Long requested, we are turning our decoding lens to Oxford philosopher/conservative curmudgeon Iain McGilchrist.

Best known for his 2009 book 'The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World', he also recently became the chancellor of Ralston College, one of those American anti-woke colleges.

His thesis builds from his interpretation of lateralisation in brain functions and the differences between the hemispheres into a rather familiar and dramatic set of claims about cultures, religion, and metaphysics.

This one did not spark joy...

Chris u were at Oxford right? Post-grad? Ever lock horns with McG? I feel like I half remember u talking about him ages ago. Apols if this is a question that has been repeatedly asked already.

Excited for this one!

Frances goulart

I still have that book on a shelf with a bookmark at about page 73. There it shall remain.

RareTripleBait

Love it. I want more people I have never heard of before 💕 I developed an allergy towards Sam Harris due to the constant exposure

Thank you, thank you! my conspiracy nut ex uses McG talking points in his rants but gets the left/right the wrong way round all the time (left brain = lefty emotional thinking)

I am about 30% of the way through this book. It’s intriguing but quite long and I’m not in a place to assess its veracity. His comments with Alex O’Connor were quite nebulous and sometimes contradictory. I am still left not really understanding what his point is.

Ben Warner

His remark about no longer being interested in certainty is a strange one

2 monos don't make a stereo. 💤💤💤💤

7min. How far will I get? Anyway, 1st impression is he's got a solid central observation: Different people seem to have different understandings of the world and reactions to it. Hes got some sketchy foundational explanations for why that *is* - and some very debatable extrapolations following on from it. Also he's kind of a drag, man.

Rich F

He knows some stuff obvs. Loads more than me! Going into details now. Geckos and such.

Rich F

Hes talking about a lot of different things ppl do and he's linking it v confidently to his understanding of left/right brainy things. Did I miss where he cited evidence? No really, I was distracted.

Rich F

He'd like a bigger chunk of JBPs audience clout methinks. Strong parallels. Are they pals?

Leigh

I didn't realise he'd gone anti woke. What's sparked the small dick energy in his case does anyone know?

DJM

Super-excited for this one. Matt, I’m a psychologist too. I’m *shudder* a clinician! When I was in school, I was sort of taught that “right brain/left brain” differences were nonsense/overblown. I went on to learn that there are some meaningful differences in hemispheric patterns and integration, and this left me feeling confused. What does contemporary psych say about hemispheric lateralization of things like affect, creativity, logic, etc?

Jamie Foy

The man is working with a very narrow definition of computation

Empty_Cognizance

Goddamnit… now I gotta watch this *and* the f'ng 2-hour debate he had with Anil Seth recently that was the first suggested video on my sidebar… thanks Chris

Ema

Ugh. This is like being unpleasantly stoned while annoying housemates talk at me.

McGilchrist is more than happy to cite empirical “reductive” research when it suits his purposes. But when he runs off into his speculative flights of fancy that are “right brained” he has no use for trying to measure phenomena experimentally. I’m struggling to see where he is squaring this discrepancy. But typical guru maneuvers.

Looking forward to this one. I made a comment on decoding academia about Michael Levin the biologist probably needing a decoding soon. Didn’t realize until now Mike was a speaker at McGilchrist’s CIIS conference last year :/

Paul Bowman

Left brain/right brain discourse? Still? In 2026? And by an "anti-woke philosopher" no less. Uurgh. What's worse is I have a horrible feeling I can pretty much predict everything he's going to say before I even listen to the episode. Oh, for a spark of originality... (some hope)

Frances goulart

Anybody remember THE WRONG BOX ( 1966) and Ralph Richardson's performance as the monologueing elder brother who drones on and on about philosophy, poetry and wisdom of the ancients oblivious to the other brother's attempts to knock him off in various ways! Gilchrist could have played that part!

Kitchen Garage

As smart as the young fella is, I have to admit that I really dislike Alex's affect. Even when he's making good points, it grates on me. Also, I was once a Philosophy major, and I think he understands Chalmers poorly. But hey: I can't handle a live conversation that's being broadcast.

Frederick the Great Pessimist

Bringing in the famous scientist Goethe into your argument about evolution is always a good sign.

Dank Sparrow

I didn't like him at normal speed but at 2.5x he became so so, sort of a literate crank, strange for sure but on the scale curve of gurus convered one of the less objectionable gurus. Tho this is the only content I've seen so far.

DJM

I’m quite sure I will not read his book. I also am so curious about how the decoding will go. I’m kind of swayed by some of his points. It is telling that one of the biggest split brain researchers, Gazzaniga, doesn’t actually agree with McGs theories. Maybe he is to hemispheric lateralization what Gabor Mate is to trauma or psychiatry or epigenetics?

DJM

Maybe we’d be better off as a species if we had eyes on the sides of our heads. Can any surgeons do this?

Anjan Sarkar

I've been waiting for a long time for the fella. Loved every minute of it ! I hope part 2 will have some excerpts from his discussions with Dr Peterson and that ilk, the Sensemakers and dear old Sam.

Justine

What a load of absolute tosh. You can’t measure love? I don’t have any sort of physiological response to seeing or thinking someone I love, versus a stranger? Is that not patently ridiculous? O_O At the risk of sounding very unkind, he sounds past his best. The overall impression I got is of a once brilliant(?) academic, who Is out of touch with current knowledge (his stuff about machines made me wince) and whose biases and emotions are leaking through into his arguments in a way that we would actually mock in a younger man (did you know he likes nature?) One thing landed with me, though. “God is neither odd nor even” was a nice point. They persuaded me that JBP is right to squirm when people ask if Jesus rose from the dead or not. I wish I hadn’t had to sit through all those just-so stories about animals with their eyes being taped, though, to get that one decent point. In his defence, the content would play better as a book, and I did lap up Guns, Germs and Steel back in the day: so maybe I don’t always demand high standards of evidence to support a Grand Theory… I just found him a bit annoying? (Or worse: maybe I just found Alex O’Connor so slimy it coloured my reaction to the whole thing)
