that confidently absorbs every religion, philosophy, and half-remembered psychology paper into one majestic, Borg-like synthesis. Resistance, as it turns out, is not just futile... it is probably “first-tier thinking".

This is a world of elaborate, baroque cosmologies. Layers within layers, quadrants within stages, each offering a map of reality that grows more intricate the closer it gets to its own centre. Traditions are not debated so much as absorbed, their distinctiveness gently dissolved into a higher synthesis that always seems to lead to the ultimate insight, which just happens to peak with integral theory.

Get ready to experience high-level political analysis where Kamala Harris becomes a “fractured green" and Donald Trump the embodiment of a "rational orange". You will also learn how Ken is working with AI companies, helping them to incorporate integral thinking into their algorithms. The implications this has for human evolution are hard to fathom.

Finally, in true Columbo fashion, we circle back to Matt's core philosophical system… panpsychism. Just a small detail and also take some time to conduct a brief spiritual inquisition into Matt’s alleged Christian upbringing. Fortunately, nothing is rejected. Everything is integrated.

In the end, Integral Theory offers a complete system that explains all perspectives, incorporates all critiques, and situates itself neatly at the highest stage of development.

I sure wish the Snorax was at the top of one of these hierarchies of being.

Okay, I think this guy is stuck in the put things into complicated categories stage.

Tbf Matt is Australian. They're trained to view the material world as a malignant bastard waiting to fry you to death, drown you, poison you, or eat you.

A few times he paused for so long I thought he’d fallen asleep.

You guys were struggling to describe the colour of his wig. Surely it’s beige? Given his elderly years, the colour will surely keep away disease.

patricia1558

I don't understand much of this but my takeaway is that you guys should add colours to the gurometer.

When I first listened and I heard the interviewer mention "yellow" as a stage, and Kenny called her out, I felt such sympathy for her. It's toe-curling. I would give anything to live in a better version of this world, one where she just goes, "Oh, hold on a second. This is all a load of bollocks, isn't it?"

Ken accusing Kamala Harris of speaking word salad is a perfect demonstration of him reaching a transcendent level of chutzpah.

Did he say Brahman or ramen? I’m up for a bowl of noodles spirituality!

Am I the only person who had literally no idea what this guy is talking about? Like, Gurus are usually pretty obtuse, but I can usually kind of follow along with what they think they’re saying. Listening to this guy has me doing checks to make sure I haven’t had a stroke.

Forgive me, it's been a while since I read Kuhn, but wasn't his theory that new paradigms emerge when old paradigms fail? And that the new paradigms "destroy" the old or replace them? Just seems like Mr. Wilber is leaving that part out as he reaches for Kuhn to explain how turquoise tier people can incorporate ALL the paradigms.

I first heard about Wilber and his system about 10 years ago. And in my very first contact with it (a conversation) I asked about the scientific evidence and immediately got told that that’s tier 1 thinking, and you need to be at tier 2 to understand the theories. I’m thinking that since the new age spirituality is very much about pickung whatever bits that feel right (a bit of buddhism, some tantra, and what about a litle cranio-sacral therapy as well? and so on),some more intellectual types may be lacking a coherent system. I think Wilbers framework does just that. It gives a sense of coherence and intellectual complexity that can encompass all spiritual stuff and also legitimize the mixing and matching, while simultaneously providing a science-sounding story about why spiritual people are actually better than others.

I spend quite a lot of time encouraging people to find the quality (of the mind or whatever) that observes or witnesses without the need to judge the experience. It is a basic CBT skill - although does take a while to convince people it is useful. Now, if you add stages, religions, colours, smells, bells it is so much more attractive! Especially if it costs loads of money. People really value stuff they pay for.

I think the framework of the "folk philosopher" or "folk scientist" is really a useful one!

Israeli rabbis… pedophilia…. as a North American who supports the war on Iran, this guru has everything I’m looking for

I can understand the utility of coming up with a baroque system like his as it is likely that your followers want to figure it all out so that they can better ascend or transcend. The more complicated it is, the more you can keep pushing them and/or correct them if they go astray.

Matt, if you want more bespoke cosmologies, you guys should cover Terence McKenna

Woohoo! One of my clients is a Wilber acolyte spouting opinions about colours on the regular. Haven’t started listening yet, but my ears are cracking their knuckles in anticipation

This guy sounds exactly like one particular flatmate in 2018. He had a cultic personality and I still describe living with him as a cult-like experience - I only left because my then-partner forced us to find a new flat after I started to "talk funny". He was charismatic, used unnecessarily complex ideas, flattery and asked for investments of time and money into his social experiments. If he wasn't so lazy, he'd have started a powerful cult by now! I found Conspirituality in 2020/2021 and DTG shortly after, both helped build my guard against these kinds of people. But it's weird how Ken Wilber takes me straight back to that place in 2018. He could have enticed a younger version of me, looking for meaning from the mundane. He doesn't score highly on the Gurometer for me, but a great case study in pseudo-intellectual cult leadership. Very similar to Carol Sanford (who once consulted for DuPont, did you know?).

Nancy Hale

I admit for a time I was interested in Ennegram. 9 personality types arranged in a spatial system. Simple on the surface but if you really wanted to get advanced there is a system of subtypes. But it had the disclaimer that “everyone had a little bit of all the types in their personality.” Anyway it speaks to a certain human desire for systematizing aspects of experience that are ephemeral. My grandfather was a Freemason. Three tiers and a total of thirty two (THIRTY TWO!) total levels of esoteric knowledge.

Andrew Przybylski

I'm 3/4 of the way through and Wilber is the first you've covered who I'm struggling to understand the basics of their epistemology/cosmology. Is it disorganised thinking or is there something more remedial I'm missing. I feel like I need to check the co2 levels in our house.

Martin 🇧🇻

Goddamn! I always wonder how much of their own bullshit these guys actually believe.

Martin 🇧🇻

You know who really doesn't like the talk about different types of intelligences (intelligy?)? People with high IQ. Many of them are very adament that IQ is all that matters. Wonder why.

Martin 🇧🇻

As someone who is frequently described as "mid at best", i really feel for turquoise!

This was a fun listen. I read my fair share of Wilber books in college. #blunderyears

The Sam Harris/Jordan Peterson mashup I neither wanted nor needed.

This guy must be the most boring guru yet. His voice is soporific. How can anyone achieve enlightenment without falling asleep?

Matt Dear

This is up there with the all-in podcast, just incredibly dull waffling. He's at least less repulsive? So far anyway, I'll try and see this one through to the end this time...

Beel

He talks about his color tiers like Magic The Gathering decks.

For me, you're Pokémon would be Farfetch'd, @ Chris. See main chat for pick and bio.

He hasn't discoved the tippiest-toppiest Peter Teal Swan Spirograph Level in the 37th Chamber of Shaolin. Trump is orange!

The completely unwarranted confidence is what gets me.

Melinda

My. god. (In Chris voice and accent) this one is hard work. I feel like I'm in one of those "Dearest Penelope it has been eleventy seven days and there's no end in sight" memes.

Leigh

Matt you say baroque too often. But at least you're not bagging Melbourne.

Eli Osterberg

It reminds me of Faust looking at his diagrams of the microcosm and the macrocosm.
